This week we'll look at hoppers, soldiers and kings.

2021-02-12 13:14:25 +0000 UTCI’ve seen the wire 5 or 6 times and I can’t imagine it without Avon. He was more just a villain the first time I saw it. But he became so much more. He represents the old way of doing things, the only ‘king’ that could possibly stand against the likes of Marloe, and he was the first one to be smart enough to really challenge the Wire or even Omar. Plus the actor fit him so well.

2021-02-09 20:02:08 +0000 UTCBodie is my favorite, remains charismatic and likeable despite doing some unlikeable shit now and again, but in context it's hard to really blame him for anything. Take Wallace. Once Stringer had given him the order, what choice did he have? Him and Poot are victims in that situation too IMO. They could barely bring themselves to do it. Anyway, part of Bodie's relatability is the performance by JD Williams, part of it is the way he is written as we start to see him slowly grow into his new responsibilities, part of it is how many great lines he gets. Close behind him is Avon, maybe my favorite TV mob boss/gangster (him or Tony Soprano). Then Proposition Joe, quotable, hilarious, and one of the calmer and more level-headed criminals we've seen so far. Then Brother Mouzone, a very entertaining larger-than-life character. Last Stringer, who's just a snake. A fascinating, complex, well written and awesomely acted snake...but a snake.

2021-02-09 19:56:36 +0000 UTCHuh? Stringer screwed up the Orlando situation and stringer is the one struggling because Avon is not home. Also Stringer literally slept D girl then had him killed. Name one instance where Avon wasn’t about business? Hell the only other thing he values is family.

With some characters the joy is in watching the struggle between who they are and who they think they are and who they want to be and who the people they respect want them to be. With Bodie the joy is in knowing that all those things are the same. He's flawed and capable of doing terrible things (RIP our boy Wallace) but he's exactly who he wants to be. The tragedy of him is he can't begin to imagine being anything else.
