Ya, I disagree too. For those new to Buffy, never listen to anyone saying to skip episodes. Many times there is universe building, lore building, or character development that takes place in what some consider minor episodes.

Well, this is the episode where Buffy as a show comes into its own. We get a glimpse of the awesomeness to come. Yes it's a campy and comedic show, but it can turn on a dime and suddenly become deathly serious and pull out some massive acting chops. Nobody is quite ready to believe that the show will actually kill the main character in the first season, but they do and it gives us an idea that this show will come out swinging. Also, her death also highlights Buffy's true superpower. Not anything the slayer bestows on her, but her relationships. No matter what, as the prophecy foretold, Buffy was going to die. It was her relationships with others around her that saved her. For all those bashing Xander above in the comments, keep in mind that Xander was the one that didn't give up on her. He made his play, she shot him down. He sucked it up and when she was heading to her death, he dove in the Master's caverns to help her out despite not knowing what would be there when he arrived. He also, by saving Buffy, really saved the world. They can bad mouth him all they want, but he still did a lot and was key to how things turned out. Basically, yes, Xander is a hot mess. He even admits that himself. Still, when it comes to crunch time, he's there to put his life on the line to do his part. Anyways, as the show goes on, this superpower of Buffy's will become a theme of the show, as it has already been through season 1. I'm really glad you liked the episode and can't wait to see how you react to all the fun coming in season 2.

Honestly, the real problem with Xander is how he is written. One fo the truly great things about this show is actions have consequences, and consequences have an impact on the characters. Unlike many shows where they could be tortured to the breaking point one episode and be fine in the next, this show really explores character growth. A big part of that is providing motivations for why characters act the way they do. Currently there are very slight hints made during very brief comments on Xander's background. They really dropped the ball there. Yes, Xander is a flawed character. Still, there are reasons why he is so flawed, but the show really hasn't bothered to show us those reasons much up to this point. Also, beyond that, as someone who went through high school in the 90s, I can say that many teen boys at the time were much worse than Xander. There were a lot of cliques and a lot of bullying. A guy in school even being hinted as being guy could have half to the school bullying you endlessly. They guys would favor sometimes fairly extreme levels of misogyny. Hell at the time, anyone who knew how to use. a computer was just a nerd or a geek which could make you a social outcast.

No kidding. Holy crow. Seems almost spoilery. Plus, many many fans really enjoy 4, 6, and 7 a lot. Every season easily has episodes that are off the scale. Myself, I don't care to have favorites because they aren't formulaic and all the same. With so many personalities on the couch, I'm sure each will find their own seasons that resonate with them personally more than others. That's one of the joys of Buffy. It has such a wide variety of things for everyone to enjoy.

not sorry but i couldnt control myself and just went on a buffy weekend trip. reading all the wikis and marathoning season 2 (about to get to 3 in an hour). i did skip eps 1 and 2 though as those who know the show know the season really doesnt kick off til ep 3, so it will still be a bit of a blind rewatch since i havent seen season 2 (before this weekend) since it was first put on dvd. so see yall thursday with some reinvigorated buffy hype!

I think its pretty awesome when used sparingly and in a way thats self aware. Season 1 is a camp mess, but occasionally that also meant it tried fun stuff that was never used again.

I feel like there are whole essays we could write about how Xander holds a mirror up to Whedon and his whole self-loathing-but-self-pitying 'I can't help myself' thing. Thankfully other writers intervene and Xander eventually becomes a tolerable character. But in the meantime...oh boy.

Elizabeth, I think her knowledge of the prophecy was inhibiting her mentally. She was told she was foretold she would die. Once she had died and came back, that was no longer a certainty, she was free to make her own destiny.

Can we please stop overhyping the second season? Yes, it's good but the first half has some truly terrible episodes including one late in the season. Also, telling them it's easily the best implies that if some of them don't like the best episodes of season 2 then everything else in the show has to offer must be slightly inferior. I think that sends the wrong message.

Unstablebeast, I think part of the reason why Xander exists as a character is to expose some of those toxic traits that was considered "boys will be boys" back then. As you pointed out it never really works and in many cases there's consequences to his actions; consequences that may not have happened to teenage guys during that time. As much of a shitbag as I think Joss Whedon is he was pretty good at exposing this kind of toxic stuff that got pushed under the rug so many times in 90's TV.

In this show, yes but in most mythology vampires are at least weak to silver. Mirrors used to be made from silver and it's the reason why vampires can't see their own reflection.

Season 2 is probably my favourite season and is in most people's top 3 seasons of the series. It's uneven overall though, with high highs, and low lows. But the highs of season 2 are some of the most definitive parts of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer (Rana is going to absolutely LOSE HER SHIT at least three times in the back half of this coming season). Seasons 3 and 5 (the seasons that round out most people's top 3) are steadier, but not necessarily better.

How many times do we need to teach you this lesson old man? Making a vampire requires a vampire to drain the victim to the point of death and then make them drink the vampires blood. Marinate for a few days and then that person will rise as a vampire. Silver is for werewolves period.

In the Buffy universe, a vampire has to suck your blood until you are near death then you have to suck their blood before you die, then you die and come back as a vampire.
