If you read history, especially something like Roman history, then you see why someone not in the royal family or line of succession might take over. A lot of generals and right hand men to Emperors ended up becoming the next Emperor after overthrowing a weaker successor to the former emperor.

You guys mentioned how you thought the kingdom's loyalty to Harrow would naturally fall to his son, but what if his son is trying to lead them down a path they don't want to follow? Then why not the man who stood at Harrow's right hand and was clearly one of his most trusted advisors? Keep in mind all the evil, dark magic things we've seen Viren do, nobody else has and he was only in the dungeons for an unsanctioned meeting of the monarchs because he was concerned about the Xadian threat. Remember it wasn't too long ago, Viren helped from keeping half the kingdom from starving to death and he magic-ed enough food to last for years yet. I do think Viren is meant to come off as a well-intentioned extremist. Yes, he enjoys the power, but at the same time, I think he truly believes they need to wipe out the Xadians before the Xadians wipe them out.

Opeli and Corvus should've just killed Viern in the darkness of night while he was still in his cell. Ezran wouldn't have been the wiser. Lol

Agree on Viren - I like that he's not evil for evil's sake, like (certain other animated show villains). He really does believe he's doing the right thing. But in this episode you can see he's being sincere when he says Claudia is his daughter, not an asset to be used in war. re: bug and eye, I saw it as a mix of things. Some people support him and want to attack Xadia. Some people oppose him but are too scared to lay down their arms or challenge him. And many are in the middle, not sure what to do and afraid to challenge the status quo.

The black haired soldier who lays down his sword isn't the Crow Lord; he has a name but I'm not even sure they said it yet since he's been so minor. He's the soldier from the first episode that Rayla spares and who kind of helped set a lot of the initial conflicts in motion (told humans of elf assassins; is seen by elves alive, causing the schism with Rayla who lied about killing him). He has some other appearances scattered throughout before now as a sort of featured background character. The soulfang snakes that make the desert so dangerous were mentioned last episode, but are also a callback to the first episode: Viren produces a rare two-headed soulfang serpent as part of a plan to capture two souls and use dark magic to switch their bodies so that someone else would die for King Harrow in his body. And I think everyone can see the bug and eye; Viren is just very known as the dark mage in court. Anyone in the place has probably seen him do weird stuff, wear weird stuff, glow purple, etc. for years. I think those who are rooting for him just accept that he's gonna do some creepy villainous dark mage shit, but since it's against the perceived enemy of Xadia it counts as heroic salvation to them. I loved the Pat impression. I do like Viren as a character...it's nice that as a villain he's serious but still has a sense of humor (his bleak orphan joke) and human attachments (his love for his daughter...not quite as much for Soren it seems).

Keeping Ezran locked up in jail was the right thing to do during that time period. Whether or not he willingly gave up the crown or not is irrelevant. He is still of royal blood and the legitimate king. Seeing Ezran walking around town casually while Viren is on the throne making questionable decisions could easily inspire others to start a rebellion/civil war to get Ezran back on the throne. Honestly, if Opeli wasn't part of the High Council, it would have been a good idea to have Ezran killed after he gave up the crown. But then again, that was Viren's plan in season 1. Killing Ezran now that Viren is temporarily king would garner too much suspicion.
