For me the blurred photo is helping more with base colors in some areas. I think I can see the shapes through the detail but not as much see how the colored hairs in different areas mix to produce an overall color...if that makes sense. Like the purpley bit in the forelock which is quite obvious in the blurred photo and not in the sharp photo. So did you do the blur in photoshop?
