Things to check before you start a new piece

Sometimes I’m sent lots of photos and they’re all pretty similar so it’s a good idea to just double check you’re using the one that was agreed. I started a new piece on Thursday and created the outline from the wrong photo!!
Next thing is to check over your paper for any scratches or anomalies that might cause issues. This is especially important with pastelmat. I now go over the entire surface with a fine tooth comb checking for scratches or quality issues. It’s well worth the 5 minutes 😊
Spend a little time just looking at your reference and becoming familiar with it. I like to use visualisation so I have an image in my head as to what I want the finished piece to be like - this has really helped me with my work even if it doesn’t look exactly like my initial vision, I still have a goal to work towards 😊
