It's semi autobiographical about the writer/director's experiences during WW2 in Japan with his little sister. It is considered one of the greatest war movies, and it's a realistic masterpiece of cinema that I think you 4 would enjoy.

Whether or not you prefer the Extended or Theatrical I always suggest watching the theatricals first. If you do EE first then it would undercut moments that would hit better in the theatricals. Whereas if you do it theatrical first it helps to later see what the EE adds and if you like it better.
