Feel free to skip the fist 20 minutes cause I was toooooo annoyed 😅

Produce 101 Episode 4 - REACTION

Comments

I think the thing to remember with Kahi is she debuted super late compared to most people in her late 20s. She probably finds the attitude of the trainees who have this great opportunity so young super disrespectful to people like herself who struggle and fight for every opportunity they got and to make the most of them. Like you have this great opportunity and you're not putting effort in and laughing at mistakes instead of fixing them like you don't care how good you do, like it doesn't matter if you do well or not. She is kind of strict wth them but I kind of understand too.

I see what you mean about the cameras in the performances but honestly I went back and watched a bunch of the performances again at x2 speed too better tell how different they were and it's pretty minimal the differences. I think it just feels dramatic becausee each team gets "good" angles and in each matchup there was a team with better charisma, skills, facial expressions, or all of the above. Like the judges keep mentioning those are what have impact and help the audience focus during a performance. The teams that just perform well without those extras are hard to focus on during the performance even if they don't mess up. It's not bbad there's just nothing too draw and keep your attention especially so as youu get used to higher level performances. Just good performances start losing impact then and become less interesting to watch. In these sshows everyone can put on an okay/good performance so jusst good comes across as umimpactful. It's why everytime I hear you say "why are they making a big deal of this small mistake it was a GOOD performance?" or "it was OKAY". I'm like well yeah but the point is that's the minimum or even below the minimum standard they should meet on a survival show. They're aiming to become successful idols not just debut. I agree you have to consider training periods and their potential for growth but I think you also forget once they become part of a group they don't train for a while and finish getting polished before touring or promoting after the show even if it's meant to be a group with a longer life like Kep1er. They tend to release music/MVs and promote pretty much as soon as the show ends. I appreciate noticing what they're good at but just wanting to make sure you understand these small mistaks are big mistakes in the minds of potential fans after they debut. Slips, stumbles, voice cracks and such on stage literally go viral and are used by anti-fans to tear down groups and can lead to disbanding or severe loss of popularity and connections in the industry and fewer collaborations. If fans aren't confident the members making those mistakes on survival shows won't make them in the formed group or that they can bring positive benefit that outweighs that to the group or their likeability outweighs that they won't vote for or support tthat member so in a way as much as it seems small on the show it kind of also is a big deal so it'll always get focused on to make sure people know before deciding to support that member. Trying not to ran/ramble/go on forever. I think I failed lol Anyway loving the reactions. I sympathize as a fellow editor.

If you think the editing is bad on this show and manipulative then never watch the recent Fantasy Boys survival show. Especially the first performances for the ranking process. They didn't have the rights to like half the music the competitors prepared so some of it they replaced the music in post and it didn't fit or they skipped it entirely or you just heard their voice or saw their dancing with no music but all the reactions are still there like it is talking about how they match the beat, etc. Plus they skipped tons of performances, the order jumped all around and they blatantly edited people with better visuals and popularity better. Some of the challenges were blatantly unrelated to skill and straight up popularity contests too.

I still can't believe that they didn't start this episode by just playing the into the new world performance. You are not the only one annoyed as heck with mnet. I don't blame you for not recognizing Yeonjung since A this was 10 years ago and 2 WJSN is a big group and you only watched Q2 once as it was airing over a year ago. Unfortunately I've kinda been underwhelmed by most of these performances. I prefer Queendom performances with experienced professionals instead of survival show performances by super young trainees. I also hate how in these shows mnet always gives both groups the exact same outfits just in different colors and they usually dress one of the groups in some ugly color. DG I appreciate that you're trying super hard to be unbiased but this is literally a popularity contest :) Also the literal rules are not vote for the better team but instead just vote for a single member. So while I agree that Team 2 did better Kim Sejeong I assume would also have gotten your vote. I also don't like that the voting for the actual performance by the live audience is for a single member instead of which team did better. It makes it so even your own teammates are your rivals as you need to get the best parts to shine more than them instead of just trying to have the best teamwork in order to win the round. Now I do understand that in all survivals shows all of the other contestants are your rivals but your current teammates shouldn't actually be your rivals until the next round. The point of the show is to form a group so the contestants shouldn't be punished for demonstrating their ability to support each other. I would normally appreciate Choi Yoojung for being humble and taking a back seat to let her team members shine but she was punished by the rules because the performance voting is by the individual. BTW mnet didn't make us wait a week for the scores from this round because they already showed all of the individual scores with and without the bonus points for each group. So since they just showed us Sejeong with 204 votes and all of the other highest were only in the hundreds it uh wasn't very suspenseful. These are individual votes before the online voting and I expect the total number of votes cast to be in the millions depending on how often the viewers can vote so I really don't think the 1000 votes matter except as a tie breaker. Oh boy strap in for the first ever elimination episode. I'm very worried for our sanity. You have my permission to hit the 10 second button a couple of times in between each announcement if they're milking the 97 announcements and we know that they will. I enjoyed the reaction and don't ever feel like your criticizing mnet too much because we all know that they deserve it :) P.S. I believe you pronounce Sohye as So-Hey. Like Hyeri is Hey-ri from Girls Day and HyeMiLeeYeChaePa.

I have the feeling Daniel's blood pressure rises every Friday... All kidding aside, this was a pretty fun episode. There were some good performance moments, at least from what I got out of Mnet's editing lol. But I have to admit... I really don't click with Sohye. I know she's in a rough situation and she works hard etc... but I just don't find her and her storyline interesting at all. I wish that some of her screentime and focus would go to other contestants, like Kim Juna or those hiphop trainees... oh well. Oh, you had asked on what criteria the contestants are being voted on, well it's the audience votes. And from other shows I can guess that visuals and personal charm are the main criteria... which is understandable given the role of idols, but some of the voting results are really pretty shocking sometimes. Anyways, next week is episode 5 with the eliminations, and we're basically halfway through the show already. Crazy. I'm curious though, Daniel. You already know like 3-4 of the IOI members, could you predict who else makes it into the final lineup? No pressure if you don't want to do it of course, but I think it would be interesting to see how accurate you might be. Because for me, I know the lineup but have never watched the show before, so the final members stand out to me directly. It feels inevitable to me that they would make it in, you know? But I wonder if you would have the same feeling without the benefit of hindsight.

The absolute look of disgust on the tumbnail, should be an interesting one - No, there's always cause to be mad at Mnet. Like I said under the last episode, they've done this exact kind of edit two seasons later in Produce 48 as well. But in an even more malicious manner. Which was where I quit watching that show. And anyone who claims that Mnet edits like this „to make the show more engaging“ can fuck right off. - So Chanmi missed ONE note but nailed the rest of the performance. And the Mnet assholes focus all of their shitty ass editing on that one little mistake. - Well to be fair, WJSN haven't released anything in a year and a half. They just kinda won Queendom 2, released a single and bailed. It's understandable that your memory of their faces would get a bit hazy. But Seola has just recently debuted solo with the fantastic song Without U. Definitely do check it out when you get the chance! 4Minute – Hot Issue - 4Minute debuted in 2009 and their youngest member Sohyun was also 14 at the time. That choreo was also in the original, though a bit tamer than what they're doing here on PD101. Still a bit weird tho 🤨 - I can't really tell which team did better. I think I'm leaning towards the first team? But there was also an odd bit of editing on the second team so I don't know. - Yup, I have no objections to team 1 winning this. - Oh shit the votes for Hwang Sooyeon. No wonder Dreamcatcher are such monsters of choreography with THIS performance director. After School – AH - Kahi be like „wtf are you doing to my song“ - Gotta admit, I might have a bit of a crush on Im Nayoung so that could bias my vote here. - Ok but team 2's vibe was totally off, regardless of my bias. It just wasn't right for this song. - Oh fuck, guess I'm not the only one with a Nayoung bias miss A – Bad Girl Good Girl - I wonder if team 2 is being a bit too overconfident about their odds while team 1 practicing that much more. - Of course Mnet have their favourites in their editing. - From what I can tell, these two teams are about equal to me. - Huh. - 100% agree with you. Showing the full uninterrupted performances should be priority number 1 on shows like this. As much as the show overall was a letdown, one thing I appreciated about the later live episodes of Queendom Puzzle was the fact that they were not *able* to edit the performances, courtesy of it being a live broadcast. Kara – Break It - Ah, here we have Kim Nayoung. Not to be confused with Im Nayoung. Not to be confused with Im Nayeon either 🥸 - Hwang In-sun was 29 when this show aired. Definitely on the older side for a trainee. - Yeah, losing the hat was the right call here. - This goes to team 2 for me. They were just consistently a bit better in every aspect. - Afaik GZBKarma is Swiss but from the French speaking part of Switzerland. But I honestly don't see the Nayoung resemblance. - WOW that was close! f(x) – La chA TA - Harsh but honestly not wrong, that first team didn't do anything right in that training session. - The girl that looked familiar to you is Kim Doyeon, a member of Weki Meki. But I don't know where you would have seen her. In terms of her group you only watched Yoojung's solo debut. - Yes, this is also a team 2 win for me. Wonder Girls – Irony - The power of practice! - Oh shit I didn't even realise that Sejeong was in this group until the actual performance started 😅 - Fuck you Mnet. - Aside from Sohye's one mistake, this was good! Mnet need to get their heads out of their arses. - Both groups were really damn good! - Well well well, would you look at that. Seems like Mnet isn't able to trick an actual live audience and they don't care that much about one little mistake as long as it isn't played back to them 50 fucking times. - SEJEONG TWO HUNDRED VOTES WHAT THE FUCK Top 11 without the 1000 vote benefit: 1. Kim Sejeong 2. Hwang Sooyeon 3. Im Nayoung 4. Kim Juna 5. Kim Doyeon 6. Jeon Somi 7. Kim Minkyung 8. Choi Yoojung 9. Kang Yebin 10. Joo Kyulkyung / Zhou Jieqiong / Pinky 11. Park Siyeon Top 11 with the 1000 vote benefit: 1. Kim Sejeong 2. Hwang Sooyeon 3. Im Nayoung 4. Kim Juna 5. Kim Doyeon 6. Jeon Somi 7. Kim Minkyung 8. Kang Yebin 9. Park Siyeon 10. Kim Sihyeon 11. Park Minji So yeah, next week we have the dreaded episode 5. Elimination time. I wonder if they already had the formula to make it as torturous as possible back then.

- Classic Mnet beating a dead horse over and over again. We should've had a "Chanmi mistake rewind counter" or something 🙄 - I totally agree with you on the whole "you can watch the full performance on Youtube" thing. That's no excuse to butcher performances. - "This creates a narrative". Exactly what Mnet is always trying to do, sadly 😔 (instead of just make the music, the performances, and the characters of the girls the main focus). 4minute - Hot Issue - I liked the performance and energy of the 1st team better. Danced quite maturely and confidently, especially for their age. Not sure about that one move though 😬 - The girl that scored 180 was Hwang Sooyeon. She's responsible for most of Dreamcatcher's amazing choreographies! (main performance director) ❤️ After School - Ah - It's quite difficult to pick who did better because I feel they showed too little of either. - "Stone" Nayoung crying and showing emotions here. Miss A - Bad Girl Good Girl - this editing showed everything BUT the performance 🤨 That's quite an achievement. - yup, team 1 had botched editing, team 2 had nice editing, and that makes you feel that team 1's performance was chaotic, which doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Kara - Break It - from the moment team 1 walked on stage (2 closeups), to their introduction, to the behind-the-scenes, to the actual performance, (even her outfit), to the only interviews after the performance, ALL of the focus was on Kim Nayoung. I mean, come on, we get it, she's the ace, but do you really need to make it THAT obvious? - I liked Insun too. And she did great in all the clips they showed. I also like her mature voice. It may not suit every song, but it might suit certain songs that others can't. - I liked the 2nd performance a little better. It felt more like a team. No weak links. f(x) - La chA TA - Team 1 did ok, but their facial expressions seem to diminish towards the end. So a bit anticlimactic. - The tall girl with the leather jacket is Doyeon. I'm not sure where you might have seen her but she's from Weki Meki. - Your dog has allergies? That's pawful 😏 Wondergirls - Irony - A mistake! LET'S REPEAT IT AT LEAST 14 TIMES!!! 🤮 EDM style! - I also always struggle with Sohye's name, but just ignore the "y": [so-he]. She's a weird one for me, but at least she did good here. Even though at this point Sejeong got rank 1 and Somi got rank 6, Mnet already started the (non existing) "rivalry" between them here: everytime they show Sejeong, they show Somi immediately after, and they even ended with a splitscreen between them. You know, like one of those "versus" screens in fighting games. Why between a #1 and a #6 though? Did Mnet know something we didn't? 🤔

crispy chicken

At leassstt then didnt rigged the votes. Plus some of these method didnt really work, like how we saw Mnet pushed Bora in GP 999, but she still didnt debut.

- the training of team 1 of Ironie went viral and the phrase "Sohye do you want to become a singer" became a meme every season this phrase came back and every trainee is reminded of that. - Irony Team 1 no Sohye did not have the same treatment as Chanmi. Chanmie had a lot of experience and a big background plus she was hand vocal her mistake was major in the performance while Sohye started from zero and trained like crazy she knew so much about dancing that she made a mistake on the words . In addition there were 2 or 3 false outs but the performance continued. with the edition we immediately saw that Sejeong was very popular with the production, but also with the other trainees and mentors. At this point there was almost no doubt that she would be in the final line up unless she made huge mistakes later or radically changed her behavior. well on his way is incredible and the - Irony Team 2 the performance was good but what made them lose was the somewhat authoritarian attitude of their leader who wanted to pull the cover on her. we can see that she knows how to use these members but has not valued them. Sejeong became very popular largely thanks to her personality which is still very popular today. everyone who works with her in music or drama sells her personality and her kindness.

-LOL even I who am used to seeing MNET programs and even if the produced series are my favorite. I agree that this performance is particularly abused but as you say it yourself DG you know how it works. MNET has this very particular way of editing their shows in several ways and you can see the full performance on their site or on you tube.but I understand that it is particular for those foreign to the MNET program but you are used to it by now. it's just that as you watch the shows late you would like to be able to see all the performances during the show which I understand. for this round I was part of the public so nothing shocked me. but later when I watched the show again I admit to having been frustrated I had to watch all the performances again without interruption and some fancams of certain girls who had less than screen time. but yes it creates a narrative the question is what is the narrative (decried Chanmi?, Shown the power of the Somi fanbase, probably both) - yes you can compare BYJ with Gordon Ramses and the editing of MNET with kitchen nightmare. Personally I find it fun even if sometimes they do too much. I pay less attention to that, I know them too well. -Hot Issue team 1 nothing to say very clean performance Sua shines a bit more than the others. -Hot Issue team 2 Yoojung despite herself took all the attention on herself but Minseo did a good job. yes DG you're right, team number 1 better transcribed the intention of the song and the group 4MINUTE, team 2 was much too cute. 4MINUTE was a group CUBE like (G)IDLE and Hyuna was like Soyeon. - I think in my humble opinion that the votes at the beginning of the show before the girls were really popular were based essentially on their talent more than on their popularity (even if there are cases where popularity wins). but at the end of the show it was estimated that the majority of the girls who survived had talent so the votes were mainly based on popularity. -AH team 1 good performance they completely have the sexy vibe of AFTER SCHOOL. Stone Nayoung is in his element. - AH team 2 Risa starts from zero like SOHYE she had no basis but she learned quite quickly some of them congratulations. but it is still not enough. and yes, as for the previous performance, the team that best understood the concept and the song won. Lim Nayoung was perfect for this concept, her victory is deserved. - most of the songs performed in this round are songs from a second generation group which was more mature than the next generation so yes the youngest trainees will have difficulty matching the vibe of certain songs. - Good Girl Bad girl Team 1 and team 2 once again it's a question of understanding the concept and the song the 2 teams gave a good performance but team 2 was more in the vibe of the song. -no you are right about most of your criticism. It's just that I'm surprised that it annoys you so much because by now you know MNET and their shows well. I don't think you should get stuck on this. the first episodes of this type of show are always a bit chaotic. and this show has the excuse of being the first of this magnitude. but when half of the participants remain and they get to the heart of the matter, their performance will be longer and better edited. for the first round there are 20 teams I believe and they have 90 second performances. -Break It Team 1 Kim Nayoung like these friends Sejeong and Mina is very considerate and pays very attention to these members from the start I really like all the members of Jelly fish and not only in this season in all the seasons of producing them trainee Jelly fish have always been very friendly and lovely. yes the sample is that of Baby one more time with a few differences. KARA was accused of plagiarism at the time but the song was remixed enough that it was not a problem. -Break it Team 2 yes INSUN is very funny its age has been a running gag throughout the show. but it is very efficient. We all tried to look younger as we got older. Yes, team 2 was better but Nayoung was so good that for me she carried her team even if the votes were quite balanced. - GZB KARMA is a Belgian reactor I have been following her for years, she is probably the most popular among the French-speaking KPOP reactors and yes she looks a little like Nayoung. - Lachata Team 1 not very expressive lack of charisma in general of the group. -Lachata Team 2 Hyemin and Doyeon have a lot of presence on stage they totally erased the others for me Doyeon may seem familiar to you because she is in WEKI MEKI and has acted in drama and web drama.

Fun fact: Lee Hae-in, the leader of "Irony" Team II, is now the Creative Director of Kiss of Life.

Shawn

Nah, I had the same feeling several years ago when I first watched it... It was so painful to adapt to their editing style and the way they tried to control public opinion...
