Even though a hundred people already said this I will still repeat them( this is also the reason i wanted all fillers skip cuz they create misunderstandings) Sasuke got fucked real bad by itachi, he went through childhood trauma all over again for 24 hours. He thought he was improving but after what happened he knows he doesn’t stand a chance against his brother. Meanwhile Naruto, who was always a step behind him, is improving, at this point he wants to feel powerful again. Fillers only find a reason to continuously bring him back to hospital and they change the focus to jealousy but in actual manga it’s not simply just jealousy but also the realization that if even Naruto is better than him than Itachi is a whole new level. He realizes that he needs to get power anyway possible because his only goal in life is to kill his brother. Also In Manga he is in hospital after Getting his ass handed over by Itachi with all the emotions.

Chunin is basically the rank of certain platoon leaders & school teachers. Naruto isn't at that level yet; he's only a chunin-level in terms of physical power. The Chunin Exams didn't guarantee the winner of the fight became a chunin; it was a way to test your skills, and then the higher-ups would gauge your skills and decide if you deserved a promotion.

Okay so you probably got the answer by know, but before the Final Exam happened, the 3rd hokage said that the results of the winners/losers had no bearing to them. It was to test to see how well they are as individuals. The 3rd hokage even said that theres a chance that all, or even none were going to become chunin. Reason why they picked shikamaru, was cause he was the only one who fought and calculated his every move, and after he gave up, it was more that he gave up because he ran low on chakara and wouldnt be able to continue in the other rounds, so even he he wanted to beat temari, he ultimately with drew because he was completeley drained as she was not . Him with drawing fight, also proved to the other proctors, that Shikamaru knows when its the proper time to attack, and when not to give the enemy the advantage. In real life situations, a Chunin is indeed meant to put their lives on the line, but they most also be put in charge of making sure to protect their fellow man. Everyone else aside from shikamaru, were going all out to win, and not trying tobe conservative of their chakara, aka naruto. While neji wasnt chosen either due to letting his personal feelings affect his judgement. Temari indeed also may have been chosen as chunin given that only her and shikamaru were trying to win, while trying to think ahead. Sauske and Gaaras fight had no conclusion, but no way Gaara was gonna be promoted, and Sasuke didnt really get the chance to finish his moveset infront of everybody. Nobody else in the village knows about Sasuke and Naruto vs Gaara (shukaku).

The movie is fun. One of my top 3 favorite naruto movies. Definitely worth a watch.Like the Dragonball movies though, it takes place at a weird time interval that doesn't fit in the rest of the timeline. The filler ultimately didn't matter. In the manga, where the filler didn't happen, Sasuke was still in the hospital after Tsunade healed him. The issue with him and Naruto is that Sasuke is so used to being superior to him, and the fact that Naruto is becoming more and more competent so quickly, while he feels like he has stagnated. He's pissed at Itachi for not only the beating, but also only after being Naruto. He's also pissed at himself for not advancing as quickly as he thought he was, and he's taking it out on Naruto

From Sasuke's point of view, he can't seem to catch up to Naruto. Naruto has all these new jutsu's and abilities and on top of that, his own brother dismissed him like he was nothing and wanted Naruto over him. Killing Itachi has been Sasuke entire objective since the massacre and he was just tossed aside for Naruto and he doesn't even know why. I get that he's a little crazy, but him going all "fuck the system" is completely justified. he could have handled things better obviously, but he's at his breaking point.

Think of it as if this starts from the last non filler episode, Sasuke just got mind fucked by Itachi and was just woken up by Tsunade, the only reason the filler fight is there is to put him back in the hospital. The fillers actually make it worse cos you think Sasuke is chill and happy when hes not, not only did he get his ego checked again but he just found out that hes so weak that his brother thinks of him as nothing but a nuisance. Even worse than that his brother DOES have time for Naruto, the biggest loser of the academy and in Sasukes eyes a joke of a ninja. If Naruto is more powerful than Sasuke then that means that he will never stand a chance at beating Itachi and all his time training was a colossal waste of time.

Shikamaru was promoted to Chunin because even though he lost he showed he had a mind for strategy and that is a skill chunin need as they lead missions. The majority of Naruto's fight was shear will power which is important but that sort of mindset would lead to deaths while Shikamaru's would would save lives.

Won't even attempt to read whats already on here lol. But from my understanding those episodes are considered filler because they never happen in the manga. The only reason you're aware of it is that it shows that one flash back with Naruto making the whirlpool however the manga basically goes from Tsunade's arrival in the village to the current fight, and if you remove that filler fight it would have no bearing on Sasuke's attitude. As for the Chunin exam it is expressly stated that winning does not guarantee you become a a Chunin and it is possible for no one to become one. Combat prowess is for sure important, hence the tournament however it is ultimately an evaluation on HOW you fight and lead vs how powerfull you are. Shikamaru was promoted because they evaluated that if he were leading a team on a mission (as a Chunin should) his dicision making and methodology would ensure the completion of the mission. The same way that winning a battle is far from winning a war.

Probably already been covered, but I'm not gonna read 250 comments lol. The final tournament of the chunin exam isn't a winner gets the promotion deal. Literally everyone or no one can get the promotion to chunin as long as they make it to that stage. Naruto could have won the tournament and not been deemed worthy of the chunin rank. Basically since it was interrupted, they weren't going to promote anyone, but the people who saw Shikamaru's fight reported to Tsunade that they thought he deserved the promotion and the 3rd hokage's guard Raido obviously mentioned Sarutobi had planned on giving it to him, so she promoted him. It was stated by people watching during the exam that Naruto was impressive but he didn't really have Chunin qualities.

I remember thinking wtf did so many ppl voted u guys not to watch the movie?? Cause jumping to 107 is bound to confuse anyone (though technically yeah, u guys got the jist of it. Naruto had to come save the day again causing Sasuke to feel insecure and angry finally reaching his tipping point), but the movie was actually really good and built on that a lot. Why did Naruto not become Chunin? Winning and losing is not a determinate as to one's prospect to becoming Chunin, it's leadership skills, and one's ability to keep the squad alive while completing the mission. Remember Chunins are suppose to be squad leaders. Considering the amount of damage Naruto suffering during the fight, would any of you really trust him to keep an entire squad alive? Bluntly speaking Naruto failed that part of the exam, because the amount of effort he spent was not worth the damage on both sides in the end. Sun Tzu says "winning a hundred battles is not the height of skill, winning without fighting is". In this situation Naruto used a lot of effort while Shikamaru used very little effort to achieve "nearly" the same result and that is why Shikamaru is a Chunin and Naruto has long way to go.

As many have said before, fillers just muddy the water on what a character's motives are. What drove Sasuke to want to fight Naruto was not the fact that Naruto beat the main bad guy in the filler, heck, he had beaten Haku and Gaara before then while Sasuke laid unconscious. Itachi telling him he wasn't of his concern while also showing acknowledgement of Naruto is what made Sasuke think of not only the Leaf Village and his comrades but also about himself and how a "loser" like Naruto could be doing all those things. That drove him to want to fight Naruto and make sure he was still the top dog. I do think the right message was conveyed after the very first flashback, but that flashback is what made them question what was up. Filler should have ended ep 106 and ep 107 starting with Sasuke waking up and showing only canon material.

This scene is supposed to happen right after Tsunade returns to the village. He is pissed because all of his hard work made no difference against Itachi and he is frustrated about that. He's upset that all his efforts were meaningless while Naruto keeps getting stronger and stronger. Nothing happened in the filler that caused this.

Was I the only one getting annoyed every time they mentioned not understanding why Sasuke is so angry and wishing they saw the fillers? Not annoyed at them obviously but at the studio who decided to add the filler in between tsunade arc and this arc. In the manga it made perfect sense and actually makes this upcoming arc even more impactful that sasuke would be bitter after facing itachi and reliving the death of his clan for 24 hrs via tysumani. This is actually the first moment he’s been awake since itachi’s encounter. The people want you to rush through the series instead of actually enjoying the series.. Movie 1 and 3 have great moments 2 does as well but 1 and 3 are my favorite also never got through the entire 2nd movie till this day not bad but I just didnt for unknown reason.. The movies aren't tied into the story. They are one-offs like normal movies. However, I do recommend you watch all 3 of them before you move onto Shippuden. I'd love to see your guys' reaction. They are definitely worth the watch. Also, even though if you win fights in the Chunin exams, that doesn't mean you'll become a Chunin. In the preliminary exams, Sarutobi said that even if you become victorious in the Chunin exams, that doesn't guarantee you the rank of Chunin. The Chunin exams are to show off the abilities of the ninja. If you win, it just means you have another opportunity to prove the judges that you are worthy of becoming one. You can become Chunin even if you lose the first round. They just want to see who uses their abilities to the greatest potential mixed in with intelligence. Shikamaru won the fight but lost the match against Temari. They are two different things. He outclassed her even though he gave up. They were hesitant about giving him the promotion, due to the fact that he is lazy and they weren't sure if he was willing to put in the effort. However, Shikamaru does have the traits of a Chunin. One of them is clarity, which is one of the reasons he got promoted. Clarity is something that people like Naruto and Neji don't have at the moment.

I believe Shikamaru got promoted at that time just because of how much he controlled his fight and out smarted his opponent, which show his skills and ability to possibly lead others into battle. Although he surrendered be he claimed to be low on chakra all the higher ups took notice of the fact that if he did have more chakra how would have won, and if he would have been leading others since he controlled the fight the entire time and had his opponent playing into his traps, in a real life situation he would have taken minimal to no casualties for his mission. Conversely while Naruto won his match by any means necessary which is commendable he got totally dominated his entire fight , Which would've led to massive casualties if were to be leading troops in a real situation. A successful mission really gets damped or over looked if your whole team get wiped out or obliterated. Two of the current leaf Chunins are caught talking in the stands about this right after Shikamaru gives up in his fight.

It gets referenced once then absolutely never again. I'd rather have minor confusion over a filler that has absolutely zero importance to the story than having to wait weeks for them to finish said boring filler.

honestly don't worry about the filler; think of it this way: in the manga Sasuke has just been in hospital all this time after Itachi fucked him up, the anime just added a few more scenes in the same vein of "Naruto is advancing further than me and I'm really emo about it". I'd say watch 101 through 106 on your own, and you'll realize how useless any info given during those episodes are. Nothing from those episodes (or any filler episodes) will ever be referenced again. Shippuden fillers should be watched however.

Those episodes are not im the manga. They added them to the show to extend the season. This way season's didn't end in the middle of different arcs. Sasuke was in the hospital because of what his brother did to him. That is what happened in the manga. I dont really understand why they added those episodes because it really is confusing. Although it can also be confusing because sometimes the show will rewrote events so that the filler blends into the main story better. In this case they rewrote the story so that Sasuke left the hospital only to be messed up by another villain and be sent back to the hospital. But since that mini arc adds nothing and ends at the same exact place it started, it’s considered filler and skipable

So as I’m sure you’ve all read 100 times by this point, the filler didn’t matter. There was nothing in it that you missed. It operates the same way that episode of dragonball Z where Goku and Piccolo get their driver’s license, it essentially never really happened. In terms of the show this episode takes place right after Tsunade comes back to the village and heals Sasuke and Kakashi, that’s why he’s still in the hospital. From Sasuke’s point of view the events happened like this: Naruto showed him up when he fought Gaara, immediately followed by Itachi telling him that he was only there for Naruto and that Sasuke wasn’t worthy of facing him yet, then Sasuke was unconscious the entirety of the Tsunade retrieval arc, and now he’s awake. Filler episodes didn’t exist in that timeline, they were just added to allow the manga to get a little bit further ahead so the show would have more material to work with

For anime that was adapted from a manga the term filler refers to an original anime only episode that wasn’t written in the manga. Generally they are used to buy the manga author time to draw the manga. One anime episode can take 2-3 chapters more to fill out content of a 20 minute episode, so it easy for an anime to catch up to the manga. Filler isn’t canon to the manga, but sometimes it gets referenced in the anime. For Naruto they decided to make a filler arc in between Tsunade arc and this new one you are watching now to give Kishi (manga author) time to draw out his manga. They decided they wanted to use Sasuke and Sakura in it. In the manga after Tsunade heals Sasuke is when he butts heads with Naruto over Naruto’s sudden growth and Itachi’s complete indifference to him. If the anime followed with that it would mean Sakura and Sasuke wouldn’t be used in the filler arc. They decided to modify the story a bit by having the filler arc take place after Tsunade healed Sasuke and have Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke go on a mission again for the filler arc (which again did not happen in the manga). Since the manga had the big Sasuke confronting Naruto in the hospital the studio knew they just had to have Sasuke get seriously injured again to go back to the hospital. They had the main antagonist of that filler arc crush Sasuke badly while Naruto defeated him. This just reinforces Sasuke’s fear and frustration at Naruto’s rapid growth and his own seemingly slow growth. His fear that if he cannot even keep up with Naruto that he will never be strong enough to kill Itachi. When people say that arc was filler they mean it didn’t happen in the manga and the story can be skipped. The only issue for you guys is that since the anime studio wanted Sasuke and Sakura in it they modified the story to have Sasuke not blow up after Tsunade healed him and instead had Sasuke seem cool only to get his ass handed to him and get sent back to the hospital again and have Naruto save the day. I hope that makes sense.

The Skipped Episodes are filler. In the Manga when Sasuke has a flash back it is off him getting beaten by itachi, and Naruto dominating Gaara. He is still in the hospital after his fight with itachi.

nahid, you’re right about the first movie chronologically taking place before this episode and arc. it’s one of the main reasons i advocated passionately for you all to see it before the start of this arc because your perception of the movie will be different if you watch it after this arc. you will be looking back at a different time before this arc and it will feel like a flashback adventure. the movie predates the seeming animosity and conflict you see here between naruto and sasuke. movies 2 and 3, on the other hand, take place after this arc so they should be watched after this arc if there is interest.

i really hope you'll go back and watch the fillers on your own time, if only to judge for yourself if you consider them fillers. i have a feeling we have a similar understanding of what we consider filler. if you do not consider them filler at the end of it, then like me you see value in fillers that may not be part of the manga canon but are part of the anime canon and adds to their character and relationship developments. they often function as a conduit from one episode to the next. are there single, self-contained, and lighthearted fillers in the tone of 101 which may align more with what we consider filler? yes, and that long list comes after this arc. but 102-106 are not of that category. it is an original mini story arc with meaningful plot and fallout. people are ignoring the fact you are only watching the anime. you are not reading the manga and supplementing it with the anime, which is an entirely different experience. if you also read the manga the gap would not have felt as significant. in the manga, sasuke arrives at this hospital scene and mindset directly after meeting itachi and being healed by tsunade. in the anime, he arrives here AFTER the additional events of 102-106 as well and to understand this specific version you need to watch 102-106. in the anime it makes no narrative sense to jump from 101 to 107 and i think it is self-evident from how drastically different they are. whether manga canon and anime canon are of equal validity is a separate issue, and in my mind, a contention based on fallacy because it’s apples and oranges. but these fillers definitely have merit in my opinion.

This is literally the start of the whole plot of the show.The scene about the headband is so integral because it shows how Sasuke is starting to push away his friends and his village. 1 - Sasuke is like that because of Naruto's development, he getting stronger and defeating Gaara while Sasuke couldn't do anything AND his meeting with Itachi, that showed him he was still too weak to defeat his brother. The filler arc adds nothing to it, it's just a little fight that Sasuke loses and Naruto wins against the enemy, that's what that flashback was about. 2 - the 3rd hokage said that the final exams was not just about winning or losing, but showing your habilities and strategies during a fight, that's what Shikamaru did more than the others.

If a person were to see this episode without having read the manga, he or she would never think that Sasuke was in the hospital because of what Itachi did. Remember the rules of the Chunin exam. It was NOT a "winner takes all tournament". In the words of Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi, the tournament was just a means for the candidates to show off their skills, it was possible that they ALL could be Chunin, or NONE of them. There was no penalty to the scoring for losing the fight. Though obviously winning means advancing to the next round and getting more opportunities to impress the judges. So it makes no difference that Shino and Naruto won, but Shikamaru lost. That wasnt the criteria the candidates were being judged on. Cool headedness, strategy, and skill were. Remember Chunin are squad leaders. Iruka Sensei is a Chunin. Naruto might be stronger than Shikamaru, but he definitely doesnt have better leadership qualities. That is why Shikamaru was the ONLY candidate in this last Chunin exam to have passed. Despite losing his fight.

Hey just to clarify, those ARE fillers. They weren't written by masashi kishimoto who created the manga. They are not integral what should happen is he should still be recovering from itachi in the manga. What the studio decided to do was to create another arc to flesh out sasukes motive. They are not good at doing so since the itachi encounter + naruto gaara fight should be more than enough. The studio decided to integrate the memory of the filler into the canon episode but honestly coming from someones been a naruto fan since i was a kid, not worth.

The most “important” thing to take from the filler is Sasuke gets his ass beat for the 3rd time in a row. The thing that makes it filler is that unlike garra and itachi, the dude that gave Sasuke his 3rd strike will never be mentioned again.

The 3rd Hokage said that it doesn't really matter if you win your fight, but winning and advancing into the finals would give you more chances to show what you can do.

Yo Genin, about Shikamaru's promotion. So without any doubt...all showed exceptional combat abilities, Shikamaru on the other hand was the one who showed leadership by planning his moves carefully and knowing when to keep on fighting or retreat for his or any of his comrades safety. That is something expected from a chunin. His strategic thinking and his composure during crisis earned him the promotion to chunin rank. Apart from him...no genin really did exceptional work apart from Naruto, now although Naruto won his match against Neji, there was no strategy, no real sign of someone worthy to lead a squad...the quickest summary for both of their gameplans during that match was just brute force, who was stronger than who. Now Naruto's fight against Gaara on the otherhand was a very exceptional moment that showed a lot of growth and maturity in Naruto, yeah Naruto really wanted to pummel Gaara and kick his ass but he also wanted to rescue Gaara from any more pain he was feeling emotionally because Naruto knew all about that kinda pain since they've been through pretty much the same shit. So where as Saucesuke, Kakashi, Guy etc saw Gaara as some troublesome kid who needs to be left alone...Naruto saw him as someone who needs rescuing from that dark place. It's a very big shame no one in the village apart from Saucesuke witnessed that fight.

Itachi, the man he's been training to kill this whole time told him he aint worth it and claimed that Naruto, the runt he's supposed to be better than is more worth his time. And that's justified because Naruto took out Gaara by himself, the one Sasuke was supposed to beat. WHen the sand kids first showed up, Naruto couldn't even deal with Kankuro and Temari (or so it seemed) and Sasuke immediately saw Gaara as his rival.. yet he could do nothing against him and Naruto pulled a CRAZY summoning/transformation jutsu while Sasuke got bodied. Remember how desperately he wanted to beat Garra? he went through all that with the curse mark, (and he probably considers the fact that he has it a failure, especially because he was frozen scared against Orochi and Naruto had to save him) just to get his fight cut short in the exams, and went after him so hard during the attack on the village just to lose and then get slapped around by his bro. He's had his pride attacked all types of ways.

Honestly, Shikamaru is the only who showed the skills of a Chunnin...a Chunnin can be a battle commander, which mean he is responsible of other shinobi...fighting skills are important, but not the desired characteristic in a Chunnin. In the manga Naruto leaves w Jiraiya to find Tsunade to heal Sasuke, Kakashi, and Rock Lee after being attacked by the Akatsuki. Sasuke stays in the hospital from his fight w Itachi and all he does while he recovers is reflect on how Itachi only wanted Naruto and wasn’t interested in him. He also couldn’t get over the fact that Naruto was able to not only compete w Gaara but also beat him while he almost died. His anger is coming from him feeling inferior, or as Suraj put it, he realized he was a secondary character and that the show wasn’t named after him lolol the fillers were cool and you should watch them on the side but ultimately they don’t need to be watched to understand why he’s so upset.

The reason Shikamaru became a Chunin is because he impressed the judges and spectators the most with his planning and how he incorporated his jutsu. Within the Chunin Exams, you can win but if you don’t impress with your abilities, you’d could still remain a genin. Moving up in the tournament is just more chances to validate yourself and to the 3rd Hokage and other judges, that’s what Shikamaru did over people like Naruto, Neji, Temari or Shino.

Because in regards to the Anime, it was the final catalyst to Sasukes mental degredation to this point. We literally see him watch naruto throughout the entire filler do things, that he never even thought was possible yet, and get more and more jealous to the final climactic fight where he felt worthless, while Naruto looked unstoppable. It connects directly to this. In the manga, Sasuke was only having flashbacks about the entire Itachi ordeal. And he was still in the hospital for that. For continuity reasons, the anime strewn in a flashback to the filler arc.

when you get to shippuden please think about watching 3 episodes pr. week since there are 306 canon episodes and it will take almost 3 years to finish it if you just watch 2 episodes pr. week please think about :)
