Data & Magic Chapter 80: Bonding and Resolve

The Ice Dragon Crystal lay in William’s palm, pulsing with a soft, internal blue light and radiating a gentle, inexplicable warmth. It was undeniably beautiful, a perfect star-shaped anomaly retrieved from the heart of lethal, magical cold. Around the small, carefully tended fire, the rest of the team stared at it, caught between awe, exhaustion, and a hefty dose of apprehension.

“Magnificent,” Caspian breathed, already sketching furiously in his notebook, resisting the urge to snatch it for closer examination. “The crystalline structure appears flawless, yet the energy signature... Julia, what do you sense?”

Julia, propped against a log near the fire, still pale and weak from her mana backlash but conscious and alert, frowned slightly, concentrating. “Power,” she murmured, her voice thin. “Substantial, stable... and ancient. Elemental Ice, yes, but with... something deeper. A life force signature? Faint, but present. Like an echo.”

Snowy, nestled back in the sling on William's chest after nervously observing the initial post-rescue commotion, projected a thought filled with reverence and sadness. < Mother's Heart. Her final gift. Her memory. >

Roland shifted, his practical gaze fixed on the crystal. “A pretty stone, yes. But what is it? What does it do? Is it safe?” His scepticism remained, grounded in the harsh reality that mysterious magical artifacts often came with dangerous price tags.

Jett remained silent, watchful, his expression unreadable, though his gaze kept flicking between the crystal and Snowy.

< It is… memory. It is… warmth in the cold, > Snowy projected towards William, trying to explain the inexplicable. < It helped me survive after… after She was gone. It pulsed when you were near. It… belongs with you now. > She nudged his hand gently with her snout. < You retrieved it. You faced the cold. It is yours. Keep it safe. >

William looked down at the crystal, then at Snowy's earnest blue eyes. The responsibility felt immense. This wasn't just some magical trinket. It was the remnant of Snowy's mother, potentially a source of great power, possibly the very reason Neverus's forces were in Tallenwood. And Snowy, its rightful heir perhaps, was entrusting it to him. He felt a strange pull from the crystal itself, a faint resonance humming against his skin, almost like EMMA's standby mode but infinitely older, more organic. Hesitantly, driven by Snowy's insistence and that inexplicable pull, he closed his fingers around the smooth, star-shaped object.

The moment his skin made full contact, the world exploded.

Not with sound, but with light and pure, overwhelming energy. A surge, raw and untamed, erupted from the crystal, flooding William's senses. It wasn't painful, not exactly, but staggeringly intense, like mainlining pure data, like touching a live power line carrying arcane secrets. Blinding white-blue light flared from his closed fist, obliterating the firelight, throwing the clearing into stark, impossible brilliance, shadows vanishing instantly.

WARNING! WARNING! UNIDENTIFIED HIGH-ENERGY MAGICAL EVENT DETECTED! SOURCE: CRYSTAL/USER INTERFACE! ANALYZING SIGNATURE... WAVEFORM UNKNOWN... ENERGY TYPE: UNCLASSIFIED (ELEMENTAL ICE / LIFEFORCE / ???). SENSORS OVERLOADED! CRITICAL ERROR! ATTEMPTING TO ISOLATE… EMMA’s internal alerts shrieked before dissolving into digital static as the energy surge overwhelmed its delicate sensors.

William gasped, feeling the energy pour into him, not just around him. It raced along his nerves, saturated his bones, resonated with something deep within his core he hadn't known existed. He felt… connected. Expanded. Terrified. Exhilarated.

The others cried out, shielding their eyes, stumbling back from the sheer intensity of the light. “William!” Julia cried, trying to push herself up. Roland instinctively raised his shield arm. Jett drew his bow, aiming towards the light source, seeking a target in the blinding glare. Caspian dropped his notebook, babbling about “uncontrolled mana fusion events.”

Then, as abruptly as it began, the light imploded inwards, vanishing. Darkness rushed back into the clearing, leaving spots dancing in everyone's vision. The intense feeling of energy surrounding William subsided, leaving behind a profound silence broken only by panicked gasps and the crackle of the fire.

William stood trembling, hand still outstretched, eyes wide, trying to process the sensory overload. His hand was empty. The crystal was gone.

“Shard! Are you alright? What happened? Where's the crystal?” Roland demanded, moving forward cautiously, sword half-drawn.

William looked down at his empty hand, then slowly, guided by a strange new warmth pulsing rhythmically in his chest, he looked down at himself. He fumbled with the clasp of his (+2) Wyvern armour, pulling aside the leather and his tunic beneath.

There, embedded seamlessly in the skin just above his heart, lay the star-shaped crystal. It was no longer a separate object. It glowed softly, a gentle blue light visible even through his tunic layers, pulsing in time with his own heartbeat. The skin around it wasn't broken or burned, it looked… integrated. As if the crystal had phased into him, becoming part of his very being. He tentatively touched the smooth, slightly raised surface. It felt warm now, deeply, fundamentally part of him.

EMMA? Status? he thought, hoping his internal system had rebooted. …System recovering from high-energy event, the familiar mental text scrolled, slightly fuzzy. Internal bio-scan running… Anomaly detected: Foreign object (crystalline structure, draconic energy signature - high) integrated with user thoracic cavity, region sternum/heart. No immediate signs of tissue rejection or physical trauma. User mana levels… Recalculating… MP: 85 / 161. Significant mana restoration detected post-event. Source: Unknown (External Absorption?). Long-term physiological effects: Unknown. Recommend detailed medical analysis… unavailable.

So, the bonding gave him mana? Or stabilized his reserves somehow? Interesting. And definitely not covered by standard Earth workplace insurance, William thought with a touch of hysteria.

His companions stared, utterly speechless, mouths agape, their expressions a mixture of profound shock, disbelief, and burgeoning fear.

< Safe now, > Snowy chirped contentedly from the sling, apparently unfazed by the light show, projecting a feeling of rightness. < Belongs there. Mother's Heart protects. >

“What… what in the name of all the gods… just happened?” Jett finally managed, lowering his bow slowly, his eyes never leaving the soft blue glow beneath William's tunic.

William shook his head, trying to find his voice. “I… I don't know,” he admitted hoarsely. “I was holding it… Snowy gave it to me… then the light… and now it's… here.” He touched the crystal again through his tunic. It felt… strangely right.

“Bonded!” Caspian breathed, recovering his academic composure first, though his eyes were wide with manic excitement. “A symbiotic bonding! Or perhaps parasitic? No, the energy felt… reciprocal! Unprecedented! A draconic artifact of immense power integrating directly with a human host! The magical conductivity implications alone! Does it hurt? Can you feel it affecting your own mana flow? Does it respond to conscious thought? We need detailed observations!” He looked ready to demand William remove his armour for immediate study.

Just then, Julia, who became awake from the commotion and had been watching silently from her bedroll with wide, worried eyes, finally found her voice. She pushed herself up, ignoring Caspian’s attempt to help her rest, and stumbled over to William, her gaze fixed on the glowing crystal. The blue tinge on her own lips had faded slightly, but she still looked incredibly weak.

“William!” she exclaimed, her voice thick with relief but sharp with admonishment. She reached out, gently touching his arm, reassuring herself he was solid. “Are you truly alright? That… that light… the power… And your dive! You were unconscious for nearly a day! You nearly died!” Her relief warred with residual fear and anger. “That stunt with the Light spell, the dive into that freezing abyss… It was reckless! Foolish!”

She took a shaky breath, trying to regain control. Her voice softened, filled with genuine concern. “I'm… I am so profoundly glad you are okay. Truly. But,” her eyes pleaded with him, “please, William. Be more careful. This mission… we need you. Whole.”

William felt a fresh wave of guilt mixed with warmth at her raw emotion. “I'm sorry, Julia,” he said sincerely, meeting her worried gaze. “I’m truly sorry for frightening you. It… seemed necessary at the time. The crystal felt important.” He managed a weak, self-deprecating smile. “And perhaps you should take your own advice about caution? Pushing yourself past your limits for the shield… mana backlash is dangerous, remember?”

A faint smile touched Julia's lips, chasing some of the weariness from her eyes. “I suppose,” she admitted softly, “I deserved that.” She looked again at the crystal glowing softly beneath his tunic, her expression unreadable now, a mix of wonder, worry, and perhaps professional curiosity.

Roland stepped forward, interrupting the moment, his face stern but his eyes holding a grudging respect mixed with deep concern. “Alright. Enough,” he commanded gruffly. “Shard seems… functional, despite integrating potentially explosive draconic heart.” Excellent bedside manner, Roland. “Julia, you are clearly still recovering from severe mana exhaustion. William, you've been unconscious for a day and just underwent… that.” He waved a hand towards William's chest. “Jett's report confirms the immediate area is clear, but we remain vulnerable.”

He made the decision. “We pushed ourselves too hard. We rest here. Properly. For the remainder of today and tonight. We allow Julia and William to recover fully. We consolidate our supplies. We depart at dawn, day after tomorrow.” He fixed William with a look. “And you, Shard, will spend that time resting and trying not to spontaneously combust or attract any more mythical creatures.”

The order was met with silent nods of agreement and relief. They needed this. Time to recover physically, time to process the impossible events, time to prepare for the next leg of a journey that had just become infinitely stranger and potentially far more dangerous. William settled back carefully onto his furs, Snowy purring mentally from the sling, the faint blue glow of the crystal a steady, warm presence against his heart.

With the commotion subsided now and everyone taking a well earned break. William decided to run a full diagnostic with EMMA to see whether he could find out more about his glowing and somewhat blinking second heart.

The notifications flashed again on his internal EMMA display.

XP Gain Detected: +5000 XP (Absorbed Ice Dragon Crystal - Partially).

Total XP: 7000 / 7000.

Threshold Exceeded! LEVEL UP! User Level 6 Achieved.

XP Reset: 0 / 10000.

New Title Awarded: [Owner of a Dragon’s Source]!

Effect: +20% mana regeneration rate. Additional abilities detected but error! Unable to process! Error being isolated to avoid harming user!

Unallocated Stat Points Available: 6 + 3 = 9.

Wow, another level! That is two levels in a day, I guess “Fortune favours the brave”. But the effect from the new title is worrying. Error? Isolated? Harming User? Sounds like some malware has been installed and Bitdefender is working hard to quarantine it… Either I’ve integrated with something way overpowered and my body can’t handle it so EMMA is protecting me from it, or I’ve been cursed. Guess we’ll roll the dice and find out. An ancient dragon's legacy, now inexplicably part of him. System integration complete? he wondered. Or just beginning?
