I'm pretty sure Pyrrha always had that black glow as a visual representation of her power, even when she used it on Jaune's shield in volume 1. I don't think other characters can see it, it's just a visual thing for viewers to see she's using her power.

The first time we learned about Pyrrha's polarity power was back in Volume 1 when she used it to help Jaune in his fight against that Ursa in the arc with Cardin. In Volume 2, Mercury also noted that she keeps it subtle when she uses it so that her opponents don't actually know what she is doing. Against normal human opponents, it's a pretty broken power for this setting just because of the sheer number of people that either use metal weapons or wear armor like when she repelled Jaune last episode by his metal chest piece.

I think they forgot about Mountain Glenn and how Ruby was tossed around by Torchwick, as she didn’t have her weapon. Forgetful Normies🤷🏽‍♀️.

Ruby got quickly stopped by Merc because she had no weapon. Her scythe is still in her locker. All her combat training involves her scythe. With her scythe she might have stood a good chance.

It was showed at the end of the last episode that Ruby reached for her weapon but she didn’t have it on her (because why would she need it when she is just watching the tournament) and that is a large part of her fighting style so it’s understandable why she would lose to Mercury who uses a more melee approach

You guys are also completely forgetting that Penny is one of a kind. She's the only synthetic person capable of generating an aura meaning she has a soul. Also the black effect with Pyrrha's semblance is just to better illustrate when she's using it. It was also definately visible in the forest with Juane's shield
