His character John Munch was first a Detective in Baltimore on the show "Homicide: Life On The Streets", which takes place in Baltimore and is kind of a prequel of this show. Hence why he knows the bar on "The Wire". Then he left Baltimore and became a Detective in NYC, hence why he's on "Law & Order". So "Homicide", "The Wire", and "Law & Order" all exists in the same universe. As does "The X Files", Munch appeared in an episode of that show as well, which is fucking awesome. Detective John Munch is The Watcher of TV cops.
