Data & Magic Chapter 87: At the Gates of Lumenar
Added 2025-05-16 11:11:56 +0000 UTCThey walked on in silence for a time after that, processing the heavy political context Rynarion had provided. William felt Snowy shift in his backpack. < Talking lots, > she observed sleepily. < Words sound… sharp sometimes. Like ice cracking. >
< You have no idea, little one, > William thought back. Office politics, elven style. He focused EMMA outwards again, running passive scans, trying to learn more about this place while conserving mana. MP: 135/165. The ambient magic grew stronger, clearer, the air itself humming with latent energy. The forest floor became smoother, the trees taller, straighter, their silver bark gleaming softly. He noted strange, glowing fungi and flowers emitting faint light, illuminating the path as twilight deepened under the canopy. Environment Analysis: Mana saturation increasing. Ecosystem appears highly managed, symbiotic relationship between flora and ambient magic? Warding signatures becoming more complex, layered.
After another hour of brisk travel, a different elf materialized silently from the trees ahead, almost colliding with Jett who stopped instantly. This elf wore similar dappled armour and with the same black armband. He bowed respectfully to Rynarion and spoke rapidly in flowing Elvish, gesturing back the way the party had come. William focused EMMA. Attempting linguistic analysis based on cadence, intonation, comparison to Rynarion's previous speech... Pattern recognized: Report/Update structure. Key phonemes correlate with 'goblin', 'track', 'south', 'river'.
Rynarion listened intently, asked a sharp question, received a brief reply, then dismissed the scout with a nod. The scout vanished back into the woods as silently as he'd appeared.
Rynarion turned to the group, his face impassive. “A report from the border patrols monitoring Tallenwood,” he stated calmly. “Our fears regarding pursuit seem unfounded for now. Your passage through Hammer Falls appears to have been successful in disrupting immediate chase. Goblin activity is confirmed concentrating further north and west, consistent with your assessment of their main southern thrust bypassing Sharwood.” He paused. “However, patrols do report significant, organized goblin forces establishing fortified positions deep within the southern forest, closer to our border than previously known. Their southern advance continues, albeit perhaps slower than anticipated.”
Relief warred with continued unease. No immediate pursuit, good. Large army still heading their way, bad. Threat Assessment Update: Immediate pursuit risk low. Strategic threat (Goblin Army southern advance) confirmed, timeline uncertain. Roland met Jett's eyes, a silent acknowledgment passing between the two warriors – the tactical situation remained critical.
They pressed on. Gradually, the nature of the forest changed again. The wild density gave way to more ordered groves. William began to glimpse structures through the trees, not crude human buildings, but elegant shapes that seemed to grow organically from the forest itself. Graceful, impossibly slender bridges woven from living wood arched between massive trees far overhead. Soft, warm light emanated from within dwellings nestled high amongst the branches, platforms built seamlessly onto colossal trunks. The air hummed more intensely now, filled not just with magic, but with a sense of deep, ancient peace.
Then, as the sun truly began to set, casting long, ethereal shadows, they emerged from the trees into a vast, open space, the outskirts of Lumenar.
William stopped, breathless, genuinely stunned into silence for perhaps the first time since arriving in this world. He'd anticipated treehouses, maybe elaborate wooden forts. The reality defied his imagination, exceeding any fantasy trope.
Majestic structures soared towards the twilight sky, crafted from materials he couldn't readily identify, polished white wood that seemed to glow faintly, smooth grey stone that flowed like liquid, interspersed with panels of what looked like actual crystal, refracting the ambient light into soft rainbows. These weren't built among the trees. They were integrated with colossal, ancient trees whose silver trunks formed the living pillars and core structures. Walls flowed organically between these natural supports, carved with exquisite, flowing patterns of leaves, vines, and stars. Living, flowering vines draped gracefully over balconies woven from white branches. Gentle ramps spiralled up massive trunks, leading to unseen levels above. Soft, sourceless lights glowed within windows and along pathways made of the same smooth, flowing grey stone.
Two structures dominated the breathtaking cityscape, visible even from the outskirts. Farther in, a cluster of impossibly tall, slender crystalline spires pierced the canopy, catching the last rays of sunlight like fingers of frozen fire, the Royal Palace, seat of King Arionthar, William guessed. Closer, and broader, stood a complex of interconnected domes and gracefully arched halls built around and within several titanic, ancient trees, radiating an aura of quiet contemplation and immense knowledge, undoubtedly the Great Library and seat of the Elder Council. Architectural Analysis: Symbiotic Integration of Masterwork Craftsmanship and Controlled Natural Growth. Power Source: Ambient Mana Field / Integrated Magical Conduits? Aesthetics: Off the charts. Structural Integrity: Presumably high due to magic. William felt like a caveman looking at a fusion reactor.
Elves moved along the pathways below and the bridges above, their forms silhouettes of impossible grace against the glowing structures. They were numerous, yet the city felt calm, serene, utterly untouched by the war raging beyond its hidden borders. Some glanced towards the newly arrived human party and their Warden escort with cool, detached curiosity, but none approached, none showed hostility. Just… assessment. Like antibodies identifying a foreign particle, deciding if it's benign.
“Impressive,” Roland murmured beside William, his usual demeanour momentarily cracked by sheer awe. Julia just stared, her eyes wide, likely feeling the incredible density of controlled magic saturating the very air. Caspian looked like he might spontaneously combust from sheer academic ecstasy.
“Stay here,” Rynarion instructed firmly, halting them just outside the main convergence of pathways leading into the city proper. His voice pulled them back from their wonder. “Do not enter Lumenar uninvited.”
He explained, his tone serious. “As I said, few outsiders have walked these paths in centuries. None have entered the city proper without formal sanction in living memory. Your unannounced appearance, especially as humans,” the distinction was clear, “would cause… significant disruption. Fear in some, unhealthy curiosity in others. It would prejudice the Council before you even speak.” He looked pointedly at William's backpack, where Snowy was thankfully still quiet. “We must adhere to protocol. Respect the ways.”
Roland nodded curtly. “We understand, Warden. We await your summons.”
Caspian, despite his eagerness, bowed agreement. “Of course. We came uninvited. We will abide by your customs.”
Rynarion gave a single, satisfied nod. “Your understanding is appreciated. It will serve you well.” He looked them over one last time, his emerald gaze lingering again, unreadably, on William. “I will petition the King and the High Council immediately, conveying the urgency of your message as presented. Wait here. My guards,” he gestured to the two silent elves who took up positions nearby, alert but unobtrusive, “will remain. Do not stray.”
With that, Warden Rynarion turned and strode swiftly and silently down one of the glowing pathways towards the great central trees, disappearing into the heart of the mystical city.
The four companions were left standing awkwardly at the threshold, enveloped by the palpable magic and unnerving serenity of Lumenar, waiting for judgment from powers ancient and unknown. William activated EMMA again, focusing on the ambient mana field. MP: 138/165. Analyzing ambient field... Density: Extremely High. Structure: Complex, stable, multi-layered harmonic resonance detected. Possible functions: Environmental regulation, large-scale warding, energy source...?
As William checked the details in EMMA, the familiar notifications flashed again.
XP Gain Detected: +3000 XP (Successfully made first contact with Elves + Successfully arrived at Lumenar).
Total XP: 3000 / 10000.
New Title Awarded: [First Contact with the Elusive Elves]!
Effect: +5% mana regeneration rate.
The experience points for meeting the elves and arriving at Lumenar seem a little low, especially when compared with the effort it has taken. But experience points is experience points. The title is nice, and every little bit of mana regeneration will help with powering and improving EMMA, so let’s take it as a win.
The sheer power humming in the air was intoxicating, exhilarating, and terrifying all at once. He felt the crystal in his chest pulse faintly in response. Now what? he thought. Wait for the Elders to finish their thousand-year tea break? The fate of Aver rested on persuading beings who might view their entire kingdom as a fleeting distraction. The waiting, again, began.
