Surely its easy to say that they needed to do something to help their comrades, but freezing up in the face of danger isn't that uncommon. No amount of training and simulation will prepare you to the real combat where even the slightest mistake means you are dead. Those are literally teens/kids, they've already seen life examples of what happens to those who act like heroes.
