More on the foreshadowing of the Sawyer leadership thing. Back in season 1, Sawyer tells Kate something along the lines of “Give me some bandages and a couple of aspirins, and I’ll be running this rock” and she gives him the are you fucking kidding me face and says “You’re actually comparing yourself to Jack”? and almost most people in the audience at that point agree with her. Like how absurd it is to compare the heroic doctor to the bigoted redneck that we’ve seen at that point. Sawyer’s next line is overlooked and foreshadows this scene in season 5. He says that Jack and him aren’t so different and given a different life/circumstance, those two could be in opposite situations, and he was right! Jack grew up in a “nice” family with a father that pushed him to be his best (in unhealthy ways, but still) while Sawyer’s dad fucked him up to the point that Sawyer still has nightmares seeing how his dad shot himself right there above his bed after shooting his mom that was screaming for her life. Sawyer had to grow up on the street and fend for himself. He had it rough and grow up with the every man for himself mentality. Right now though, he did get that different life and got to live that alternate timeline he mentioned to Kate. He built a life for himself and did in fact start running the island and calling the shots. He became that hot heroic leader everyone admired while Jack was at the bottom of the pecking order. I love the writing of this show sometimes and his scene with Jack at the end there so much. It’s so human and realistic and makes perfect sense with the characters. Sawyer grew up so much and was cool as fuck this whole episode, but the moment he was alone with Jack and had a moment to rub it in, all gloves were off. The way those two were talking it was pure dick measuring and primal alpha male stuff, mainly Sawyer. He went from LaFluer to the wounded animal he has been this whole time and took it out on Jack the first chance he got. He was always looked at as scum and everyone found it absurd that he’d ever be as good of a man/leader/lover as Jack was. He was always in the shadow of the genius (like Ben made Locke feel), and he showed how high he could fly when people looked up to him. But when that genius came back, Sawyer went right back to that little boy who always knew what he could do if life was kinder to him, and took it all out on Jack whom always personified to Sawyer what he could have been if he had the life Jack had. Spoilers ahead, but we see more of this in the season 6 side flashes. I always liked to think those were fun little snapshots of where each character would be in life if island/Jacob didn’t have an influence on their life. And in Sawyer’s case, Jacob never gave him the pen to write that letter and he never grow up with the hate and revenge motives he had as a kid, and instead of the criminal he grew up to be the hero/cop. He was LaFluer (literally his undercover nickname) that everyone once again respected and admired. He was still lonely and had to deal with his own issues, but a Jacobless islandless life was kinder to him and once again he was that hero he knew he could be. He was LaFluer and not the immoral conman that everyone hated.

Consider the quality of character work and dialogue still occurring here in this serialised series - Game of Thrones’ series runtime equals the time of LOST’s season 4 finale when Jack and Locke discuss lying to save the island. No source material, greater runtime, and didn’t have two years to prepare in advance either. The difference in writing quality is mind boggling

Re: revealing things - absolutely fine to tell them things that have already occurred in the series. You know the big things coming up so therefore know what things to keep quiet about (or not risk accidentally clueing them in on). We trust - we’re just scared that they’ll work things out ahead of time!

Man this show is so damn good. LOVE Sawyers speech to Jack. And then knowing what is coming that speech means so much more. I remember being pissed at Sawyer when I first watched the show at this point. Jack didn't have the luxury of having 3 years of a calm life to understand how things worked so that he COULD think and make a plan. He had to react, because no one knew what the hell was going on. AH! Love this show!!!!!

This season does a great job exploring one theory of time travel. As Faraday said, whatever happened happened. That's basically the theme of the season. The rest of this season is going to be darn interesting. :)
