Chapter 92

The Wedding at Caisteal Dorcha - Part Two

"We've prepared a small reception in the south gallery, " Regulus explained as they moved out of the chapel. "Nothing elaborate, but there's food, wine, and space to breathe."

The small party moved to an adjoining chamber where a modest feast had been prepared. Champagne flowed, music played from an enchanted gramophone, and for a few precious hours, the darkness they had all survived seemed very far away.

Severus kept Lily close throughout, his hand rarely leaving hers. They maintained a constant conversation beneath the regular festivities, private jokes, shared observations, and moments of wordless emotion that needed no translation.

"I still can't believe this is real, " he murmured quietly as they accepted congratulations from Frank and Alice.

"Believe it, " she replied, squeezing his hand. "I'm not going anywhere."

As the celebration continued, McGonagall approached them with two crystal glasses of elvish wine.

"A toast, " she said, handing them each a glass, "to new beginnings."

"To new beginnings, " they echoed, touching their glasses to hers.

McGonagall studied them both for a moment, her expression thoughtful. "You know, I've overseen many student romances in my time at Hogwarts. Most flame out before they truly begin. But you two..."

She shook her head slightly, a small smile playing at her lips. "I confess I didn't see this outcome when you were students. But watching you now, it seems impossible it could have ended any other way."

"Best not to complicate things with impossible explanations, " Severus said carefully.

"Minerva, please, " she corrected gently. "I think we're well past formalities at this point, don't you?"

Before either could respond, Sirius clinked a spoon against his glass, calling for attention.

"Attention, everyone! As the self-appointed master of ceremony, " this earned a snort from Regulus, which Sirius pointedly ignored ", I believe it's time for a toast."

He raised his glass toward Lily and Severus, his usual mischief temporarily replaced by genuine warmth.

"To Lily and Severus, " he began. "If anyone had told me at Hogwarts that I'd be standing here today, celebrating your wedding and actually meaning it when I wish you happiness... well, I'd have had them committed to St. Mungo's."

Laughter rippled through the gathering, and even Severus's lips quirked upward.

"But here we are, " Sirius continued, his voice growing more serious. "We've fought together, nearly died together, and somehow along the way, became a family. A strange, complicated, occasionally dysfunctional family, but a family nonetheless."

He looked directly at Severus, something like respect in his eyes. "You saved us all more times than I can count. You saved my brother when I couldn't. And now, watching you with Lily... I get it. I finally get it."

His expression softened as he turned to Lily. "Make her happy, Snape. After everything she's been through, everything all of us have been through, she deserves that much."

"On that, Black, we are in complete agreement, " Severus replied quietly.

Sirius raised his glass higher. "So here's to you both. May your partnership be as formidable in peace as it was in war. May you never stop challenging each other. And may you find all the happiness that neither of you thought you deserved."

"To Lily and Severus!" echoed around the room as glasses were raised.

Remus produced a bottle of aged firewhisky, pouring small measures for everyone. "To Lily and Severus, " he toasted, raising his glass. "Who proved that some bonds are stronger than time itself."

"To love and courage, " Mary added, her eyes suspiciously bright.

"That was almost tolerable, " Severus said quietly to Lily, though his tone held more warmth than his words suggested.

"High praise indeed, " she replied, leaning against him slightly.

As the afternoon progressed, Lily noticed Severus growing quieter, more thoughtful. She could sense something building in him, not anxiety, exactly, but anticipation.

"What are you planning?" she asked while outwardly chatting with Mary.

"You'll see, " he replied with rare playfulness. "Patience."

The sun was beginning to lower in the sky when Severus finally approached her, taking her hand.

"If you'll all excuse us, " he said to the gathering, "I have something to show my wife."

The word 'wife' sent a thrill through Lily that seemed to echo back to him. His expression softened momentarily before he led her from the room, through winding corridors and up a spiral staircase she hadn't explored before.

"Where are we going?" she asked, curious.

"Somewhere special, " was all he would say.

They emerged onto a small, secluded balcony at the highest point of the eastern tower. From here, they could see for miles, the rugged coastline, the sea stretching to the horizon, and the wild beauty of the island spread before them.

But what took Lily's breath away was what Severus had created in this hidden space. A small garden bloomed impossibly on the stone balcony, lilies and herbs, moonflowers that would open at dusk, and a single willow sapling in the center.

"Severus, " she breathed, taking in the unlikely oasis. "How did you...?"

"Advanced herbology, mostly, " he replied, his tone casual though she could sense his nervous anticipation. "And some creative adaptation of growth charms."

She moved further into the garden, brushing her fingers against the plants. "But why here? And the willow..."

"For us, " he said simply, coming to stand beside her. "A reminder of where we began. And where we're going."

She turned to him, overwhelmed by the gesture. "When did you even have time to do this?"

"I've been working on it for weeks, " he admitted. "A little each day. I wanted..." He hesitated, then continued with careful precision. "I wanted to create something living. Something that could grow with us."

Lily felt tears rising again, but these were different from those she'd shed during the ceremony. These came from a deeper place, a recognition of what this garden represented for a man who had known so much death, so much destruction.

"It's perfect, " she said, reaching for his hand. "Absolutely perfect."

She felt his relief and pleasure at her reaction. "There's more, " he said, leading her to a small bench nestled among the plants.

They sat together, and Severus withdrew a slender box from his robes.

"One more thing, " he said aloud, offering it to her. "A wedding gift."

Lily opened the box to find a delicate silver necklace with a pendant in the shape of a lily. But this was no ordinary piece of jewelry, the petals seemed to glow from within, and as she lifted it, she could feel magic humming through the metal.

"It's beautiful, " she said, examining it more closely. "But there's something more to it, isn't there?"

Severus nodded, taking the necklace from her hands and moving to fasten it around her neck. "It's connected to our bond, " he explained as the clasp clicked into place. "A permanent connection between us. Not as overwhelming as some bonds can be, but..."

"Enough to always know you're there, " she finished, understanding immediately. She could feel the meaning behind the gift, his lingering fear of losing her again, his desire to always be connected, to never be completely separated no matter what came.

"Yes, " he said simply.

Lily touched the pendant where it rested against her skin, feeling it warm slightly. "It's perfect, " she said again, turning to face him fully. "And so is this day. So are you."

"Hardly perfect, " he replied with a ghost of his old self-deprecation.

"Perfect for me, " she insisted, leaning forward to kiss him.

The sun began its final descent toward the horizon, casting long golden rays across the secret garden. The first moonflower opened, releasing its sweet scent into the evening air.

Neither noticed these details immediately, too absorbed in each other and the miracle of their shared future, a future that, against all odds and across the boundaries of time itself, they had fought for and won together.

As the golden light began to fade from the private garden, Severus and Lily returned to the celebration below, where floating lanterns now illuminated the courtyard. The stone walls of their fortress home, once cold and forbidding, glowed with warm amber light, transforming the ancient keep into something magical and inviting.

"There they are!" Mary called out, raising her glass as the newlyweds descended the stairs. "We thought you might have eloped from your own reception."

Lily laughed, her fingers intertwined with Severus's. "Just taking a moment, " she said, touching the silver lily pendant at her throat.

Regulus approached with two fresh glasses of champagne. "Everything to your satisfaction?" he asked Severus with a knowing look.

"Perfect, " Severus replied, and only those who knew him best could detect the unusual softness in his voice.

The courtyard had been transformed while they were gone. Enchanted lanterns floated above the gathering, their light shifting between gold, silver, and the faintest hint of green, a subtle nod to their Slytherin allies. Tables laden with food and drink lined the perimeter, while the center had been cleared for dancing. Flowering vines climbed the ancient stones, blooming despite the season, their scent mingling with the salt air from the nearby sea.

"McGonagall's work, " Remus explained, noticing Lily's appreciative gaze. "She said something about making proper use of Transfiguration for once."

The professor in question stood nearby, engaged in conversation with Frank and Alice. She caught Lily's eye and raised her glass in acknowledgment, a rare smile softening her features.

Sirius appeared at Severus's elbow, startling him slightly. "Time for the first dance, " he announced. "Unless you'd prefer to skip the tradition?"

"We'll dance, " Lily answered before Severus could respond. She felt his momentary hesitation, not reluctance, but a flicker of self-consciousness. "Just follow me, " she said quietly. "No one will be watching your feet."

"They'll be watching me hold you, " came his response, tinged with possessive pleasure rather than concern.

The small gathering parted as Severus led Lily to the center of the courtyard. With a flick of her wand, Mary started the music, a gentle melody that seemed to rise and fall like the waves against the cliffs below.

"I never imagined this, " Lily admitted quietly as Severus's hand settled at her waist. "Not just marrying you, but... all of this. Having our friends here, being safe, being happy."

"Neither did I, " he confessed, guiding her into a simple turn. "I never dared hope for any of it."

The music carried them across the stones, their movements falling into natural synchrony. It wasn't a polished dance from years of practice, but something more intimate, a physical manifestation of their connection.

"Finally it's over, " Lily whispered, resting her forehead against his. "Everything we fought for."

Severus pulled her closer, his usual reserve softened by the day's emotion. "Not everything, " he replied. "Some battles still remain."

She smiled against his shoulder, knowing he referred to their ongoing work, the potions research they would begin at St. Mungo's, the protection networks they continued to maintain, the slow rebuilding of a world nearly shattered by war.

"Then we'll face those together too, " she said, certainty in every syllable.

Around them, their friends watched with expressions ranging from undisguised joy to wistful contemplation. Remus's eyes gleamed with unshed tears as he observed the couple who had saved him from Greyback's vengeance. Sirius stood with his arm slung casually around his brother's shoulders, his usual mask of careless amusement set aside for genuine happiness.

As the music reached its crescendo, Severus executed a careful turn that made Lily's dress flare slightly. The movement drew appreciative murmurs from those watching, and Lily felt a flicker of smug satisfaction from her husband.

"Show-off, " she thought affectionately.

"Only for you, " came his immediate reply, accompanied by warmth that was far more open than the careful expressions he allowed the rest of the world to see.

The music began to soften, drawing toward its conclusion. Without any signal the others could perceive, their friends began to move forward, forming a circle around the dancing couple. As the final notes played, Severus and Lily found themselves at the center of a protective ring of their chosen family.

"To Lily and Severus, " Mary said, raising her glass once more.

"To forging our own path, " said Regulus.

"To choosing family, " Alice added.

One by one, they offered their blessings, their circle tightening until they all stood shoulder to shoulder, glasses raised in the lantern light. The moment held a weight beyond words, these people who had fought together, protected each other, and emerged from darkness to build something new.

"To family, " Lily said finally, raising her own glass to include everyone present. "The one we chose."

"The one we earned, " Severus amended quietly, his free arm still around her waist.

As their glasses clinked together in the gentle light, the floating lanterns began to rise higher, their glow intensifying. The music shifted to something more lively, and the circle broke apart as others joined the dance. Frank swept Alice into an enthusiastic twirl, while Sirius attempted to convince a laughing Mary to try a complicated step he claimed to have learned in Budapest.

Through it all, Severus kept Lily close, his dark eyes rarely leaving her face. For so many years, across two lifetimes, he had watched her from a distance, believing happiness was for others. Now, surrounded by unlikely allies who had become friends, with Lily's hand in his and their bond humming between them, he allowed himself to embrace what he had fought so hard to create.

"Always, " he murmured against her hair as they swayed to the music, the word both promise and declaration.

"Always, " she agreed, the silver lily at her throat glowing softly in the lantern light.

As the celebration continued into the evening, the lanterns burned brighter against the deepening twilight. Couples spun across the makeshift dance floor, their shadows stretching and retreating across ancient stone. Laughter punctuated the music, sometimes rising above it when Sirius demonstrated his increasingly outlandish dance moves.

Through it all, Severus and Lily moved between their guests, accepting congratulations, sharing quiet moments, never straying far from each other's side. The silver lily pendant at Lily's throat caught the lantern light, occasionally flaring with an inner glow that had nothing to do with reflected illumination.

McGonagall watched it all from her position near one of the stone archways, her posture still Hogwarts-proper despite the informal setting. A small, satisfied smile played at the corners of her mouth as she observed the unlikely gathering, Gryffindors and Slytherins, former rivals and enemies, now united in celebration.

Severus noticed her checking the delicate silver watch pinned to her robes and steered Lily in the professor's direction.

"I'm afraid I must take my leave, " McGonagall said as they approached. "Even on summer holiday, Hogwarts requires attention. The house-elves have reported some concerning activity near the Forbidden Forest."

"Nothing dangerous, I hope?" Lily asked, concerned.

"Likely just centaurs expressing their usual territorial displeasure, " McGonagall replied. "But Dumbledore believes in addressing such matters promptly, and I find myself in agreement."

"Some things never change, " Severus remarked dryly.

"Indeed, Mr. Snape, or should I say, Professor Snape, given your new research position." McGonagall's eyes held a gleam of approval. "St. Mungo's is fortunate to have secured both your services. I expect to see revolutionary healing potions developed under your joint research."

"We're starting with improvements to the Wolfsbane Potion, " Lily said. "Remus has agreed to help with the testing phase."

"A worthy endeavor." McGonagall nodded, her expression softening further. "And perhaps someday, when you're ready, Hogwarts might benefit from occasional guest lectures? The current Potions master is adequate, but lacks your... particular insight."

Severus raised an eyebrow. "Is that a job offer, Minerva?"

"Merely planting a seed for future consideration." She adjusted her cloak, preparing to depart. "Your talents have always been wasted on just one audience."

Lily smiled, touched by the subtle vote of confidence. "We'll consider it. Though I think we need some time to focus on our research first."

"And perhaps on each other, " McGonagall added with unexpected gentleness. "After everything you've both endured, a period of peace is well-deserved."

The music shifted to a slower melody, and nearby, Mary pulled Remus onto the dance floor despite his token protests. Sirius had somehow convinced Alice to attempt a complicated spin that had Frank watching with a mixture of amusement and concern.

"They've all grown so much, " McGonagall observed quietly. "Watching your generation face such darkness... it wasn't what any of us hoped for you. But seeing what you've become through that crucible, " She paused, her composure momentarily cracking to reveal deeper emotion. "I am extraordinarily proud of you all."

Lily felt her throat tighten at the unexpected praise. "We couldn't have done it without you."

"I merely provided guidance when needed. You found your own path." McGonagall straightened, recovering her usual brisk demeanor. "And now, I really must return before Dumbledore sends a search party."

She shook Severus's hand formally, then surprised Lily with a brief, tight embrace. "Congratulations to you both. Your partnership has already proven formidable, I suspect it will only grow stronger with time."

Severus and Lily walked with her toward the gate where she could Apparate beyond the protective wards of their fortress home. The evening air carried the scent of salt from the sea below, mixed with the fragrance of the enchanted flowers McGonagall herself had conjured for the celebration.

At the wrought-iron gate, McGonagall paused and turned back to face them. In the twilight, her severe features softened, and for a moment, Lily could see beyond the strict professor to the woman who had fought alongside them, who had believed in them even when others hesitated.

"Take care of each other, " she said simply.

Then, with a graceful turn, she Disapparated with a soft crack, leaving behind only the faint scent of heather and the echo of her final words.

Lily leaned against Severus's side as they stood alone at the gate, watching the spot where McGonagall had vanished. "She's right, you know, " she said softly. "We do need to take care of each other."

"I believe that was the purpose of today's ceremony, " Severus replied, his arm tightening around her waist.

Lily felt the complex emotions beneath his measured response, pride, determination, and a fierce protectiveness that had only strengthened since their Hogwarts days. But there was something else there too, a warmth that hadn't existed in his first life, a capacity for happiness he was still learning to embrace.

"It's strange, " she mused as they turned to walk back toward the celebration. "When we were students, I never imagined McGonagall being so... personal."

"She always saw more than she let on, " Severus said thoughtfully. "Even back then."

"Do you think she suspects? About your... unique circumstances?"

Severus considered this as they passed beneath an archway strung with fairy lights. "Perhaps not the specifics, but she knows something beyond the ordinary occurred. She's too observant to miss the changes in my behavior between fifth and sixth year."

"The sudden maturity, the strategic planning, the advanced magical knowledge, " Lily listed, nodding. "Looking back, it must have seemed impossible for a sixteen-year-old."

"Yet she never directly confronted me, " Severus noted. "She observed, protected when necessary, but allowed me to follow my own course."

"Because she trusted you were trying to do the right thing, " Lily said. "Even when she didn't understand exactly what you were doing."

They paused in the shadow of the fortress wall, momentarily hidden from the rest of the gathering. Severus turned to face her fully, his dark eyes reflecting the distant lantern light.

"Few people have ever trusted me that way, " he said quietly. "You. Regulus. Eventually, McGonagall. It's something I'll never take for granted."

Lily reached up to touch his face, her palm warm against his cheek. "It's not about trust being given, Severus. It's about connection. About choosing to believe in each other."

She felt his understanding, and his continued amazement that after everything, she had chosen him. Not just chosen, but fought for him, believed in him, loved him despite knowing the darkness he was capable of in another life.

"Come on, " she said, taking his hand and leading him back toward the light and music. "We have guests waiting, and a celebration to finish."

"And after?" he asked, something warming in his voice that sent a pleasant shiver through her.

Lily smiled, the silver lily at her throat glowing softly in response to her emotions. "After belongs to us alone."

As they rejoined their friends, the music swelled around them. Regulus raised his glass in greeting, while Mary immediately pulled Lily into a complex dance step. Through it all, the bond between them hummed with shared joy, with promise, with the certainty that whatever came next, they would face it together, just as they had faced everything else.

Always.

The small group migrated indoors as the night air grew cooler, settling into the great hall where a fire roared in the massive hearth. The newlyweds sat together on a small sofa, Lily tucked against Severus's side as though she'd always belonged there.

"I propose a toast, " Frank announced, refilling everyone's glasses with the last of the elvish wine. "To survival."

"To survival, " they echoed, glasses raised in the firelight.

"And another, " Mary added, her cheeks flushed with wine and happiness. "To second chances."

Severus tightened his arm around Lily imperceptibly. "To second chances, " he agreed, his voice low but firm.

Sirius sprawled in an armchair, legs dangling over one arm. "Remember when you hexed me bald in fifth year?" he asked Severus, unexpectedly.

"Which time?" Severus replied, deadpan.

Laughter erupted, and suddenly the floodgates opened. Stories poured forth, school rivalries, near-misses, ridiculous pranks, all transformed by time and shared experience into something they could laugh about together.

"The day Severus turned James's broom into a python during Quidditch practice, " Regulus recalled, wiping tears from his eyes.

"That was brilliant strategy, " Severus said mildly. "Potter's fear of snakes was well-documented."

"The time Lily charmed all the suits of armor to recite poetry whenever Slughorn walked past, " Alice countered, grinning at the memory.

"In my defense, " Lily protested, "he had just given James special privileges for the third time that week. Someone needed to deflate his ego."

Even Severus found himself smiling as the night wore on, the memories no longer painful but part of a shared history that had somehow, against all odds, led them here.

Sirius discovered an enchanted gramophone in the corner and set it playing, pulling Mary to her feet for an exaggerated waltz that had her laughing until she couldn't breathe. Frank and Alice joined in, their movements more graceful but no less joyful.

Regulus transfigured cushions into comfortable mattresses scattered around the great hall, conjuring blankets with a practiced flick of his wand. "For when we inevitably collapse, " he explained.

As the night deepened, they shared quieter confidences, hopes for the future, plans being made, dreams taking shape in the aftermath of war. For the first time in years, they spoke like young people again, unburdened by strategy and survival.

"I'm thinking of traveling, " Sirius said, sprawled across one of the conjured mattresses. "See the world beyond Britain. Maybe find some purpose that doesn't involve hexing Death Eaters."

"The Americas?" Remus asked, settling nearby with his own glass.

"Maybe. Or the Continent. Somewhere I can just... breathe." Sirius's usual bravado had faded, revealing something more vulnerable beneath. "I spent so long fighting my family, then fighting with you lot. I'd like to figure out who Sirius Black is when he's not fighting anyone."

"That's... actually quite mature of you, " Regulus said, surprised.

"Don't get used to it, " Sirius grinned, but the sincerity remained.

Mary kicked off her shoes and curled up on another mattress. "I've been offered a position at the Prophet, " she announced. "Junior reporter, covering magical creature rights."

"You'll be brilliant, " Lily said warmly. "Transform that place from the inside."

"That's the plan. Someone needs to counter Skeeter's poison." Mary's eyes gleamed with determination. "The war might be over, but the work isn't done."

Frank and Alice exchanged a glance, some silent communication passing between them. "We're going back to Auror training, " Frank said. "The department needs rebuilding, and we want to be part of that."

"Mad-Eye Moody's agreed to mentor us personally, " Alice added. "Says we've got potential."

"High praise from Moody, " Severus observed. "Don't waste it."

"We won't, " Frank promised.

Regulus had been quiet, nursing his drink by the fire. When he finally spoke, his voice was thoughtful. "Gringotts has offered me a position in their international relations department. Apparently, my... unique perspective on pure-blood politics makes me valuable for goblin negotiations."

"Using your family connections for good, " Sirius said, raising his glass to his brother. "The old bastards would be rolling in their graves."

"One can hope, " Regulus replied with a rare smile.

All eyes turned to Remus, who had been listening more than speaking. He set down his glass carefully. "Dumbledore's offered me work with the Order, " he said. "Research on defensive spells, protective enchantments. Things that might prevent another war."

A brief silence fell. The Order of the Phoenix remained a complicated topic, respected but not entirely trusted, an ally but not one they'd surrendered their autonomy to.

"Will you take it?" Lily asked gently.

"I think so, " Remus said slowly. "But I'll maintain independence. The network we've built, " he gestured to encompass them all ", that remains separate. The Order doesn't need to know everything."

"Good, " Severus said simply. "Trust is earned, not given freely."

"Even to Dumbledore?" Mary asked.

"Especially to Dumbledore, " Severus replied. "He means well, but his methods..." He trailed off, leaving the criticism unfinished but understood.

They all knew what he meant. Dumbledore's tendency to manipulate, to withhold information "for the greater good, " had cost them dearly during the war. They respected him, but they'd learned to maintain their own counsel.

"To independence, " Sirius said, raising his glass once more. "And to never blindly following anyone's vision but our own."

"To independence, " they chorused.

The fire crackled lower, casting dancing shadows across the stone walls. One by one, they succumbed to exhaustion and wine, collapsing onto the makeshift beds or curling up in armchairs. Severus and Lily were the last to consider retiring, whispering together by the dying fire.

"They'll all be fine, " Lily said softly, watching their sleeping friends. "We'll all be fine."

"More than fine, " Severus agreed. "We've built something that will last."

"The Alliance, " she said, the capital letter clear in her tone.

"The family we chose, " he corrected gently.

They rose together, moving quietly toward the door. Behind them, their friends slept in a scattered circle, Alice and Frank curled together on a mattress, Mary spread-eagle on another, Regulus in a dignified pose on the sofa, Remus slouched in an armchair. Sirius had claimed the largest chair, his head tipped back, mouth open.

His thunderous snore rattled the windows.

Without opening his eyes, Regulus reached for a cushion and hurled it with unerring accuracy at his brother's head.

The snoring stopped, then resumed slightly quieter.

Severus and Lily paused at the doorway, taking in the scene one final time, this unlikely group who had become their family, safe and whole and together.

"Thank you, " Lily whispered, though whether to Severus, to fate, or to whatever forces had granted them this second chance, even she wasn't sure.

Severus simply took her hand and led her from the room, leaving their friends to their peaceful rest. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, new paths diverging as each pursued their chosen future. But tonight, they were all together, bound by shared history and chosen loyalty.

In the peaceful silence that followed, they slept, not as warriors or survivors, but simply as friends, safe under one roof, together at last.

Dawn crept through the high windows of Caisteal Dorcha, painting golden rectangles across the great hall floor. The scattered sleepers began to stir, first Regulus, ever the early riser, then Mary with a dramatic stretch that nearly caught Remus in the face. Frank helped Alice to her feet, both wincing at muscles stiffened from sleeping on transfigured cushions.

In the kitchen, Severus was already brewing coffee, his movements precise despite the early hour. The rich aroma filled the stone chamber, drawing the others toward it like a magical summons.

"I think I might still be drunk, " Sirius mumbled, collapsing into a chair at the long wooden table. His hair stood in wild directions, and he squinted against the morning light streaming through narrow windows.

"You're not, " Severus replied, setting a steaming mug before him. "Just suffering the consequences of your decisions."

Lily appeared in the doorway, fresh-faced and glowing in a simple green dress. Her hair was loose around her shoulders, the silver lily pendant catching the light at her throat. "Good morning, " she said, her eyes finding Severus immediately.

"Morning, Mrs. Snape, " Mary grinned, raising her coffee in salute.

A soft smile spread across Lily's face at the name. She moved to Severus's side, accepting the mug he offered. "Sleep well?" she asked the gathered group.

"Like the dead, " Frank said, helping himself to toast from a platter Regulus had prepared. "Though someone, " he glanced pointedly at Sirius ", snores like a Hungarian Horntail with sinus problems."

"Slander, " Sirius protested weakly, his head now resting on the table beside his untouched coffee.

Breakfast emerged as a communal effort, Alice conjured fresh fruit, Remus discovered preserves in a cupboard, Mary managed to produce a platter of scrambled eggs. They gathered around the table, passing dishes and refilling mugs, their conversation flowing easily despite the early hour.

"When do you start at St. Mungo's?" Regulus asked, directing the question to both Lily and Severus.

"Next Wednesday, " Lily answered. "We have a week to settle into the cottage in Devon and set up the home laboratory."

"The research equipment arrived yesterday, " Severus added. "I'll need to calibrate the cauldrons and verify the ingredient preservation charms."

"You two, " Mary shook her head fondly. "Couldn't even manage a proper honeymoon without setting up a potions lab."

"The research fellowship waits for no one, " Lily said, but her smile suggested she was perfectly content with this arrangement. "Besides, our work on the Wolfsbane improvements could help people immediately."

"Speaking of which, " Remus said, looking up from his toast, "I meant what I said about being available for testing. The current potion works, but if you can reduce the side effects..."

"That's the goal, " Severus said. "The existing formula is too harsh, causes unnecessary suffering. We can do better."

The conversation shifted naturally to everyone's plans, plans they'd discussed in the chaotic weeks following Voldemort's defeat, when they'd all gathered to determine their diverging paths forward.

Frank and Alice would return to Auror training under Moody's demanding tutelage. Mary would begin reshaping magical journalism from within the Prophet. Regulus would navigate the complex world of goblin relations at Gringotts. Remus would work with the Order while maintaining the independent network they'd all built together.

And Sirius, Sirius would find himself, somewhere far from the weight of the Black family name and the memories of war.

"I'm thinking I'll leave next week, " Sirius said, finally lifting his head from the table. "Give myself time to say proper goodbyes, tie up loose ends."

"And avoid helping us move, " Lily teased gently.

"That too, " Sirius admitted with a grin. "But honestly, I need to figure out who I am when I'm not defined by what I'm fighting against. My family, Death Eaters, the war... I've spent my whole life in opposition to something. Time to find out what I'm for."

"Write to us, " Lily said seriously. "Wherever you end up. Let us know you're alright."

"I will, " Sirius promised. "You lot are stuck with me, distance or not."

As morning sunshine strengthened, filling the kitchen with golden light, the gathering took on a bittersweet quality. Everyone felt it, the approaching moment when they would scatter to their separate futures, when this perfect unity would fracture into distance and separate lives.

"We should get going soon, " Frank said finally, checking his watch. "Training starts at noon, and Moody threatened creative punishments for tardiness."

Alice nodded, though reluctance showed in her eyes. "Probably something involving permanent Sticking Charms and uncomfortable positions."

One by one, they began gathering their belongings, straightening clothes, preparing to depart. The kitchen gradually emptied as they moved toward the courtyard where they could Disapparate beyond the castle's protective wards.

Mary hugged Lily fiercely. "Write to me, " she insisted. "Every detail of married life and groundbreaking potion research."

"I make no promises about the research details being interesting, " Lily laughed, returning the embrace. "But I'll write."

Regulus approached Severus with a more formal handshake, though the gesture held genuine warmth. "The offer stands, " he said quietly. "If you need anything, resources, information, assistance, the Black name still opens doors, and I'm finally using it properly."

"Thank you, " Severus replied, the simple words heavy with meaning between them. Their blood oath had faded to a thin silver scar on their palms, but the bond of brotherhood remained.

Frank and Alice made their goodbyes with promises of dinner soon, once they'd survived Moody's initial training regimen. Remus embraced Lily, then surprised Severus by offering his hand as well.

"The Wolfsbane research, " he said. "I'm available whenever you need a test subject. Monthly cycles are predictable, at least."

Severus nodded. "We'll be in touch before the next full moon. I want to start with incremental modifications rather than wholesale changes to the formula."

"Cautious approach, " Remus approved. "I appreciate that."

Sirius was last, his casual demeanor briefly falling away as he pulled Lily into a bear hug. "Be happy, Evans, Snape, " he corrected himself. "You've earned it."

He turned to Severus, awkwardness returning as they regarded each other. The history between them was too long and complicated for easy resolution, but they'd found a working peace.

"Don't suppose you'd accept a hug?" Sirius asked.

"I'd hex you where you stand, " Severus replied, though without genuine malice.

"Thought as much." Sirius grinned, extending his hand instead. "Take care of her, Snape. She's one of the best people I know."

"I'm aware, " Severus said, accepting the handshake. "Always."

They gathered in a circle one last time, these unlikely allies who had become family through shared danger and purpose. For a moment, no one moved, each face memorizing the others, holding onto this perfect unity before the necessary scattering.

"This isn't really goodbye, " Mary said firmly. "Just... see you soon."

"The Alliance endures, " Regulus agreed, using the name they'd given their independent network. "Distance doesn't change that."

Frank raised his wand in salute, Alice mirroring the gesture beside him. One by one, they all did the same, wands lifted toward the center of their circle, a final pledge of continued loyalty despite the distances that would separate them.

"To the Alliance, " Frank said.

"To the family we chose, " Lily added.

"To the future we'll build, " Severus finished.

Their wands created a web of light where they met, different colors interweaving in a pattern that represented their unity. It held for a heartbeat, two, three, then dissolved as they lowered their wands.

Then, with the sharp crack of Disapparition, they began to vanish. Frank and Alice first, hands clasped as they turned together into nothingness. Mary followed with a dramatic wave. Remus disappeared more quietly, his smile the last thing to fade. Regulus gave a formal nod before turning on his heel and vanishing with characteristic precision. Sirius waved, blew Lily a theatrical kiss, and was gone with the loudest crack of all.

Severus and Lily stood alone in the courtyard, the echoes of their friends' departures fading into morning stillness. The castle around them seemed to exhale, settling back into its ancient rhythms. Remnants of the celebration remained, flower petals scattered across stone, a forgotten glass on a windowsill, the lingering scent of enchanted blooms.

Severus took Lily's hand, his thumb brushing across the simple gold band on her finger. He felt her complex emotions, joy from the wedding, wistfulness at their friends' departure, anticipation for what came next.

Lily's gaze drifted upward to the eastern tower where their secret garden bloomed in the morning light. She could just make out the willow sapling swaying gently in the sea breeze, the moonflowers now closed against the daylight, waiting for dusk to open again.

"It feels strange, " she said softly. "Leaving it behind."

Severus followed her gaze, understanding immediately. "It will be here, " he said quietly. "Growing. Waiting. A place that's ours alone, whenever we need it."

"A sanctuary, " she agreed, the word settling something in her chest. Not an ending, but an anchor. A living testament to what they'd built, rooted in stone and soil, enduring even when they were miles away.

"The cottage in Devon is practical, " Severus continued, his dark eyes still on the tower. "Close to St. Mungo's, suitable for our research. But this, " he gestured to encompass the fortress, the garden above, the chapel where they'd married ", this is home. The place we return to."

Lily squeezed his hand, understanding flowing through their bond. The garden would grow in their absence, the willow would strengthen its roots, the lilies would bloom season after season. And they would return to it, again and again, to remember who they were in this moment, young and hopeful, survivors building something beautiful from the ashes of war.

"Ready?" he asked quietly.

Lily looked up at him, her green eyes bright with certainty. "For everything, " she replied.

Through their bond, the silver lily at her throat glowing softly in response, Severus shared not words but feelings, their research at St. Mungo's, quiet evenings in their Devon cottage, returning to Caisteal Dorcha for respite and renewal, perhaps children someday playing in that secret garden, a future built choice by choice, day by day.

"Everything, " he said aloud, his voice holding a certainty that had been hard-won through two lifetimes of struggle. "Everything that was denied us before. Everything we choose now."

"Together, " Lily said, not a question but a promise.

"Always, " Severus replied, the word carrying the weight of all they had survived to reach this moment.

Around them, the courtyard lay washed in bright morning light. The stones still warm from the previous night's celebration, petals scattered like remnants of a blessing. The fortress stood solid and enduring, transformed from a place of war into a sanctuary of new beginnings, a sanctuary that would wait for their return.

Hand in hand, they turned toward the gate. Beyond it lay their cottage in Devon, their laboratory, their research, their working life together. But behind them remained Caisteal Dorcha, their true home, their garden growing wild and beautiful, their Alliance Record sealed in silver in the chapel, their wedding night memories held within ancient stone walls.

As they crossed the threshold and prepared to Apparate, Lily glanced back one final time at the eastern tower. A flash of green caught her eye, the willow sapling, already taller than it had been yesterday, reaching toward the sun.

Growing. Waiting. Enduring.

She smiled and turned back to Severus, ready now.

Together they turned on the spot, disappearing with a single, unified crack that echoed across the silent stones.

The courtyard stood empty now, but not lonely. The morning sun continued to climb, casting long shadows that would shorten as the day progressed. Inside, the Alliance Record remained in the chapel, their signatures linked in silver light, a permanent testament to the bond they'd forged. Above, in the secret garden, the willow swayed and the lilies turned their faces to the light, growing stronger with each passing day.

And somewhere in Devon, in a small cottage with a well-equipped laboratory, two researchers began their working life together, building on the foundation of a love that had conquered time, death, and fate itself.

But they would return. The garden would see them again, older and wiser, their bond deeper, their roots intertwined like the willow's growing branches. Caisteal Dorcha would always be waiting, their sanctuary, their monument, their home.

Always.
