I like the Japanese live action of Death Note. But mostly no. I don’t hate the season 1 One Piece one Netflix did but it’s not on par with the anime at all and I have low hopes for season 2. The Bleach live action was horrifying.

- Oohh, Jinwoo's shadow on the ground, hinting at the imposing figure he's become.
- Jinwoo just breaks all limits of the assessment machine.
- S-Rank. Nice. I mean, it was obvious but it's still nice to see it confirmed.
- I.N's name is Jeong-in 정인, while this guy is called Jong-in 종인. Which is also the legal name of Kai btw.
- „Even death won't save you from me“ Holy hell, that line is metal as fuck.
- Jinwoo, behave yourself. Go at it with the boss for too long and you'll be found out.
- Well, so much for that. He's probably still gonna end up fighting that boss, just wait.
- Damn. All Hunters stink. Only the GAMER smells good. Further proof that this show is pure fiction 😂
- Yup, Orcs from World of Warcraft. Just dyed red here.
- Jinwoo motherfucker, DO SOMETHING.
- did... did he... just rip out the orc's spine? 😨
- Oh my god, this team is actually fully prepared to die in here. This got super dark really fast.
- This is getting real. A proper orc civilisation.
- People being tortured and killed for entertainment. Now where have I seen that before...
- Glitches. I'm seeing evidence that this whole world might be a video game and the code is starting to break down.
- I've said this before but man, these fight scenes really tickle my monkey brain :D
- It's really lucky that all these big story beats are done in three episodes. Kinda perfect for how we're watching this show. We're never left on a huge cliffhanger we need to wait a week on to resolve.
- I've seen neither the anime nor the Netflix show but from everything I've heard, the live action adaptation of One Piece seems to be really good. I also heard decent things about the live action Cowboy Bebop.
That said, I wouldn't want Solo Leveling adapted to live action. The fight scenes are so over the top, so full of crazy magic, it's absolutely MADE for animation. Sometimes animation just is the better medium for a story.
Just like I couldn't imagine the story of Xenoblade Chronicles being told in any medium that isn't a video game. At most Xenoblade X, with its vastly different structure from the main trilogy, could make for a good episodic anime. But not by just retelling the game's story but rather telling new stories in that setting on planet Mira.
Yes, I'm yapping about Xenoblade again, I'm sorry. I'm just very obsessed 😅
But that being said, every medium has its strenghts that suit certain types of stories. My favourite sci-fi book series is The Three-Body Problem. The Netflix adaptation is not bad. Probably as good as it can be in that medium. But this series is so highly speculative, filled with all sorts of ideas, concepts and philosophy. Depicting mind-warping scenes that I actually had a really hard time visualising in my head because it's just so out there, so beyond anything that can really be put to the screen in a visual medium. This series is MADE to be in the printed novel format.
I also find the way the plot moves forward in the novels quite a bit more interesting than the Netflix show. But I understand why they had to change it. Because the book has also been adapted by Tencent in China. And they stuck WAY closer to the source material, literally recreating scenes 1:1. For one scene I actually took out my copy of the book and just read along with it. It was IDENTICAL. But that also revealed some of the shortcomings of the TV show to me. While it's really interesting to read, the show can be a bit sluggish sometimes. I mean, they cover just the first book in 30 episodes! That's a lot. In fact, it's longer than the audiobook. It's just not made for a TV format. And it's also a lot harder to follow. Very cryptic. Yes, the mystery is kind of the point of the story but the Tencent show gets a bit too confusing at times. Reading the words in the book just makes it easier to keep up somehow. Personally I don't have a problem following all the events but that's because I've read the entire trilogy already. I know everything that happens. I imagine I'd be very confused if I watched this without any prior knowledge though.
So far, there's only one season from both Netflix (8 episodes) and Tencent (30 episodes). And both only cover the first book (well, Netflix does pull a few elements from books 2 and 3 but the main core of the plot is just book 1). So far, everything is rather simple to depict in the visual format. But once we get to the REALLY crazy shit that starts to happen deep into book 2, I really have no idea how they plan to adapt it. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Netflix have renewed The Three-Body Problem for two more seasons to adapt the full trilogy and Tencent are currently also in production for season 2 of Three-Body, putting book 2 on screen. I'm really curious to see what they do and how.
I'm so sorry, this got WAY off topic. Bit too passionate to yap about my favourite stories 😅
But your comment about adapting stories into different media has made me think about this stuff, you know
