Yuji wasn’t confused because he wasn’t aware of it, he was confused because gojo framed it as a secret weapon rather than a bad habit. Basically all sorcerers will enhance their punches with cursed energy, and with most sorcerers there will be some sort of delay between the physical punch and the extra blow of cursed energy; the difference with yuji is that his superhuman body moves too fast for his cursed energy to keep up so the delay in cursed energy is so great that it is actually noticeable and is perceived as 2 blows in quick succession. That is divergent fist.
