MEETING KAORI, THE VIOLIN COMPETITION AND KOUSEI'S TROUBLED PAST! Kousei is famous for being a talented pianist and taking part in the piano competition a few years prior to the present events. However, in the flashback, a young Kousei panics whilst playing the piano in front of the audience in the piano competition and since then, Kousei has not played the piano for fun. In the present, Kousei listens to music to write down the musical notes on paper until a ball charges at him breaking the glass and wounding him. His friend Tsubaki accidentally threw it and nags him for not taking better care of himself when trying to pick up the broken glass pieces of the window. Later, Tsubaki asks Kousei who he likes and he grimly says there's no one and there's also noone who would like him and Tsubaki says that when you like someone, you see bright colours around them. However, Kousei sees everything in monotone colours and reminisces his past of his dying mother constantly ordering him to play the piano to become a famous pianist like she was to fulfill her dream, even to the point of physical abuse. In the present, Kousei finds a blonde girl called Kaori playing the Melodica beautifully near some cherry blossom trees. He instantly develops a crush on her as she plays it with three little kids who play their own musical instruments. He decides to film them only for her to think he's a pervert when her short dress blows upwards. She scolds him and punches him in the face despite him insisting it's just an accident. They then, meet Tsubaki and Watari and Kousei finds out that Kaori is romantically interested in Watari instead in fact, many of the schoolgirls like Watari. Kousei finds out that Kaori is in fact a violinist and is running late for the violin competition so the quartet run to Towa Hall which is holding the competition.
Kaori manages to make it in time and the others watch the first few competitors play the same piece of music that they all must play correctly. They start finding it boring as it was the same music being played over and over again until Kaori came on stage. At first, Kaori played the assigned piece of music beautifully but played her own piece of music afterwards that showed more character and sounded more epic. The audience were amazed by her unorthodox musical style but Mr. Kazama who is one of the judges got furious upon seeing her ruin a piece of classical music. After this first round, Kaori manages to get through to the second round to the quartet's joy. Kaori and Kousei eat at a desserts place where Kaori enjoys a caramel waffle and Kousei enjoys watching her eat. She then makes Kousei play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the piano for two little girls despite him saying no initially. Afterwards, Kousei informs Kaori that he stopped playing the piano because he couldn't hear his own playing to which she finds is just an excuse. She asks him if he can be her accompanist for the second round of the violin competition. He rejects the offer making her beat him up. On the following day, Kaori chases after Kousei in a bid to make him agree but he manages to hide from her. However, Kaori managed to litter his notebook, locker and music rooms with the sheet music that they must practise with for the competition. Kousei still continues to reject her and on the day of the competition, Kousei eats his lunch at the roof. Kaori looks for him instead of being at the competition and scolds him. However, despite her previous abusive attempts at trying to make him agree, she instead bows asking him nicely if he can be her accompanist. Kousei finally agrees wishing to overcome his own fear and limitation.
