Data & Magic Chapter 79: Surprising Recovery and Revelation
Added 2025-05-12 12:21:26 +0000 UTCConsciousness returned not as a gentle dawn, but like fragmented data packets slowly reassembling after a catastrophic system crash. The first input was smell, sharp woodsmoke, damp earth, the metallic tang of drying blood (whose?), overlaid with the faint, clean scent of pine. Then sound, the steady crackle of fire, hushed voices nearby, the distant murmur of the river, blessedly calmer now. Finally, sensation, a profound, bone-deep cold that felt lodged in his marrow, coupled with a universal, grinding ache in every muscle, and a dull, throbbing pressure behind his eyes.
He forced leaden eyelids open. Blurred shapes swam into focus, the flickering orange light of a small campfire, the rough texture of furs piled beneath and over him, the dark, interwoven branches of the Tallenwood canopy far above. Fragmented memories surfaced. Crushing darkness, icy water flooding his lungs, the feeling of failing, falling… then absolute nothing. System log corrupt? He’d blacked out. He shouldn't be here. He should be…
Alive. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. He was breathing, shallow, ragged breaths, perhaps, but breathing. He could feel his heart beating, a slow, heavy thud against his ribs. He could feel the comforting, solid warmth of Snowy curled tightly against his side under the furs, her small body radiating a steady heat.
He attempted a quick self-assessment, bracing for the expected agony. The deep muscle exhaustion was profound, yes. The head-splitting ache from mana depletion/backlash persisted. The unnatural cold felt subcutaneous, deep within him. But the searing pain in his lungs from inhaled water? Gone. The agonizing, burning numbness of near frostbite in his hands and feet? Replaced by a dull ache and stiffness, but definite sensation. He flexed his fingers cautiously inside the furs, they responded, clumsy but functional. He mentally reviewed the minor cuts and scrapes he'd received during the dive and landing... and felt... nothing specific.
This requires immediate verification. With immense effort, he pushed aside the heavy furs covering his arm, peering at the skin in the dim firelight. The nasty scrape from the boat landing, the smaller cuts from brushing against ice… gone. Utterly vanished. Just like after the trial. Not healed, not scarred, restored.
Anomaly confirmed. Unexplained Complete Restoration (UCR) Protocol apparently active post-critical trauma (hypoxia, extreme hypothermia, multiple minor lacerations/contusions). He activated EMMA, pushing through the system's own sluggish reboot sequence. MP: 15 / 161. Reserves critically low. Passive regeneration active. Query: Access recent bio-logs. Compare current physiological state to last readings pre-blackout.
The internal display flickered, sluggish. Analysing... Comparison Complete. Confirmation: Zero residual pulmonary edema from water inhalation. Cellular damage in extremities (Stage 1-2 Frostbite markers detected pre-blackout) currently reads as... negligible? Anomalous regeneration rate exceeds previously recorded parameters (Regen Log v0.2) by additional ~50%. Internal trauma markers associated with hypoxia: Erased. Mechanism: Still unknown. Causal factors: Still unknown. EMMA seemed almost… confused by the data. This isn't just 'Limited Regeneration' anymore, William thought, stunned. This is closer to a full system restore from a backup image. What backup image?! And why?! The mystery of his own body deepened, becoming more alarming than comforting.
Just as he pondered over the mysterious healing, another familiar notification flashed urgently on his internal EMMA display, overriding everything else.

Stat Increase Applied: Strength 15 -> 18, Vitality 17 -> 20
Max HP Recalculated: 170 -> 200.
Max Mana Recalculated: 161 -> 165 (improved due to recovery from mana backlash threshold)
Unallocated Stat Points Available: 3 + 3 = 6.
Level Up, a welcome surprise. And two new titles, with one that looks ominously like flirting with death. The subtle but immediate changes due to the passive stat boosts took place, William felt some of the intense muscle pains easing off (+3 strength) and his exhaustion clearly lifting a touch (+3 Vitality), his resilience just that little bit better now. The research about near-death experiences being powerful catalysts for growth looks to be true. The upgrades are substantial this time, almost like moving to a next generation console. But I really prefer not to go through “clinical death” each time, slow and steady for the win… he noted wryly to himself. And six unallocated stat points now, best to continue saving them up for a rainy day.
His gaze shifted across the small campfire. And found Julia.
She lay on a similar makeshift bed of furs, just a few feet away. Asleep, her face worryingly pale and drawn in the firelight, her breathing shallow. The faint, unnatural bluish tinge still clung to her lips and beneath her fingernails, a stark visual indicator of severe mana backlash. Guilt slammed into William, sharp and visceral, eclipsing his own aches and existential confusion.
He remembered the shield flickering, failing. He remembered knowing she was pushing past her absolute limit, burning her own reserves, potentially damaging herself permanently, just to give him those few extra, critical seconds. He had known the risks to her. He had relied on her absolute commitment. And she had paid the price. User action directly contributed to critical resource depletion and potential long-term damage in allied asset 'Julia'. Responsibility logged: High. He owed her everything. Again. The debt felt insurmountable. He desperately wanted to check on her, but weakness held him fast.
< Awake! Good! > Snowy stirred beside him, lifting her head, blinking her large blue eyes. She nuzzled his cheek, a surprising warmth against his cold skin. < You were… very cold. Like winter stone. Long sleep. >
William focused, projecting weak thoughts back. < Snowy… Alive… thanks to you. And Julia… > His mental gaze drifted back to the sleeping mage. < She… is hurt? Because of me? >
< She is… tired, > Snowy replied, sensing his distress. < Been sleeping. Loud One > (Roland?) < said sleep is good for her magic ache. > Snowy nudged him again. < You were cold, too. I pushed! Then rope came! Humans pulled! You flew from water! > Her recollection was childlike, focused on the action, but confirmed her vital role.
< You… you secured the rope to me? > William asked, needing to confirm the fragmented memory from the original chapter draft.
< Grabbed rope! > Snowy confirmed proudly. < Made loop! Humans pulled hard! You were heavy! Very wet! >
< Thank you, Snowy, > William projected, profound gratitude washing over him. < You saved my life. >
< You saved mine first, > she replied simply, curling closer. < Warm now. >
Footsteps approached the fire. Roland appeared first, his face etched with fatigue but alert, followed by Jett and a visibly relieved Caspian.
“William!” Roland’s voice was rough, but relief resonated beneath the gruffness. “Gods be praised. You're awake.” He knelt beside the furs, Jett and Caspian crowding near. “You gave us one hell of a fright, lad. When we pulled you out…”
“How long?” William rasped, his throat dry.
“Nearly a full day,” Jett answered quietly, his usual impassivity softened by concern. “You were… gone, William. No breath, no pulse. Skin like ice.”
Roland nodded grimly. “I feared the worst. Started compressions, but…” He glanced towards Snowy, curled on William's chest. “This little one… she wouldn't leave you. Kept nudging you, projecting… something. Then, after maybe a minute, you gasped.”
“We got you warm, wrapped you up,” Caspian added, his voice still shaky. “Julia collapsed right after the shield failed. Mana backlash. She woke briefly earlier, asked about you, but Roland ordered her to rest. She pushed herself far too hard.” The prince looked guiltily towards the sleeping mage.
William closed his eyes, absorbing the harrowing account. Unconscious, no pulse, saved by Snowy’s intervention and perhaps his own bizarre regeneration kicking in after being warmed. The debt grew heavier.
“Thank you,” he whispered, looking at each of them. “All of you. And Snowy.”
He took a slow, ragged breath, then fumbled at the pouch still secured at his belt, ignoring the protest of bruised muscles. His numb fingers found the smooth, multi-faceted shape within. With effort, he drew it out.
The Ice Dragon Crystal.
Even in the dim firelight, it pulsed with a soft, internal blue luminescence, seeming to absorb and refract the flickering orange glow. It felt faintly warm in his hand now, the star-like points surprisingly smooth.
A collective intake of breath from the others. Roland stared, wary. Jett’s eyes narrowed, assessing. Caspian gasped, academic fervour instantly reignited, pushing past his fear.
“Incredible!” Caspian breathed, leaning closer, eyes devouring the object. “Is it truly crystalline? What are its refractive properties? Does it feel cold now, or did Snowy speak true? The energy signature… Julia sensed it earlier, faintly! William?” He was already reaching for his notebook again.
“Easy, Your Highness,” Roland cautioned, though his own eyes were fixed on the softly glowing crystal.
“It's… warm,” William confirmed, turning it in his hand. “Snowy was right. Doesn't feel like the source of the cold at all now.” He held it out slightly. “I retrieved it. Just before…” He didn't need to finish.
They fell silent again, contemplating the strange artifact, the remnant of Snowy's mother, retrieved at such cost. What power did it hold? Why was it preserved? And why did it feel warm now? The questions piled up, another layer of profound mystery added to their already perilous quest. The only certainty was that they possessed something unique, potentially powerful, and utterly unknown.
