Data & Magic Chapter 111: Aftermath and Anxiety
Added 2025-05-16 11:31:08 +0000 UTCConsciousness didn't return, it almost seemed like it rebooted. Like a corrupted system file being painstakingly reassembled after a catastrophic power surge, fragments of awareness flickered online. After he had blacked out, he only had a vague recollection of a few things, Rynarion carrying him back to the main group, Julia, Roland and Jett rushing towards him after seeing his serious injuries, and someone helping him on horseback likely helping him to get back to Lumenar for treatment. Everything else was a mental blank, which is scary for someone so accustomed to seeing all the data.
The first coherent input wasn't sight or sound, but smell, sharp, clean, vaguely floral medicinal herbs overlaying the faint, sterile smell of antiseptic. Location signature consistent with medical facility, a sluggish part of William’s mind registered. Infirmary? Healer's ward?
Then came sensation, a global system alert of profound, grinding aches. Every muscle fibre screamed protest, a deep, resonant soreness that felt less like fatigue and more like having been used as a stress-test dummy for a bunch of crazy goblins… oh wait, yeah that did happen... Breathing was a conscious effort, each inhale pulling against bruised ribs, each exhale a low groan. A dull, persistent throb pulsed behind his eyes, the familiar signature of EMMA protesting a forced shutdown and critical resource depletion. System Status: Online (previously offline for significant period). Hardware Integrity: Multiple minor failures detected, significant musculoskeletal strain. Software Integrity (EMMA): Recovering from overload, residual latency expected. Pain Levels: Exceeding comfortable operating parameters.
He forced leaden eyelids open. The world swam into focus through a grey, fuzzy filter. Muted morning light slanted through a high, narrow window, illuminating parts of the room with a column of light. He was lying on a narrow cot, covered by surprisingly soft, warm furs. The room was small, spartan, walls of smooth, pale wood seamlessly joined, the ceiling high and subtly vaulted in the elegant elven style. Functional, clean, yet possessing an understated artistry even in its simplicity. Definitely not Averian field medicine.
He needed a proper diagnostic. Ignoring the body's vehement protests, he focused inward, pushing a trickle of his slowly recovering mana into EMMA. System boot sequence initiated... please wait... MP: 69/165. Initiate full bio-scan. Compare current state to last log entry pre-unconsciousness.
The internal display flickered, still sluggish, overlaying his vision. Bio-scan running... Comparing data... He braced himself for the damage report. The memory of the impacts – the spear glancing off his side, the axe slamming into his shoulder, the sword slicing his cheek – was vivid, visceral. He remembered the pain, the feeling of systems failing...
Scan Complete. Analysis:
Minor Lacerations/Abrasions (Canopy Descent): Healing initiated. Estimated time to full resolution: ~24-48 hours.
Clavicle Trauma (Spear Attack and Landing Impact): Residual bruising detected. Structural integrity: Nominal. No fracture detected. Estimated time to full resolution: ~5-7 days.
Internal Bruising (Axe Impact): Significant reduction observed. Cellular regeneration active. Estimated time to full resolution: ~5-7 days.
Facial Laceration (Sword Strike): Epidermal layer sealed. Minimal scarring projected. Estimated time to full resolution: ~24-48 hours.
Current HP: 72/200.
William stared at the EMMA readout, disbelief warring with the undeniable data. Seventy-two HP? After those hits? After blacking out? He was certain his HP had been a lot lower after the fall and three attacks from the goblins, but whatever magical regeneration ability he had, was already working on full swing to help him. The cuts from the branches were starting to close, the brutal impacts reduced to deep aches rather than crippling injuries. The gash on his cheek, which should have required stitches and left a significant scar, was apparently sealing itself. Anomaly Re-Confirmed: Enhanced Healing/Regeneration protocols operating significantly above baseline AND previously observed 'Complete Restoration' parameters. He thought back to the [At the Brink of Death and Back] title. Effect: Enhanced healing and regeneration will activate at brink of death. It seemed 'brink of death' wasn't hyperbole. The system had registered his kamikaze jump and subsequent impacts from the goblin attacks as a trigger event, kicking his inexplicable recovery into overdrive. Mechanism: Still unknown. Implications: Potentially life-saving, also deeply disturbing. Need more data. Preferably data acquired through less life-threatening means.
Just as he processed the bizarre healing metrics, a cascade of new notifications erupted across his internal display, demanding attention like overdue system alerts after a long downtime.

New Title Awarded: [Travel like Tarzan]! Effect: +5 Agility.

New Title Awarded: [Nemesis of Goblins]! Effect: +15% damage and effectiveness of tactics against goblins. NOTE: Goblins exhibit increased aggro towards user.
William stared at the flood of information, momentarily forgetting his aches. Twenty-six thousand XP? Two level ups? Six stat points? The sheer scale of the reward for what felt like a suicidal gamble followed by near-certain death was staggering. Apparently, the system heavily weights towards high-risk for high rewards. Not necessarily my preferred approach… Aren’t LitRPG supposed to be about the slow and steady grind?
The titles, however, brought a wry grimace. [Travel like Tarzan]? Seriously, EMMA? My 'canopy traversal' involved more flailing and being carried than graceful swinging. And +5 Agility now? Would have been marginally more useful before nearly plummeting eighty feet. He sighed internally. [Trusted Strategist Despite the Strange Tactics]? That +25% acceptance chance might actually be useful, given my tendency towards statistically improbable solutions. But the last one... [Nemesis of Goblins]? +15% effectiveness is good, but increased aggro? Fantastic. Just painted a giant 'Attack Me First' sign on my back for every goblin in existence. I didn't even technically kill any this time! Just blinded them before the elves did the wet work! System attribution logic requires refinement. Is there a complain to admin button for me to support a report?
He pushed himself carefully into a sitting position, swinging his legs over the side of the cot, ignoring the body's chorus of complaints. He needed to assess the real situation. He was alone. The room, though clean and smelling of herbs, was unfamiliar. Minimalist elven design, smooth wood, woven hangings depicting serene forest scenes, no clutter. Functional. But where were the others? Where was his gear?
His eyes scanned the room. A small table held vials and clean bandages. Another held a basin of water. And on a third, neatly folded, lay... his +2 Wyvern armour and the under-tunic he'd worn. Cleaned. Repaired where branches had torn the leather.
His blood ran cold.
He looked down at himself. He wasn't wearing his own travel-stained clothes. He was dressed in a simple, soft, loose-fitting tunic of undyed linen. Someone had stripped him. Someone had cleaned his wounds. Someone had dressed him.
Someone had seen his chest.
Did they see it? The thought slammed into him with the force of the goblin axe blow. The Ice Dragon Crystal. Embedded above his heart, pulsing with its soft blue light. An artifact of immense power, fused to his very being. With the exception of his companions, no one in Lumenar knew about the Ice Dragon Crystal, not even Lily who caught him with Snowy earlier.
Who treated me? Elara? Another elven healer? Did they notice? Did they recognize it? Report it? Panic, cold and suffocating, clawed at his throat. His mind raced, EMMA struggling to keep up, running frantic probability scenarios based on zero concrete data. Probability of Crystal Detection: High (if healer was thorough). Probability of Recognition: Unknown (depends on healer's knowledge/affiliation). Probability of Report to Council/Syltharil: Unknown, potentially high depending on reporter.
Where was Snowy? He'd asked Caspian to guard her, but where was Caspian now? Where were Roland, Julia, Jett? Had they been separated? Questioned? Was Lily involved? Had her fascination turned into something else once she realized the potential power he carried, literally, within him? Her failure to visit as promised yesterday suddenly felt less like a simple oversight and more like a potential warning sign. Did she report me? Was her friendliness a facade?
Fear, sharp and acidic, churned in his gut. He felt trapped, exposed. His secrets, EMMA, the Crystal, his impossible regeneration, felt like fatal vulnerabilities in this ancient, perceptive city. If Syltharil knew... if the isolationist faction learned of a human bonded to a draconic artifact... the consequences could be catastrophic. Not just for him, but for the entire team, for the mission, maybe even for Snowy herself. Risk Assessment Update: Personal security compromised. Potential exposure of critical assets (EMMA, Crystal, Snowy). Threat Level: Escalated to Critical.
A million frantic questions swirled, offering no comfort, only amplifying the dread. He needed information. He needed his team. He needed to know what the elves knew. He pushed himself fully upright, ignoring the wave of dizziness, his gaze darting towards the closed door. He had to find out what was going on.
Just as he swung his legs fully off the cot, preparing to stand on shaky limbs, the door opened silently.
William froze, every muscle tensing, heart pounding, bracing himself.
Standing in the doorway was an elf he didn't recognize. Tall, serene, clad in the simple grey robes often associated with scholars or healers in Lumenar, their face calm, ancient, and utterly unreadable. Emerald eyes, holding the weight of centuries, met William's across the small room.
The elf offered a slight, polite inclination of their head. Their voice, when they spoke, was soft, melodic, carrying no discernible emotion.
“Ah, you are awake. Good. Your recovery is… noted. There are… questions.
