I think you guys had it confused; Mike isn't the "friend of a friend". The quote you're referring to is "I know a guy that knows a guy that knows another guy"--Saul was referring to Gus, not Mike. Saul/Jimmy never met Gus.

That's one of the explanations for him being such a great shot - he was a sniper in the war then came home and became a cop, retired due to the matty situation and now this. Gives a little more context into his near superhuman aim lol
