Chapter 91 - Parenting Issues

“Egon do you and Victini want a tour of my… ahem! The gym’s breeding facilities?”

“Miss Madeline…” “Vi…” “That’s…

“It’s nothing like you are imagining! Being a Pokémon breeder is more akin to being a matchmaker. We just introduce potential sweethearts to each other giving them the opportunity to feel out the other. Sometimes it’s love at first sight, other times one or both need to prove their valor in battle. It all depends on the species and the couple’s individual quirks.”

“Yes! We currently have an Ursaring mother who is very much in love. The prospective dad knowing he didn’t stand a chance in battle against one of our star battlers sought out my personal help. One pot of Combee honey and a heartfelt confession later and now him and his trainer still often come by the gym to let the couple have some alone time.”

“There are many different kinds of love, although it is usually the male Pokémon who has to prove himself a capable mate. It is always so exciting to see what grand romantic gesture a boy Pokémon comes up with to prove his mettle.”

“Well, it is always best to broaden my horizons as a trainer. What do you think Tini?”

“Vi… Vi.” “I’ll come along… but no more propositioning pervert woman.”

“And what about you Mr. Briney?”

“You two young’uns go on ahead this sailor has already been. Maddy, do let that old coot Nelson know that I’ve arrived. Don’t want him getting spooked by the sight of strange people in his gym.”

Just like that both Victini and myself followed Madeline’s beckoning hand as she led us further along into the gym. The building’s layout was quite similar to that of the Lavaridge gym, leading me to come to the conclusion that both gyms were designed by the same architect. As we passed a long hallway Madeline stopped at the second to last chamber, opened the electronic gate with a stylized keycard and the three of us entered together.

The first thing I noticed was that this room was designed like a large open spaced jungle styled paludarium. Perfectly suited to any normal types adapted to living in forested areas although by my estimations this space was designed specifically to cater to the slakoth and kecleon line. At first glance I couldn’t spot any of them near the entrance, but I was sure there’d be at least a handful of Pokémon further in.

“This entire facility is two point four seven acres. Our main efforts are directed towards the gym’s Pokémon, but I am allowed to have my own little side projects.”

“Side projects? Like what?”

“Like this; Po!!”

“Spindaaa!”

Appearing out of the nearest patch of tall grass came a bipedal pear green Panda Pokémon. The swirling patterns around its eyes and ears were quite distinctive and I could tell immediately that this was no ordinary Spinda. Po the Spinda while pointedly ignoring me walked up to its trainer in a drunken fashion almost falling over after each step. When the spotted shiny panda Pokémon reached its trainer it got picked up in a loving embrace.

‘An off-color variant? Those are a rare find. This is the first time I’ve seen one other than Orin.’

“Egon, Victini I want you to meet my longtime friend and starter Po. We’ve been together since..”

“Vi!!! Vi!” “YOU!! This guy is dangerous, Egon don’t directly look at him!

“Spindaa…?”

“Vi!” “Stop acting innocent!

Madeline was quick to step in to protect her Pokémon from Victini’s somewhat justified scrutiny.

“Spinda was just looking after my safety, Victini. At the time we didn't know who or what was watching us. The only way Spinda even knew you were there was because of the smell.”

“Vi? Vi?!” “Smell? So now you are saying I stink?!

To prevent this argument from devolving any further I jumped into the air, grabbed my floating friend and turned around causing Victini to be facing away from the innocuous looking Spinda.

“Vi! Vi!” “Let me at ‘em! I’ll show him not to mess with me!

To get Victini out of this berserker state I had to resort to my secret weapon only to be used in times of great crisis.

‘You forced me into this!’

“Fwooooooo!”

That tickles, stop it!!

I’ve found that blowing air into Victini’s sensitive ears was a surefire way to distract her long enough to prevent the fire rabbit from going on a tantrum. Victini’s so-called episodes usually consisted of stealing food and binge eating until said individual admitted wrongdoing. Since the gym’s food stocks weren’t mine, I quite literally couldn’t afford her going on a rampage.

“Will you calm down?” ‘I just came back from doing groceries. There’s fresh Custap berries in my backpack. They’re yours if you allow me to go on this guided tour without bothering our hosts.’

“Vi! Vi!” “Hmpff! I’ll let them off the hook this time!

With that final resolution given, Victini used her psychic powers to open up the zipper at the top of my backpack before slipping inside. The sound of her struggling to open my tupperware containers continued in the background as I eagerly examined Madeline’s little troublemaker.

Upon closer inspection it became apparent that this particular Spinda had the infamous broken heart pattern. This particular color pattern had become somewhat of an urban legend on the Hoenn trainer forums. There it was said that those trainers who attract the attention of this particular variety of Spinda would experience a distinct lack of suitors often ending up as spinsters and hermits.

“Miss Madeline, is there a special someone in your life?”

Not being able to suppress my curiosity I asked the pertinent question. In my eleven years of living in this strange new world I’ve often found that superstitions weren’t entirely unjustified, especially so in the case of ghost stories. However, it seemed that Madeline was quite aware of the rumors floating around on the trainer forums.

“Not you too! For the record I have a bunch of special someone's in my life, thank you very much! My parents, Grandpa, all of my wonderful Pokémon friends.”

Of course, that two faced Spinda drives off all the girl’s potential mates!

Ignoring Victini’s comment and not wanting to put the woman through even more distress I opted to quickly change topics. Even in my last life no one appreciated a busybody going through the details of one’s own love life.

“So… Spinda here has a bunch of kids running around?”

“Yes! He’s a very popular Pokémon in the community. Every other breeder hopes that his unique coloring passes on to his children. Which has never happened, but we can still hope. Let us continue the tour!”

As we walked Madeline pointed out the various Pokémon kept within the facility. We saw other Spinda, Slakoth and Vigoroth of various sizes and a mated pair of Girafarig tending to the needs of a newborn calf but I was truly astounded to come across one of the most endangered species of Pokémon in the world. There sitting in the shade of a large berry tree stood a large brown and cream colored bipedal marsupial Pokémon.

“Kanggaa!”

“Wow! You even managed to capture a Kangaskhan? How did you convince the Kantonian association Miss Madeline?”

“We are part of a very exclusive breeding project. This one here is on loan from the Kantonian Safari Zone. Once the little one she’s currently taking care of has reached its final stage of development they are to be sent back to Kanto.”

“Vi?” “Where is the baby?

Victini, who had her fill of berries became intrigued enough over the course of the tour to come back out of the backpack. She still kept her distance from Madeline and Spinda but that didn’t keep her from enjoying the sights of parent Pokémon tending to their children.

“Inside her belly pouch, sleeping most likely.”

“That is correct Egon. You must already be quite familiar with the species.”

I had no qualms about sharing the knowledge I had acquired over years of studying at the Lavaridge Town trainer’s school. Sensing Victini’s growing curiosity I orated out loud what little I knew of this particular branch of normal type Pokémon.

“Kangaskhan is an all-female species of Pokémon who are famous for keeping their young inside their belly pouches. Their population is always under threat because each mother will only rear a single child at a time and their offspring takes a full three years to become fully independent.”

“Vi Vi?” “That’s why they are endangered?

“It is a contributing factor but not the only one I believe.”

Madeline stepped in to fill the gaps of my knowledge.

“It isn’t. The reason why Kangaskhan are so endangered is because of their aggressive inclinations. The fact that most Kangaskhan are perpetually with child means that all possible threats in their near vicinity are attacked without prejudice. These Pokémon would only stay their paws once their targets have proven themselves harmless. That’s why it is better if the both of you keep your distance from this one just in case.”

The Kangaskhan who had just now noticed us was giving me the evil eye so I wisely decided to slowly move backwards holding up my hands to let her know I wasn’t a threat with Spinda and Madeline doing much the same.

“You are her caretaker, right?”

“…We have come to a mutual understanding.” “Spiiiin…”

The only one in our little group who had no fear at all was a certain fire typed gremlin.

“Viii! Vi!”

“Kanga?!”

“Vi!”

Victini was doing the Pokémon equivalent of asking a friend’s mom if their child could come out to play. Strangely enough the mother Kangaskhan seemed very receptive to this kind of approach seeing as she hadn’t started mauling Victini yet. Perhaps my partner’s earnestness combined with her harmless appearance had put the Parent Pokémon at ease.

Following their exchange of words Kangaskhan proceeded to softly scratch her abdomen which was followed by the appearance of her progeny sticking its head out to see what was going on. In sharp contrast to its mother her baby’s skin was a smooth light purple and it sported stunning onyx eyes with stark white pupils.  The baby Kangaskhan’s cuteness was only rivaled by Victini’s own, even I was tempted to pet it and would have done so if not for the presence of her overprotective mother.

“Eeee!”

Quite unlike its mother this little one had a difficult time articulating properly trying its very best to communicate with only chirps and grunts.  However, both Victini and its mother seemed to perfectly understand what the child was trying to convey. After a short exchange Victini had seemingly come to a decision closing in on Kangaskhan. Before I had a chance to tell her off, my trusted partner wormed herself into the Parent Pokémon’s belly pouch, becoming a neighbor to the child Kangaskhan.

“Vi………!” “This is sooo comfy!

“Tini!? We are so sorry ma’am! I’ll tell her off please don’t take offense.”

“Vi! Vi!” “Silly Egon! I’ve been invited for a playdate!

“…Wait is this true?”

“Kanga.”

Mrs. Kangaskhan told me all about how she’s worried that there are no other Pokémon for her daughter to play with over here. Something about the other parents not trusting their children to be around her? Anyway, I’ll be back for dinner so don’t wait around for me!

With that the mother Kangaskhan turned around and walked off into the shrubbery carrying Victini to a place unknown..

Both me and Madeline exchanged glances and I gave her an exasperated sigh.

“Sorry for the trouble, Victini's very willful.”

“It's okay. Working with all kinds of Pokémon is basically in a breeder’s job description. Would you like to get some refreshments in the breakroom? You seem more like the type that enjoys hearing about the job’s finer details”

“That sounds lovely, Miss Madeline.”

POV - Zinnia

Today was the day she was finally allowed to go back and visit Lavaridge Town! Grandpa and Grandma must have been worried sick about her since she wasn’t given much of a chance to say goodbye at all. The only things she was allowed to bring along were her toothbrush and two sets of clothes. This time she will make sure to bring back all her plushies and a bag of Grandma’s cookies to share with everyone. There was only one thing missing that would’ve made this the best trip ever.

“Daddy won’t come with us?”

“Zinnia dear, your father is a very busy man. It takes a lot of effort to run for an elder council position and put food on the table.”

“Big sis can take a day off whenever she wants! It’s unfair!”

“Sssssshh sweetling. We’ll have plenty of fun with just the three of us. You can introduce me to all your little friends, and we’ll go out for lunch afterwards.”

“Yes! All my school friends will be so jealous that I already have the three bestest Pokémon friends in the whole world while they still have to wait for theirs.”

“Gon!” “Goo!” “Sea! Sea!”

“Big sis Aster sure is late. What’s keeping her so long?”

‘Aster promised to come pick us up at seven o’clock on the dot. That she could be running late must mean that she’s busy with something really important!’

Lately Aster had been coming to our morning lessons in a grumpy mood. The clan’s offshoot members in Kalos had been requested to buy up as many Jaw fossils as they could possibly find. But their current family head decided to cut all ties and had given up much of the old traditions even foregoing training dragon types all together. Left to their own devices Aster, Grandma and the others were kept busy scouring Hoenn and its neighboring regions for snobby private fossil collectors.

In order to find more of these nerdy collectors, the grumps on the council allowed me to leave the village for an entire day but in exchange I had to bring back my birthday present packaging for something called a return address.

“Preeee!”

A loud familiar cry resounded above the airspace of our family garden. Dragonair slowly descended and proceeded to nestle atop the comfy looking rock overlooking our newly dug pond. Its rider jumped off scooping me in a big old hug.

“Little sister! Are you excited to go see all your little friends back in Lavaridge Town?”

“Mm-hmm, what are you wearing big sis?”

“We Draconids tend to stand out while wearing our formal attire. This time I thought to go a bit more low key something any regular girl would wear. Are the two of you ready to go?”

“Yes! But Mommy is pretty big. Will there be enough room for the three of us on Dragonair?”

“Don’t you worry! Just for this occasion I decided to ask an old friend for help. Come on out Garchomp!”

Awkwardly screwing open her outdated poké ball a big blue female Garchomp materialized in front of us. The reason that I know about this one being a girl was because her beautiful seamless backfin. Something I learned about in my homeschooling sessions with my big sister.

“She’s so pretty! Can I touch your scales please?”

“Gaaaar.”

Garchomp didn’t seem to mind freely offering me her right arm but before I could do so I was given a stern warning by Aster.

“Careful! This Garchomp’s ability is called Rough Skin. Just a casual stroke of the hand could cause you to bleed all over.”

Now a bit more careful I testily poked at the pretty girl dragon’s scales.

“Uwaah! Her scales are like sandpaper! Is it safe for us to ride on Garchomp?”

“It is for me since I’ve had a saddle specially made for her. The two of you can ride on Dragonair. You do remember how to, right little sister?”

“Yes! Hold on tight and give her lots of kisses and treats before, during and afterwards.”

“Preee!!”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Around two hours later*

Mommy showed off her dragon riding skills while regaling Aster and me on how daddy used to be such a romantic that he’d take her out during moonlit nights on Noivern. Grossing me out with the image of mommy and daddy’s kissy faced endings.

“Are we there yet?”

“No darling.”

“…How about now?”

“No.” “No.” “Gaaaar!”

“Sorry Garchomp! I’ll behave, promise!”

‘Garchomp gets scary when I ask too many questions. Flygon are the best after all.’

“Big sis how come you never bring Garchomp to our morning lessons?”

“Zinnia, I have a bunch of Pokémon friends you’ve never seen around before. However, Garchomp’s case is a bit special. Just this year she’s had a beautiful nest of the three cutest little Gible. Two of them still live with her in the nesting grounds while the other has chosen to accompany one of this year’s initiates. You remember Nicolas, right? Both of you had your very first battle together.”

“The meanie!”

“He’s mellowed out since that day. Being responsible for taking care of Gible has really brought out his tender side. Garchomp here makes frequent home visits just to make sure Gible is doing okay, and she’s had no complaints so far. Isn’t that right?”

 “Gaaar.”

“Hmpff! As long as he knows that me and my Pokémon are unbeatable, we’ll have no problems. …Can I meet all of your other Pokémon friends big sis?”

“Of course! I don’t train them as much anymore since the council keeps me busy most of the time, but all of them have homes in Meteor Falls.”

“Let’s play a game! I guess what kinds of Pokémon friends you have and the loser is a dweeb.”

“Alright, just to let you know I have six Pokémon friends. Dragonair and Garchomp are your two freebies and no asking your mom for hints. Five wrong guesses and you’re out.”

“Okay! Hmmm… The clan doesn’t have any dragon types from Unova, Galar, Alola or Paldea. So… Salamence, Goodra, Noivern, and Altaria?”

“Two of those are correct. Salamence is the boy of our little group and Noivern only comes out at night past your bedtime when she feels most comfortable.”

“Huh? Then how come I haven’t seen Salamence yet?”

“Salamence keeps getting into territorial fights with other members of his species. He’s afraid to let up for even a single second. Salamence leaving means that another could swoop in and take over his bachelor patch in his absence.”

“That’s lame! Do boy dragons become dumber as they evolve?”

“Well… maybe a little bit dumber. You have three guesses left.”

‘There are only a few Pokémon species left over. Think! What other Dragon types live in Kalos and Hoenn…’

“Kingdra, Flygon or… Dragalge?”

“Those are great guesses little sister! Yes, I do indeed have a Dragalge, but she doesn’t live anywhere near the village. We’ll have to go out to the western seaboard if you want to do a meet and greet.”

“Why doesn’t she live here in the river?”

“She’s been wanting to start a family of her own, but she can’t do that inside the village there’s too much contested space. She’s already found a suitable mate and now we are just waiting for the good news.”

“Big brother says it’s illegal to introduce foreign Pokémon into the environment!”

“Hmm… technically yes. But! All her children will be welcome to join us once they’ve hatched. The council has already agreed to begin digging out a new canal. This way the tribe’s water dwelling Pokémon don’t all have to be clammed up into a single river. Now remember, you only have a single guess left.”

“That’s all the dragon types there are! Unless… Latios? No no Latias! Because girls are cooler.”

“Oh, I’d wish! I’ve never gotten the chance to meet one of the Eon Pokémon. My final actual partner is Charizard, the last boy Pokémon on my team.”

“You captured a Charizard?! My brother would be SOOO jealous!”

“Charizards do rank pretty high up there in the average boy trainer’s dream team composition. Charizard is my youngest caught while I was visiting Johto for clan business. Knowing that I was in the vicinity I paid a visit to one of our associates who was visiting the Charicific Valley at the time. One thing led to another, and I found myself with a feisty Charmeleon.”

“That’s it! Charizard must be your mega evolution partner! Grandma told me all about the different Mega Stones the village members have found over the years.”

“Such a smart cookie you are. Most villagers aren’t lucky enough to come across a single one but I had a secret strategy for maximizing my chances.”

“Tell me pleaase!”

“Walking.”

“Are you playing a trick on me?”

“Many of the villagers make the mistake of having their partners fly them in between towns. Not experiencing the full breath of nature the traditional way. Mega Stones are buried underground and are consequently found and kept by wild Pokémon living in the area. What would one’s chances be of encountering said mega stones if they never put boots on the ground and explore like a proper trainer should?”

Mommy answered this one.

“Zero percent chance.”

“Indeed, when our tribe members go out, they don’t do it as rookie trainers but with a set of fully evolved Pokémon. Dragons, especially those that can fly, trivialize the whole experience. That’s why I’ve been fighting to get our trainers out there at younger ages.”

“That means… I can go out earlier?!”

“Perhaps, coupled with your parents’ permission and someone trustworthy to look after you. You like Dray well enough, right?”

“Noibat’s cute and cuddly and I won’t mind traveling with another nerd like my brother.”

Soon enough the mountains made way for hills which made way for another mountain. Anyone in Hoenn could recognize the silhouette of Mt. Chimney at first glance. Lavaridge Town was the only human settlement situated so close to Hoenn’s only active Volcano. There in its shadow lay our hometown.

‘Grandpa, Grandma, Mrs. Patterson, Nurse Mary and everybody else… Time for the big shot trainer Zinnia to make her grand reappearance!’

It was at this moment while we were cresting over the Fiery Path canyon that I knew we had come back home.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grandparents’ store*

“GRANDMA!! GRANDPA!!”

“Our little treasure!” “Zinnia welcome home!”

Rushing up to my grandparents, I gave both of them one of my special occasion hugs reserved only for birthdays and graduation parties. They felt warm just like how I remembered being them even though I hadn’t seen them for over half a year. After finishing my special hugging session Aster and Mommy sheepishly followed me into the family cookie store.

“I have my own dragon type Pokémon now Grandma! They’re all so cute!”

“That’s very nice dearie. We all know how much you wanted more Pokémon of your own even after Egon caught you that Horsea. Just make sure to love them all equally as much.”

“I know that!! Stop saying embarrassing things Grandma!”

The store’s customers, Aster, Mommy and even my grandparents themselves couldn’t stop themselves from laughing at my brief bout of awkwardness.

‘Traitors! I’ll show them what for!’

“There’s so much that has happened since you’ve left little plumb. Did you know that your brother has already earned himself seven badges? He is this close to qualifying himself for this year’s conference.”

“That Nerd! He better earn his eighth badge right away!”

“We are very proud of him. He's already doing much better than his mother, isn’t that right Willow?”

Mommy seemed to be properly cowed by Grandma’s harsh admonishment. The handful of customers inside the store only just now seemed to recognize their fellow townie.

“Willow is that you?” “Where did you run off to?” “We haven’t seen you in ages!”

‘Good! All embarrassment should be shared equally!’

“That’s enough lollygagging. We are closing the store for the remainder of the day. Shoo! Shoo!”

To emphasize her point Grandma got out her trusty broom and started sweeping out every loiterer who stuck around just to watch our family moment play out.

“Grandma, why? We need customers, right?”

“It doesn’t take that long to buy my confections. Believe Grandma when she says that those people only stick around for the next juicy gossip. How about you introduce your new friends to Grandma and Grandpa?”

“Umu! This is Aster. She's been taking very good care of me!”

Big sister stepped up and gave both my grandparents a small bow, an old fashioned custom that makes elderly people feel more comfortable. Grandma and Grandpa reciprocated with a small bow of their own.

“It is an honor to meet Zinnia’s maternal grandparents. Thank you for taking care of her all this time. The two of you did a splendid job raising her.”

“Fufufu, what a polite young lass. Thank you for picking up Willow’s slack, that girl has always had an irrational fear of long-term commitments.”

‘Long-term commitments?’ “Grandma, what are you talking about?”

“Don’t you worry about that Zinnia dear. Why don’t you go out to the kitchen and show Grandpa all of your new friends while I have myself a little talk with our two guests.”

“I want to stay for the grown-up talk! Stop treating me like a little kid!”

“You can have all the leftover cookie dough, freshly made this morning.”

“From the large mixing bowl?”

“Yes, do make sure you don’t spoil your appetite. Grandma is making lunch and dinner especially for you today.”

“Okay!” ‘I never get to lick the bowl all by myself!’

Grabbing Grandpa’s arm, I pulled him along into the back kitchen where Grandma bakes deliciousness into cookie forms. Once inside I couldn’t help but get excited at the sight of the unattended mixing bowl.

“I want to eat it all, but! Sharing is caring, at least that is what my brother always says so… Come on out everyone!”

Unlike normal trainers I couldn’t just flick open all of my poké balls at once. The lame balls containing Bagon and Goomy could only be opened by screwing loose the cranks that held their lids together.

“That brings me back… It has been a while since I’ve seen a trainer use those kinds of poké balls. Back when I was a child my father’s old Slugma had a ball just like the ones you are using right now.”

“Stop looking at me like that Grandpa! It’s embarrassing! You better buy me a bunch of normal poké balls for my birthday!”

Fighting through this embarrassing moment I managed to finally open up both balls which was quickly followed by me activating the release mechanism for all three capture devices.

“Gon!” “Gooo!” “Sea!”

“Everyone, this is Grandpa! Make sure to play with him lots because he holds the domain over our house’s cookie jar.”

Horsea had already gotten to know the rest of my family and was just lazily lounging in my arms but the other two stepped up to introduce themselves properly just like I taught them. Bagon pulled on grandpa’s old man trousers after hearing about his hidden stash of treats while Goomy started chewing on his sandals in a show of appreciation.

“Aaah! You must be Zinnia’s new friends. Thank you for looking after her all this time while we couldn’t. With two big strong dragons looking after her our family can feel more at ease.”

Grandpa’s words caused Bagon to puff up with pride while Goomy started nibbling on grandpa’s exposed toes with even more fervor.

“Quit that Goomy! You can only slime people after they’ve given consent, we talked about this!”

The commotion my Pokémon were causing was enough to wake up the kitchen’s other occupant who had gone unnoticed until now.

“Shu Luckle?”

The weird new ornamental rock with holes and corks stuffed into it suddenly came alive as a silly looking face emerged out of one of the free holes to be witness to the commotion.

“Grandpa you caught a new Pokémon?! And it’s cute looking too!”

“Hoho! Shuckle isn’t mine, he belongs with your Grandma. Egon remembered her talking about wanting a Shuckle to help with store operations and as soon as the chance arose he caught this one to send back home. Your Grandma is coming up with all sorts of new recipes using the fermented Berry Juice out of Shuckle’s shell.”

“Hello there little guy. It is nice meeting a new family member.”

“Shuck!”

Extending my finger I gently poked its exposed body. Shuckle returned the favor using its appendages to get a feel of my hand.

“Shuckle’s so wriggly… and wet?”

“We keep Shuckle supplied with berries, it's not called the mould Pokémon for nothing little treasure.”

“Mould? Isn’t that the bad stuff growing on food that’s been left in the trash?”

“Shuckle mould isn’t dangerous for either people or Pokémon. In fact, it has antibacterial properties and is a staple ingredient for all sorts of traditional medicine.”

“Does Shuckle like to eat cookie dough as well?”

“No can-do sweetheart Shuckle here is on a strict diet. Feeding him that cookie dough will have your grandma up in arms and me sleeping on the living room couch.”

“Phew… more leftovers for us.”

Bagon, having grown impatient, somehow managed to climb on top of the kitchen counters. Sticking his head right into the bowl filled with sugary goodness. Quickly before the little guy could make any headway in devouring the dough I snatched away the container.

“Gon!”

“No! Bad! You’ll get a share too so just wait for a bit, alright?”

‘I wonder… what Grandma, Mommy and Aster are talking about?’
