This was a really good episode. I don't think I appreciated it enough when I first watched it.

The way this fight panned out sets the stage for everything going forward. Basically, what Shikamaru said holds true: they have to be ready and willing to die if they want to hope to see the mission through. You guys reacted as expected. Now buckle up, cause the feelsmobile ain't stopping any time soon. RIP Choji Oh and btw, "cho" in Japanese means butterfly. Hence all the imagery.

Goodbye Choji 😢 This episode always makes me cry. Choji who didn’t have much self-confidence was able to defeat him all on his own because he thought about how Shikamaru believed in him. Just one person is all you need. I loved the butterfly motif - how it first showed his kindness, then represented his metamorphosis, then guided him to his resting spot where it was affirmed that his friends truly cared about him (except Neji lmao. But hey maybe he just trusted Choji enough to win and find them without sentimental engravings), and finally acted as a sign to Shikamaru that he was down. That mega punch really did knock his heart out through the back and into the dirt 😂😂 It was death death. That’s what happens when you insult his bff and steal his last chip!!!! Blasphemy. Your discussion at the end was hilarious! I love how you ranged from shock to disbelief to denial to acceptance to still processing at 5%. Micky made some good points about Choji being a more minor character and his backstory was shown here for heart wrenching effect. The fact why Choji looks skinnier and cooler is because the red pill literally forcibly transfers his fat into chakura and gives him strength. This is how his clan's jutsu work. But the transfer mechanism cannot be stopped and his body is unable to provide enough fat into chakura, so it starts to seek another energy source to produce chakura, and Choji's body will barely maintain his vital function. That's the side effect.

The gut-wrenching episodes are what make Naruto so good, they can make you feel so attached to a side character and just pull it away from you just like that. I love this show and I’m so glad you guys are watching it and loving it also!

As a kid who grew up struggling with his own weight and social anxiety this part with Choji made me tear up and it honestly helped me get through alot of times. I never had anyone to talk to because all I had was a dog and a mom that worked 24/7 just so we could live. So the choji part really helped me out and made me feel special and I said "wow, if I had friends I'd fight for them just like that regardless of what others say even if they call me fat or worthless I'd still keep going" and then I grew up and my mentality still stays on that thought process. I got "better" with talking to people and I'm no longer nervous or ashamed of anything. Thanks Choji, you're a literal life saver

The dubs ruin this episode, in the original version it's meant to be about Shikamaru's & Choji's true friendship. But in the dub they try to insert Naruto into the dialogue. In the original there is nothing about a group of friends, Choji's dad is talking about a friend, finding someone like Shikamaru. Naruto is not much of a friend to Choji.
