This is the part that sucks. Eliminating it all together is dangerous and shortsighted, but requiring actual filibusters is probably a good idea.

2021-08-24 16:00:37 +0000 UTCThe filibuster has been an option since 1789 but was not used until the 1830s. It was not made up to block civil rights. It is ridiculous the way the modern filibuster works. That I agree with. Only physical filibusters should be allowed.

2021-08-22 22:13:12 +0000 UTCFun fact: the fillibuster rules currently in place for the federal government do not require anyone to stand and talk down legislation for hours. Filibustering at the Senatorial level is virtually effortless and not time consuming at all for any party involved.

2021-08-19 20:58:56 +0000 UTCBasically the filibuster is a rule the Senate made up in the mid 20th century in order to block civil rights legislation. Segregationists like Strom Thurmond would stand on the senate floor and read the phone book to prevent votes from going through. Today, the way the filibuster works is completely insane. A single senator just has to basically send out an email saying they filibuster and suddenly the bill needs 60 votes to pass completely undermining majority rule. Republicans started using filibuster everything as a tactic under Obama to grind government to a halt and completely stopping the Obama admnistration's agenda in order to make him a one term president. It was also used to stop the Obama administration from filling any vacant judgeships for years until the Democrats eventually got rid of the filibuster on judicial nominations. However, this still had an effect of leaving a lot of judicial positions open which then were immediately filled as soon as Trump was in office. A successful conservative takeover of the judiciary. So, now we're at a standstill where nothing can be passed without 60 votes and not a single republican will budge to vote on anything with any Democratic support.

2021-08-19 18:13:49 +0000 UTCThe thing is that the filibuster as we know it (talking and not yielding the floor for a long time) is not what is “filibustering” is right now. As of now “filibustering” is when the Senate cannot end discussion of a bill and move on to voting for it because they do not have cloture. Basically, to pass a bill, you must first vote to allow it to be voted on, if that makes sense. In order to have cloture, you must have 60 votes which is a tall order when you only have a simple majority. The “filibuster” is only meant to obstruct, which is what the republicans want. Progressive bills stagnate in the senate due to not having enough votes to allow the bill to be voted into passage. This is a fairly recent phenomenon, as well. The use of the cloture “filibuster” has gone up more within the last couple of decades and most of it due to the GOP doing it. The “filibuster” must be taken away so that actual things can be done, instead of the stagnation and obstruction we are experiencing now

The point is to prevent a vote and can be used to prevent bad things, though it hasn't been used for that lately. You'll be happy it exists next time the right owns the white house and both congressional houses.
