MelOn Music Awards 2024 (MMA 2024) REACTION

Comments

Oh and FATE… The Korean title “나는 아픈 건 딱 질색이니까” means “Because I hate being sick”. In Korea, you can just call the song “아.딱.질” (Ah Ttak Jil) for short.

And being a Neverland since OT6 era, I have to say just one thing for IDLE. I was there in the stands, and tearing up the first second when Latata started. I don’t think it needs any more explanation that this performance means sooooo much to every Neverland. Latata, Hann, Lion, Tomboy, Queencard… All those 7 years that we have been there for them through thick and thin. And obviously I was crying when they won the daesang and announced the renewal. For me, being there was one of the best days of my life.

Just a few things on QWER: - Soyeon didn’t create the group. It was a project found by famous YouTuber Kim Gye-ran (literally means Kim Egg). - Chodan (leader, drummer) was the only member who’s on a top level playing their instruments. She majored in drumming and you can tell she’s really freaking good. Both she and Magenta were popular streamers before joining the project group. - Magenta (bass) and Hina (guitar/keyboard) were relatively new to their instruments when joining the group. Hina was a really popular coser, having 4 million followers on TikTok. - Siyeon (vocalist) joined shortly after quitting Japanese idol group NMB48. She learned to play a bit of guitar after joining. - QWER debuted on Oct 18, 2023, just a few months after getting together. It’s amazing to witness their almost unexpected rise to fame within 12 months. - Their performance on MMA started with an intro (debut title track “Discord”). - Then their first mega hit song “TBH”, which was literally played everywhere in Korea, and extremely successful among younger generations. You can check out their performances in different universities. It was madness. - Last song “My Name is Malguem”, title track of their 2nd EP written by Soyeon, is arguably even more successful. It has won 4 first-place wins on music shows without the girls performing on stage (the company can’t afford to set up in the studio for just one performance). - QWER was invited and performed on KGMA this year, two weeks before MMA. And they’ll be at AAA too. - If you’re interested in their music, their B-sides are amazing as well. I particularly like their debut song “Harmony of Stars”, and the latest promoted one called “Goodbye my sadness”. Thanks for reacting to QWER! (and IDLE too but IDLE is obvious!)

QWER - They weren't created by Soyeon, she just wrote a few songs for them. - That intro! - They're very much set up as a traditional band with Siyeon as the lone lead singer in most songs but I like that Magenta, Chodan and Hina also got some vocal parts here. - If I'm not misremembering, QWER was originally only supposed to be a temporary project. They got four established content creators (Magenta and Chodan are Twitch streamers, Hina is a cosplayer and Siyeon was previously a Jpop idol in NMB48) and formed a project band with them. I actively follow every single release in Kpop, so I saw their debut when it came out. Back then I thought they were probably just gonna be a largely unknown band with a pretty small following. I had never heard of their company before. But then they released TBH, which BLEW UP. This song was EVERYWHERE in Kpop. I think that kind of virality turned QWER into a permanent band and got them to stand on big award show stages like this, just one year after debut. tripleS - There's a new subunit out called tripleS ∞! (the infinity symbol is pronounced as „hatchi“) They released a song called „Untitled“ two weeks ago and you REALLY gotta check it out. - This intro performance from Jiyeon is mental. - And over to Seoyeon. S24 to S1. - This is not even all of them. The Hatchi unit I mentioned above was scheduled for a fansign in Japan on that very day, for some goddamn reason. So only 16 of the 24 were actually here for MMA. - GIRLS NEVER DIE ROCK REMIX WOOOO - Hehe, the girl that you said has Winter vibes is Nakyoung. The younger sister of Bibi. - First Loona, then tripleS. Jaden Jeong is a goddamn genius. I love everything about this so so much. Lee Young Ji - „BITCH I'M FAMOUS“ SPEAK YOUR SHIT 🗣🗣 - Youngji and Changbin you say? 👀 Funny thing, while I was watching this, I thought „Man I wish Youngji and Soyeon could collab one day“, completely forgetting that the collab between them that ALREADY EXISTS was how I found Youngji (and Bibi) in the first place 😅 - Mic snatched - Just when you think you've seen it all from Youngji, she pulls out a song like My Cat and brings a completely new vibe. - And the tutting! - I kinda hope that Youngji goes to all the award shows and performs Small Girl with a new duet partner every time. We had D.O. at KGMA, Plave at MAMA, now Sohee at MMA, so what's next? - My Cat is a song released on the EP together with Small Girl. It even has its own animated MV. I love the top comment under it: „Fun fact: Young Ji doesn’t have a cat“ - Christopher is a Danish pop singer who also happens to be quite popular in Korea. He has collabed with Chungha twice before and now he has this new song with Youngji. - You might have heard Bad, which is the other song he performed here. Even though I never actively sought it out, as soon as I saw his performance, it immediately sounded very familiar. It's quite a famous song. BIBI - The fuzzy hair is so cute. - The Disney musical vibes with this song continue. - Look at Nakyoung vibing in the background there 😇 - THIS is what was missing from her MAMA performance. Bringing Derre to show her different vibes. BOYNEXTDOOR - My neighbors are all elderly women, these boys are definitely not next door to me 😂 - SUCH a different vibe to their MAMA performance. - Insane energy indeed. Seeing them live must be a mad experience. RIIZE - I said my piece under the MAMA reaction already, so I won't repeat myself here. I just want to reiterate that I'm pretty concerned about them. Riize now has a fandom that is actively hostile towards them and most of it is down to how badly SM fucked up in the way they handled the situation from the beginning. - Sohee getting ALL the flowers - No, boycotting Riize in order to support them is not as stupid as you may think. Remember the Loona situation two years ago. One of the factors why they managed to get out of that shithole company was the fandom banding together and boycotting every official release. Which lead to the cancellation of that album that was supposed to come out shortly after Chuu's removal. BBC lost so much money in the aftermath that they basically had to shut down completely. Obviously this is not going to happen with SM, they're way too big to fail. But a boycott of Riize is about sending a message to SM. If they're gonna treat their artists like this, they're not going to see any of our money. Something like that. - You know, one thing I always look forward to with your reactions to Riize performances is you losing your mind over that move in Boom Boom Bass 😂 - The MAMA US performance was in the Dolby Theater, which is where the Oscars happen. Quite an important venue, but yes, a bigger stage like this here at MMA is more appropriate for these performances. - „I don't know what the fuck is going on with SM“ Mate, SM fans have been asking that question since 1995 ATEEZ - I finally have my Ateez lightstick! Concert no. 3 coming up in February 🤙🏻 - WHAT AN INTRO. Can you believe that Melon at first only uploaded the two songs separately, without the intro and bridge performances? - Ateez in their marching band era - I'm honestly a bit speechless. They pulled out all the stops for this one. And I just need to mention how in love I am with the sample in Ice On My Teeth. IVE - This is proof, Wonyoung is an irl ballerina princess. - The first ever live performance of Ice Queen! What a song. And what a stage to debut it at. - I think I like this even more than their MAMA stage? (G)I-DLE - I'm sorry but the chances of Soojin returning to the group are close to zero. There has never been a case where an idol came back to a group after leaving due to controversy. Even if the idol in question turned out to be innocent. And Soojin most likely won't be the first one. She still doesn't really have a good reputation in Korea and now that (G)I-DLE have renewed with Cube, it's especially unlikely. Not even any kind of interactions. There was some event last year where both B.I and iKON were present and they completely ignored each other. - Just to make it clear: all five members have extended their contracts with Cube. And despite the confusion and outrage in parts of the fandom, this actually makes perfect sense. No other company would grant them the artistic freedom that they have at Cube. And I don't know if they have the funds to set up their own company. Of if they would even WANT to do anything like that. Apart from the Soojin thing, (G)I-DLE are actually doing pretty damn well there, so why would they change that? Soyeon is basically already in charge of everything anyway. - A perfect celebration of what (G)I-DLE has achieved in the past almost 7 years. Hearing Hann again was magical. - Unsuccessful beeping 😂 - According to Wikipedia, the Korean title of Fate 나는 아픈 건 딱 질색이니까 translates to „Because I hate being sick“ - Bit sad that Super Lady wasn't performed here but Fate probably fits the overall vibe a bit better so I understand. aespa - Three of the best songs of the year is right. 2024 was aespa's year and you can't tell me otherwise. - Did Carpenter Brut produce this intro or what? - I love how the lyrics appear on the LED screens. Somehow that just intensifies the runway feeling of Whiplash. - Of course the camerawork is good. It's MMA! They know how to do their jobs. - Supernova (Soundtrack Ver.) - aespa always does so much at MMA. Last year we had the rock remix of Drama, now all of THIS. - Hey San, your performance demon escaped and has possessed Winter! - I'm honestly a bit scared of the concert because all the setlists I've seen say „Armageddon (Rock Ver.)“ and I don't know what that means 😳 MMA's camerawork was also really good last year. It was MAMA and SBS (plus a few others you haven't seen) that were a shitshow. But yeah, this year has been really good. Even SBS got their shit together for the Gayo Daejeon Summer Edition. Let's hope they don't fuck up the Christmas show again. My ranking of the performances. The top spot should not need any explaining: 1. aespa 2. ATEEZ 3. tripleS 4. (G)I-DLE 5. IVE 6. Lee Young Ji 7. YOASOBI 8. TWS 9. BOYNEXTDOOR 10. RIIZE 11. BIBI 12. QWER 13. Christopher 14. After I posted my comment, I saw and read yours, and noticed we had a lot of the same points 😅 oh well.

Q.W.E.R. - just to make sure: Soyeon didn't create the group, she is the main creator of the title track My Name Is Malgeum. - pretty amazing for 4 of the cutest girls you can find, to create this much energy, just by standing still pretty much 👍🏻 triple.S - their facial expressions were amazing! 10/10. - I agree that they managed to highlight a lot of members, and did nice reveals. But I still think they could've had more interesting formations / utilize their numbers better. - the one who gave you Winter vibes was Nakyoung, Bibi's sister, so that might explain some things 😋 I think they sat next to each other as well in the artists area 😊 - I don't think she (I think Dahyun?) hit every high note as well as she wanted, but she did made sure she hit that last one 🙂 Youngji - drops one of the hardest raps, continues with sweet songs about her cat and little girls 😂 - the chemistry between Youngji and Yujin on Earth Arcade must be crazy. I still haven't checked it out though 😔 ... choices. Bibi - Great vocals but the swing was kind of boring. And although the video was interesting, it was a bit long and uneventful. - I liked the mannequin performance though. BoyNextDoor - was ok, but nothing special to me. Riize - great vocals, great drop. - "sounds like a James Bond theme". It reminded me of Killing In The Name Of 🙂 Ateez - now that's how you do an intro! 🤩 I love the drama/epicness, love the costumes. - love the dancing. I loved everything about this basically 😅. Maybe the only criticism might be that the energy got less towards the end. Maybe better if they did a shorter version of Ice On My Teeth in the middle or something. IVE - I liked the intro, where the outfits (ballerina) matched the music, but during Heya it was already a bit weird. I don't think they did enough with the Heya music (which is sassy) to give a ballerina vibe. - they did a good job in the intermissions to match the ballerina vibe. But then lost me again with Accendio (totally not ballerina vibe). Still ffing love this song, their vocals and their performance though. (G)I-dle - yeah, weird coincidence that at MAMA IVE's Yujin fired a bow and arrow, and here Soyeon did it as well 😅 - on MAMA Soyeon apparently rapped "I remember what you said in 2021 'You think you can do something without Soojin'". A lot of people took that as she finally letting it all out when their contracts are about to expire. Like a big FU Cube. BUT now, a few weeks later, all members have officially re-signed with Cube 🤔 - I really like the throwbacks to their older hits. But in terms of energy/flow, it was a little jarring. aespa - "vampire club music" 😅 I wish it was a minute longer though 😌 - when you mentioned their shoulder movement, it suddenly made me wonder how great it would be if Chungha would cover Whiplash 😱 (instead, she released a Christmas song today 😅) - Winter was really feeling herself. The powerful isolations, and the wry smiles here and there 👍🏻 The MAMA camerawork wasn't great for me, as usual: they just keep switching/rotating cameraviews like on autopilot. There doesn't seem to be any thought behind it / they often don't make sense, and you never get a good feel of the choreo. MMA is always better imo. And this year was no exception. It was pretty good imo. I do recall one shot where they showed an empty pathway (one of those leading to the center stage) 🫣 Thanks for your reaction!

If you look closely at the end of Armageddon Winter puts some ink on her hand and smears it on her neck as if we needed that last piece of overkill after this performance..

Sascha

So Soyeon's contract with Cube already expired in November which led to many speculations that she will not renew and leave CUBE which then led to GIDLE disbandment rumours. When I watched this performance and realised they are doing a medley of their hits, I was actually bawling my eyes out bc it felt like one last big goodbye stage to their fans, but then queen Soyeon just dropped the bomb in her speech for winning Record of the Year that all members renewed their contracts and GIDLE won't go anywhere and stick with Cube. They should've won Biggest Plot Twist as well for this one. PS: the arrow at MAMA that was actually Yujin from IVE, but yeah they basically had the same idea for both their intros lol

Sascha

the girl from tripleS that gave you Winter vibes is Nakyoung, fun fact she's actually Bibi's little sister and they were sitting together during the entire award show. There was a really adorable moment when Bibi won an award Nakyoung gave her a kiss for the first time since she was 7 years old according to Bibi. Thought that was really funny and wholesome.

Sascha

Oh I see!

As far as I know Soyeon only produced the first song that QWER performed, she also won an award for best songwriting for this one. But the group itself wasnt produced by her, they were formed by a former Korean Youtuber/influencer I think but i dont remember the name.

Sascha

I whole heartedly agree about Ateez work, I love this version slightly more. Ateez chose to perform at KGMA instead of mama and it was okay because they won their first Daesang that day even though it would’ve be amazing to see Ateez reaction to GD and BigBang. Mingi and Hongjoong do know GD as it was revealed earlier this year that they were invited to a personal event for GD. Ateez does have a stage for ice on my teeth that was peaky blinders but it was for Music Bank.
