- Well, one thing stays consistent for Ae-sun: her extended family can't stand her for no goddamn reason. - „Why do I need her permission? She's not the boss of me!“ Idk, I feel like the ACTUAL MOTHER OF THE CHILD should have a say in what the child does, especially at such a young age. - I had my reservations about Min-ok earlier but she's not so bad. - Seriously, is that family capable of doing ANYTHING but complaining? - It's a difficult thing. You want to give your child the world but you can barely afford to feed and clothe her. I don't blame Ae-sun for becoming more cynical with age. - Thank you Gwan-sik for standing up for your wife and child. That family is absolutely horrible. - I could tell you endless stories about the relationship between my mum and my grandma. I'll just say this: they're pretty much on a no-contact basis right now and it's not my mum's fault, that much is certain. - Damn, I wish someone would just pay 3 months of my rent for me too - Gwan-sik, my dude, take it easy. Injuries and infections like that are no joke. I get that you want to feed your family but you won't be able to do it for much longer if you keep this up. - Samyang has camera lenses? I just know them as the company that produces Buldak. (upon a quick Google search, I found out that it's two entirely different companies. Samyang Optics and Samyang Foods. They're not related) - Wait, THAT fucker is the captain? I said it! Major domestic abuser vibes. The bruises on his wife's face speak for themselves. Good that Ae-sun didn't marry him but goddamn, I feel terrible for the poor soul that did. - Damn, even his other fishermen were already calling him Shit-gil. - Broken heart syndrome is real. That's pretty much how my dad went. His last wife, the one that was finally perfect for him (third time's the charm and all that), passed from breast cancer seven years ago. And my dad, who was in pretty good physical health, especially for his age, followed less than five years later.

I mean, I get why one gets upset at certain characters, but I must admit, that what I find most endearing, is how real the characters in the show feel, taking the historical and cultural context into account. I don't think any of the characters are inherently bad, just that those were very different times and people had way different expectations. The side characters themselves are mostly conditioned to their own circumstances and what they know, like.. well.. like in real life. The acting is really really great..

I really love this episode because it shows what kind of special relationship Aesun and Gwanshik have and how uncommon it was at the time they were living in. They both saw each other as equal in their marriage and genuinely loved each other, which is rare. That scene when Aesun runs and goes ballistic at anyone who dares to lay a finger on Gwangshik is also my favourite from this ep.
