I-LAND EPISODE 10 - REACTION

Comments

about the whole change in ranking thing, especially in regards to jay and jake: jay was believed to be safe by fans, because... of course he would be? look at him. everyone will be voting for him, so I'll give my vote to others who might not be safe, like say hanbin, right? jake was considered safe as well since it was announced he had that advantage from placing first, again, causing people to not vote that much. when the midpoint showed jay was in danger it suddenly got real and everyone realised they weren't the only ones trying to vote strategically. also yes, this is such a great episode. I love seeing them get the messages and letters, so heartwarming. Niki getting choked up when making it... gods my heart. look at him. I really like how bang PD approached this, the way he actually gives them sincere words like this.

You are right this is so dark hahaha. I always say it Hunger Game: Idol Version. This episode is at least has much more heartwarming contents. But when they all gathering outside and started crying after watching heartwarming videos and heeseung said that actually some may not make it, it's somehow reminds me of Movie/Anime that scene when they gather together before one by one are going have to die huhuhu.. Midpoint result as Jay in the last spot is insane like there is no way haha, i don't know if mnet intentionally choose timing when jay, k, ni-ki is in the lowest for drama, like we don't know exactly what time they choose the midpoint result. It really nice for them to meet Seventeen, i wish BTS could do this too. i agree i will trade sunghoon for hanbin at the mini challenge. Hoshi is really nice, and has great personality, they are so down to earth, very amazing seniors. omgggg Jay do looks like Jun hahaha. i googled it and it insane. Jay started become main character since last episode haha, this show is blessed to have him, he has really good narative, he is amazing skillwise+visual but always has underdog quality, he always get push down but never give up and always relentless trying harder. The show in beginning kinda potrayed him as stubborn badboy vibe but now we know he is actually soft and unintentionally funny. to write letters to every i-landers is really adorable for him, show how caring and thoughtful he is as person. Ohhh K redemption arc, i hope it's not too late (it's too late ...) K so sweet, when he hugs jay and console him not to think about getting eliminated and when he said "WE WILL DEBUT TOGETHER", i'm dying huhuhuhu, what a twist, such peak cinema. also jay's video to K, really the twist. i'm sorry this show is crazy haha.. My heart really hurt for Ta-Ki, atleast his suffering is ending, And now he is in another amazing group. i still hold grudge with person that give ta-ki those haircut. Yeah i never thought ni-ki will be struggle this hard in this show lol. he actually never in save position huhuhu. if i see this show real time i will thought it will be K instead ni-ki.

Hello! I am re-watching with you & I'm commenting because this is my fave ep for many reasons: (it's gonna be long) 1. So happy to have Seventeen here. I agree when you said this was a short break for them. They've felt very concrete-hunger games-gloomy since the beginning of part2 when the 1st rankings were announced with all the rollercoaster emotions in the competition. They're just kids & they can't even properly contact their family for moral support. It was also the height of covid that time (2020), so even if the showrunners will allow visitors or all the trainees to go out, it won't be ideal quarantine/health-wise. Having to interact with such successful seniors like Seventeen definitely refreshed the mood, renewed their fighting spirits! 2. They've got videos & letters from fans. Again because of covid, they couldn't have live audience during their performances (unlike shows today), which could have boosted their morale. The only hint they get is from the number of fan votes, so it is sad if you are among the lower rankings. Receiving videos & letters kinda confirmed that the numbers have faces, like real people supporting them no matter your ranks are. I was wishing then that Geonu also received some letters though not shown here. 3. Video messages for each other. This episode showed that the applicants actually liked each other, that all the past conflicts are just misunderstandings, NONE of them is malicious. They're just in immense pressure. Hell, even grown adults have difficulty communicating. As you said, this episode showed that K is getting along with them, making conscious efforts to to be in harmony. Looking back after this episode aired, a lot of people wanted them to just debut together not just 7, & that also made the succeeding eliminations more heartbreaking. Their trauma-bonding is making me cry... 4. Hanbin getting rank 4. To me, this was the episode that producers started to take Hanbin seriously, having seen that fans WILL actually vote for him. As an audience it baffled me when I seem to know nothing of him because his screentime is very low, that made him appear to have no personality or not interesting at all. Maybe because of the language barrier (he's Vietnamese), or he just have an amicable attitude that no conflict arises from him, I'm sure a lot happened at the back but the editors just wont show it. It's so frustrating when they wont even show the feedbacks he get from the producers. 5. Sunoo getting properly recognized. To me, this was the episode that the applicants started to take him seriously SKILL-wise. In part 1, Sunoo got within the 16 after his entrance dance, but he was voted out of 12. The producers brought him back in and he even got high marks for his FIRE performance, but again voted out! In part 2, he got rank 1 in fan votes but the episode 7 was edited like the applicants think that he got in only because of his popularity since he's mostly on the ground. After the Fake Love performance, he ranked 5th, but the tone in the show is that he dropped in ranks, unable to maintain his rank 1 instead of highlighting that he received good remarks from the producers. This episode however, the applicants saw that Sunoo indeed can shine bright with his skills, has clear advantage in these concepts, and having chosen as winner by Seventeen seniors! Like breaking news, he's a strong contender! Sorry but to me, the applicants previously downplayed his skills. 6. JAY jumping to rank3. It is one of the major plot twists of the whole show. No matter who you are, last rank 11 will be upsetting. But remembering what JAY said in episode 6 that he thinks he wont win in popularity votes, the midpoint results must really taken a toll on him. Like the feeling of "I knew it but it still hurts..." (JAKE also said Australia might not vote, I believe this is because KPOP is not popular there). I kept on thinking what was the intention behind showing the midpoint results (this is the only time they did it) but it did reveal a lot of things, that fans would rally for JAY as high as 3, and that for JAKE the change isn't much although he got the 24hrs-benefit. So this was like an interest-check for the producers. And again there's the intention to get 'reaction' from the low rankers JUST FOR TV. And they got it mostly from JAY. He was logical and self-aware that he might really go, informed his team during the choosing of parts so they would know what to do afterwards, wrote letters to properly say appreciation words to them that he probably cant say because of the shock of dropping out. This showed a very warm and sweet side of him, because in ep1 he was introduced as "strong minded, stubborn", This narrative of him got me thinking they might be expecting conflicts from him, but NO, he is actually relentless, relatable (as you said!), his honesty is very endearing. At some point the producers said JAY is stable, that rank6 seem to be fitting, like always in the middle. But to me he's always on the edge, and you said it, cant seem to catch a break. Sorry but I think the applicants downplayed his skills too because to them his forward emotions and hilarious moments are more memorable. All the more that this is giving him the leader-of-underdogs vibe, especially on ep4 (the ground fire performance has become 'legendary', like the epitome of a comeback), and episode 9 (the first time NI-KI smiled in getting parts was in DIY team). In reality, JAY is among the top & popular trainees in Bighit along with HEESEUNG, SUNGHOON, & JUNGWON. The rest of applicants in part2 were scouted when BELIFT formed (not sure about K & Geuno). Trainee backstories now revealed that JAY is noted for his rap, hip-hop, & freestyle dance in addition to being a really rich Seattle boy (HAHAHA). JAY and HEESEUNG are closer in age and also in training time. So yeah, JAY has good reputation skill-wise, just his personality sometimes overshadows it. It makes sense if he feels upset when not picked to be in HEESEUNG team in ep9. They are close like family & naturally you want to be with your ace friend, but during unit performances, JAY seems to be always in the other team. In fact, the Seventeen mini-mission is the only time JAY & HEESEUNG are on the same team. But yeah JAY plot-twisted ep9 into comedy. FINALLY, as you already know the ENHYPEN members, pay attention to how they were introduced in ep1, and how their narrative progresses in the show until ep12: HEESEUNG - solo entrance, Ace from Bighit, good training time, HYUNG. ALL episodes in constant pressure to maintain this reputation, to be always reliable. (He's just a kid too!) The 'almost a TXT member' pissed me off. The producers in part2 are all from Bighit, so just imagine the very high expectations from HEESEUNG & other bighit trainees. The show writer said that HEESEUNG cried the most, but yeah JAY's crying outshined [why does it have to be so sad & hilarious at the same time?] JAY & SUNGHOON - unit entrance, popular duo from Bighit, good training time, good chemistry, both born in 2002 same-age friends for a long time (02z), HYUNG. Friendship was tested when they switched parts, & another highlight in ep10 when JAY called him his only-unit. Very popular duo until now as they are the only unit that survived. SUNGHOON - handsome, elegant & awarded figure skater, very brave to change career. He even said during Fake Love test that if he fails, he wont be able to go back to figure skating. JAY - stubborn, strong personality, swag (almost opposite of SUNGHOON hence black/white duo). Did you notice the sharp change in background music when they came in? JUNGWON - unit entrance with 2 others....young, cute, was a taekwondo athlete, BangPD said to look forward to his vocals which clearly showed in the show. In part2, he is the Korean maknae (youngest) [Daniel was the 'American maknae', NI-KI was the Japanese maknae]. The maknae position is important, & always considered seriously by fans when creating a group, & have some influence in the voting. Also pick-up clues on how he ended up being the leader of ENYPEN JAKE - unit entrance with SUNOO & 1 other, won the competitive audition in Australia, short training time, 02z same age friends with JAY & SUNGHOON (muscle battle). Very clear narrative on GROWTH: mic drop in ep2 -> comeback from the ground in ep4 -> original survivor 6 in ep6 -> rank 1 after Flicker performance ep9 -> ENHYPEN member ep12. SUNOO - unit entrance with JAKE (the short-training group), very bright, fresh performance, noted for facial expressions. The whole time just a roller coaster experience in the show. I always wonder why the GROWTH narrative is also not emphasized for him. Similar to JAKE in ep9, SUNOO was also struggling with a dance move, and he overcome it but wasn't highlighted. Just saying... NI-KI - unit entrance with HANBIN & NICHOLAS (the foreign group), michael jackson dancing. He was very young but never really treated like that especially on the ground when he was kept pushed as leader. He might be dancing since he's very little but he only got a short training time under the kpop training system which I believe is a different experience especially in the vocals. Did you read until the end? Thank you. By the way, I like the aesthetic of your patreon page. Also thank you for the summary archive of your reactions that was pinned. It was thoughtful and useful.

"This has been one of the most fun/funny episodes of the show so far which has usually been pretty dark" I agree. I was starting to think it was just me who thought this show has been kinda "dark". So this was a nice change. Up until the elimination of course. When they mentioned they were going "outside", I thought "finally out of that stuffy place, some sunshine, blue skies, green grass, some color and change of scenery", but, alas, I was mistaken 😔 Nice thumbnail though 😅

- Jay in last place is insane, what the hell. - SVT Performance Team in the house! - I was smiling like an idiot the whole time SVT were here - Let's just enjoy this rare moment of levity while it lasts. - Good to see some character growth from K. I hope he doesn't just take over anyway like last time when Heeseung was the actual leader. - Heeseung about to do unspeakable things to that pillow - JAY IN THIRD PLACE LETS FUCKING GOOOO - I really thought Taki was gonna make it into the next round :/

The schedule hasn't changed btw lol, the Survival Show reactions are for Friday but I am often impatient and upload stuff earlier than usual if I get the chance to record it ahead of time :)
