I think the Mayo thing was in this episode..... ode actually hmmm now I got to go re watch

The Sloth King

Also Subaru is a giant weeb which is why his room like that and Subaru also likes mayonnaise which is why his mom offered that to him I didn’t see it in the normal reaction vid but if you were wondering about that scene that’s why like he likes it so much that he literally teachers rem and ram how to make it

The Sloth King

Marketa continues to be the most empathetic reactor on this couch, and I’m glad for her constant presence. This episode, at least in the original sub, had me teary eyed. Nahid acknowledged that Subaru is still going through teenage emotions, and while that’s true, I’ll say that this isn’t so much angst as it is genuine heartache from a son. It doesn’t matter how old you are in life, you’re always going to have regrets and shortcomings when it comes to your parents. For that reason, this episode hits hard.

This was one of the most emotional moments in the season, I cried when I saw it.!!! 😢 Honestly season 2 is very emotional.!!! Btw, that Jojo reference, lol. My roommate says everything is a Jojo reference to her. 🤣

Joanaver

i feel you. Compared to other dubs, this one is actually pretty good but the original sub is top tier even among subs (Subaru's voice actor got 'Voice Actor of the Year' at the crunchroll anime awards and Rie Takahashi, Emilia's voice actor, is one of the most famous in the business. You really see the difference in episodes with a lot of emotion (sadly i think episode 8 will be cringe too...)

ara ara!??!

Alex cleveland

Great, now I can't get the idea out of my head that he died...I've seen enough animes to know that's usually the case for the story lol

MojoJojoGojo

lol I cried like a lil bitch this ep. I mean I watched this when it first aired and in subbed, so a huge difference in reaction😬

This ep also fills in a lot more explanations back in S1. First example is back in the first episode and your guy's confusion on why Subaru looked so happy and acceptable when he was transported to this world. It wasn’t the fact because being Isekai to another world became a reality to him. It was also because he thought he can actually start all over again and live a new life, because the life he was living previously in the real world was hardly what you call living. Yet after going through all those hardships throughout S1 prior to saving Emilia. That was when he realized that nothing about him has changed at all. That he was the same old person who cared about how others saw him. Which gives ep 18 in S1 a lot more meaning because we couldn't fully understand on what he meant during the scene where he was yelling at Rem about nothing about him has changed and that he did 'nothing' before he came into that world. But now we know the reason why he cared so much about how other's thought about him, was because of that sense of superiority he got from growing up as Kunichi's son. We also see him have outbursts of theatrical behavior, which became more frequent the more stress he is. This was because this was the only way he knew how to interact with people, prior to living a life of isolation in his world. The only person he could use as references to built relationships was his father. But the only thing is, he's father always acted in a overly-top manner that wouldn't normally be suited into meeting new people, which we saw in the High School flashback, Subaru tried to mimick his dad's behavior to make new friends, but only ended up making the environment he was in more stressful. Thus causing those outbursts a lot more frequently, to a point where no one wanted to associate themselves with him, which made Subaru to no longer wanted to go to school anymore and shut himself up from the world. Another fact: Subaru and Kunichi collect bottle caps from the bottle of mayonnaise they received from Nahoko. It was cut out, but Subaru eventually accepts the bottle of mayonnaise that his mother offers him, making his bottle cap collection exactly at 777, while his father is on his 7777. Sad fact: Since Subaru's parents aren't really brought up again. Someone ask the author a question during a Q&A about what's the current situation at the Natsuki household. Which the author replied with: "They’re enduring the disappearance of their eldest son somehow or other. The police investigation has no leads, and Kenichi is trying to comfort Nahoko but it’s not that effective. They’re passing each day tearfully."

So, on the school thing, in Japan Highschool (Grade 10-12) is completely optional. It is not a requirement, only Elementary-Middle is.

So as far as we know Subaru was transported into this other world. In the first episode we see him walk out of the gas station and he starts feeling weird and blinking and when he opens his eyes up and he is in another world. I don't think you guys understand a lot even after watching this episode yourselves lol. You can criticize Subaru for things he could have done because your are watching from an outside perspective but while you have understandable points for him it is still him himself going through that in his own life. Like nowadays as an adult I look back and criticize myself when I did things and went through states of depression because I have grown and experienced it all already. Subaru kept having that constant hurting because going to school became his worst fear and it gave him anxiety because of his depression and what he is going through in life. Suicide is not something that has been alluded to at all as far as we know and that hurting he had was specifically when school was a topic. I don't quite understand why you guys keep going back to the thought that he got put into a coma or got killed or something. It literally showed what happened in the very beginning of the series. The title itself says starting life in another world. That is what this type of series is. The series is placed in a genre of anime called Isekai. Isekai is when the main character or multiple characters somehow get transported to another and unfamiliar world. That is literally a whole genre of what multiple anime series make their foundation off of. Now they can definitely die and go into a new world in their "next life" and that is a popular way to do it but that isn't what we have been shown for this series.

I think this episode together with the confession episode really shows that this show loses a lot of impact in the dub. Probably one of the best episodes of any show ever, and instead of the tear-jerking emotional response, you guys cuffed at a couple of lines and chalked it up to teen angst, which is I don't blame on you for being "bad" reactors but rather having a disconnect to the show, mainly because of the dubbed voice acting not giving that amazing emotional pain that conveys Subarus depression, regret and hopefulness.

Shadi Ødegaarden

How he got to this new fantasy world and why is obviously one of the large mysteries of the show so I wouldn't exactly say that they show did a "poor job" explaining. They've actually given some information about it and will continue to do so. It seems pretty clear that it isn't an oversight, but instead an open question that will eventually be answered.

Brandon Miller

That was pretty underwhelming

Bernard

Re:Zero is like AOT; further down the show, you will learn more and understand more as you watch more seasons throughout the journey. So don't expect answers for all the huge mysteries to come all in one season. The show slowly breaks down the mystery in a great way!!

Alex cleveland

They speculate about the weirdest stuff sometimes man lol, the first minute of the first episode shows how he changed worlds, he just blinked and was in another world and the heavy implication is Satella brought him for reasons that are unexplained so far

That thumbnail is such a mood for this show in general.

Johnny Blue

I know freeze frames can sometimes belie the actual mood of the moment but....... geez, that thumbnail though. It's like someone just died.

And..... I am back to not liking the dub that much again. The dub made me cringe after I was warming up just a tiny bit to it. Edit: I guess it isn't terrible but I think this episode specifically was hard for me compared to the original sub to not compare it based on the type of episode it is.

L.C.

Even though I think Jojo references in general are overused at this point and even Nahid probably doesn't understand what it truly means I still find it funny that the other 3 don't know that it is a Jojo reference and said it had to do with boomers. Makes me think that Nahid is the least boomer type of person in the room. You really live up to your name of the normies.

L.C.

The enthusiasm in the thumbnail sums up my life right now.

L.C.

you guys look very excited in the thumbnail 😂

That thumbnail says it all
