But it isn't in the same conversation as the truly great episodes Halloween, Lie To Me, Innocence, Passion, I Only Have Eyes For You, Becoming etc etc. I wouldn't even put it with the 'good' ones like School Hard, The Dark Age and What's My Line.

2022-06-16 23:08:04 +0000 UTCoutside of him dating ampata i didnt take this as a xander ep. to me its pretty evenly split. i can get the complaint of wanting more but its an hour long show with ampata as the monster of the week instead of repeating. i would have loved a 3 ep arc so we can get to know her more (love the actress and the character and wanted to learn much more about her culture) and yes that is jacob's dad from twilight. for me the good/pros out weigh the bad and any bad is just the tropes we have to deal with when it comes to network tv and buffy in particular. touch upon elements of the human experience that will carry over the entire season (buffy wanting a normal life and being a slayer weighing on hence her making her decision in the season finale) but not wrap it all up in this ep. the guest star being the monster of the week only gets a little development and then die! like the ep with the puppet. there is so much more to learn of his life since becoming a puppet decades ago and we will never learn it. it is what it is

MAKES NO SENSE. they do the same thing with "he's ugly so what he is doing is creepy" "he's hot so what he is doing isnt creepy" plenty of examples of that in season one of this show. there is also the success of you and the obsession of those who are attracted to men (except me) who "love bad boys". ill stick to my goody 2 shoes boy scouts ala superman with genius IQs

Not one of my favorites, but I do like the parallels between Ampata and Buffy, and how she's not really a bad person to begin with. She just didn't get a chance to live her life, which is something Buffy is always yearning to do.

2022-06-16 22:08:21 +0000 UTCWhile the premise is intriguing and I like some of the parallels they make between Ampata and Buffy (being 16yo girls with an unescapable fate) it all feels a bit undercooked for me. It ends up being mostly a Xander episode and I don't feel like we really learn anything new or get much from his character that we haven't seen before. Xander is horny and falls in love with a pretty girl. In the end he shows courage. I wanted more then that. If anything, Willow is the one who gets more out of this episode taking her first step towards moving away from Xander. I'm also really not fond of the sexy foreign exchange student trope that was in every early 2000s teen comedy. I also find that all the parts that are suppose to be suspensful or scary don't manage either. The bodyguard attacking Buffy and Giles coming out of nowhere just looked a bit dumb. I do like that actor though (I think he's Jacob's father in Twilight). It also annoyed me every time they were entering that museum with no security at all and that people could just touch all these super ancient artifacts without gloves. I know it's typical Buffy siliness but it really bothered me here. Anyway, even a bad Buffy episode is still fun. I just find it lacking compared to other monster-of-the-week episodes.
