[Reaction Request] Babylon 5 - 1x1 Midnight on the Firing Line - Group Reaction

Comments

This is a very good sci fi show. A VERY GOOD SCI FI SHOW. Please keep at it. It gets better and better.

Remember as well this was made to be viewed on a 27 - 32 inch CRT tv. So they probably needed more cues like audio and dramatic gestures vs a high definition LED tv.

so my friend's dad used to try and get me to watch this show but I refused because it looked old and weird. A few years back after hearing so much great stuff about it I decided to give it a go. I had a lot of down time and wanted to watch a space opera so why the fuck not right? Anyway, I decided to give it a go. The first season was weird and slow, the style felt dated, the graphics were dated, I honestly don’t know why I stuck with it. BUT I’m so glad I did stick with it because this is one of the best sci fi space shows ever made. The story gets more complex, more intrigue, amazing characters, great plot, amazing politics and alien races with distinct cultures, and once you’re done watching it you understand why it’s such a cult classic. BUT the show really needs to be rebooted and redone for the modern era. I hear that visual effects technology made a huge leap right after it was made so the show looks extra old and dated because of this. But even the style of acting feels really dated too. Like the way the psychics act when they use their powers is really funny with the cheesy background music. I want more people to watch the show and just give it a chance but most people won’t because of all the hurdles. I really doubt the normies will watch it and probably none of the normie viewers will either because of all the obstacles. But despite that it is one of the best TV sci fi space operas ever made and if anyone likes space operas and has the patience they should give it chance.

Thank you for reacting to this. It's one of my favorite series and just seeing everyone enjoy it helps me remember why I like it so much. I'd love to see you react to the full show, but even this is a nice thing to see.

Irosko

Let me know if this starts to gain some traction I wouldn't mind chipping in to see more.

Not sure if this episode was specifically requested, but if you were to continue watching the series, watching the pilot movie “The Gathering” does introduce story arc elements for later in the show. And I would concur that B5 really finds its footing later in Season 2 through Season 4.

Michael O'Hare, who plays Jeffrey Sinclair, had to leave the show in the first season because of serious mental illness and is one of the saddest stories in 90's tv.

Chaos T

The first season is the worst and you can see a dramatic change in the quality once season two premiered and Bruce Boxleitner took over as lead.

Chaos T

Agreed. I did a recent re-watch and it's crazy how relevant the story is today.

Chaos T

Babylon 5 rocks!

Lateralusian (Clem)

I still think season 3-4 are some of the best sci-fi ever. I thought that was mostly due to nastalgia but after getting hyped for this episode I think it's still super relevant.

The last great thing about this show is, while I love Star Trek, this show takes away the Deus ex machina where Earth has solved most all social issues and divisiveness, greed, envy, etc no longer exist. This just takes technology to a new level but keeps human foibles in it's universe as well as puts them into other species, so it's not just "See humans are so chaotic versus our perfect society."

Aes86

And Marketa is right. She read his mind, not the future. And it is explored more.... WAAAAaay more. A telepath makes you dangerous. It's like Mutants in the Marvel universe. The same conundrum. Also Marketa said something else very portentious in her comments. Maybe she is psychic. And Mickey is way off base on his metaphors.

Aes86

You should look up the actors, you'll recognize some of them. Stephen Furst who plays Londo's aide was "Flounder" in Animal house.

Aes86

If Suraj had watched, do you think he would have recognized Danielle from LOST? :)

The great thing about Babylon 5 is that they had a 5 year story arc written before the show even started. The first season is ok. The CGI is of course not as good as now, but the story and characters are awesome. And the little things in this episode turn out to be huge story arcs. Almost like AOS with breadcrumbs at the beginning .

Normie fam, I know this is the last of the Reaction Request tier; but I'm going to put this out there. Get in touch with me if you want, think about what you'd need to do Season 1 and Season 2. I'll fund it directly via PayPal if it's something I can afford. Season 3 onward is on you if you wish to continue. Give it a thought and let me know. Truth is that I continue to Patreon (especially during the pandemic) because I appreciate and support you guys and your creative endeavours; but this is the first show reaction I've watched since MAOS ended. The only other shows I've watched since 1998 are Scrubs, The Big Bang Theory, and The Good Place.

As much as I appreciate the historical significance of Babylon 5 and how much better it got in subsequent seasons (I've watched most of the show, never quite finished it), I wonder who thought "Yeah, sure they're reacting to tons of stuff already and have TONS of reaction requests, but when they see this first episode they'll be HOOKED." lol. The whole first season was pretty goofy if I remember correctly.

outdoorcats

Oh my yes, it doesn't heat up until late Season 2. Kind of like MAOS kinda. It's indescribably worth it by the end. True story: When Babylon 5 ended, I canceled the cable subscription because there was no longer any point. I haven't watched broadcast TV since 1998.

The comparison is often made to DS9, another (space station) show that had to find it's footing at first, and then delivered very compelling drama, same as B5. The beautiful scenes between G'Kar and Londo even get emotional for the viewer

MrEvers

The 2nd-5th seasons of the shows were a lot better. This show was one of the forerunners of using a structured sequential storytelling on the regular in sci-fi television. The stand alone movies were really good too.

Professor00

I love B5, but you really need to get through the first season, which is kind of rough and dated by today's standards. It improves significantly by season two when JMS was responsible for writing every episode from that season forward. Its a little strange for a one episode reaction request because it takes so long to really find it's footing.

Mere_Prologue

Moments like this...I'm glad they killed requests.

KevinFromNewYork

This is a weirder request than Kid Nation
