The walls from outermost to innermost are as follows: Maria, Rose, Sina. You are correct! Not only was the attack on Shiganshina five years ago (Eren notes this just before the Colossal Titan appears again), but the forest was a tourist destination between walls Rose and Maria.

The episode in which they introduced Annie as a good fighter, they also showed her thinking on a higher level about what's happening. Just rewatch sparring scene from episode 4. She's giving off vibe not only of a fighter, but also of a deep and cynical thinker.

Something that I found hard to keep in mind was that they're still only in that space between walls Maria and....... Rose (I think)?

Just off the top of my head i can think of a handful of other season 1 characters smarter than her. She's only been shown to be a good fighter. I'm glad Suraj at least semi corrected her on that, because her head canon was going all over the place in that portion of the discussion.
