Produce 101 Episode 2 - REACTION

Had another opportunity to record this one ahead of time, but usually P101 reactions will be released on Friday, as all survivor shows :)

Produce 101 Episode 2 - REACTION

Comments

Like.. there are so many Idols I absolutely love, that were on Produce 101, from Soyeon, to Somi, to Sejeong and Chung Ha, but the REAL reason I LOVE to rewatch this, is 100% Sohye! I love her journey so much 😭

I know who the final line-up members are or most of them but I've never seen the show so I'm watching it with you for the first time as well. - The trainee who has good voice but dont know how to dance, C is the right grade for her cause she doesnt even seem to have a basic dance training and at C level, she'll get that. A level is where they expect you to be great even if they teach it to you only a few times and you can replicate it after practicing. Since she didnt even show any dancing, they have nothing to base it on so she needs to on thr basic level for dancing even if her singing is A/B level. No shade on that and that's consistent throughout all 4 seasons. If she just wants to sing, then she can't be a part of this kpop competition. - For the hiphop group doing girlish moves, at this time in kpop almost all GG are girly/cutesy and very very few outliers that are femme fatale. - You also need to remember that they need to debut immediately after 3 mos after the show so they need to be as ready as they can be or improve immensely within that time period so they need to be very critical to know where to place them and teach them better. The lower your class is, the slower and more detailed training you'll get for Vocal/dance.

- Ah, the contestants watching the first episode was a thing all the way back in season 1 too. - Juna getting a C actually makes sense to me. Trainees in A rank are already assumed to be good dancers and the dance training will be according to that higher standard. Juna might not be able to keep up with that. Placing her in a lower group will get her in a dance class that is more focused on the basics which will be much more helpful to her. - Damn, that Kconic group is good! - Ayo what the hell. Why is Kahi asking for a SNSD concept out of nowhere? - Let's ask them to do something they absolutely have not prepared for and judge them based on that, right? That's bullshit. - I'm honestly a bit confused by the Minnie Mouse group. - Fantagio trainees! Aka Weki Meki! Well, three of them at least. - You just saw a snippet of the PD101 signal song that came out ahead of the show itself. - Holup, they're doing a Gfriend song? That's Glass Bead! The debut song from Gfriend! And they're killing it! - No A? The fuck? - No seriously, what the hell are these ratings? - The thing is also that they competed to debut in an 11 member group. Each individual girl is not gonna get that much time to sing on any given song but they will have to dance the entire time. So having a base level of dance skill is obviously something these judges will look out for. - „I wanted to show that that's not my real personality“ Well good luck with that on an Mnet show of all things - I don't understand why they went with the slow mix of Sunmi's 24 Hours if they're doing the choreo. Original mix would've fit the vibe much better. - OH WAIT WTF THAT WAS CHUNGHA - Chungha getting the A that she deserves - Ayo Jang Keunsuk. Stop being weird. - Ariyoshi Risa was 23 years old when this aired and as we know, for many Kpop companies that is already too old to debut. I can see why she saw this as her last opportunity. - Risa has quit the idol life after this show. She's now a store owner in Seoul and lives a very private life. I found her Instagram but there's a huge gap between her last two posts. The newest one is from January 2024 but the one before that is from May 2018. No public posts for almost six years. - Dude, just say she's cute and be done with it. No need to be such a creep. - Park Soyeon nailed it. Very deserved A. - So this is the rank distribution. 14 A, 19 B, 20 C, 24 D and 24 F. - Pick Me is not one of my favourite signal songs. They definitely improve over the following seasons. - Interesting to see Sohye struggle this much, knowing where she's at now. - Once again you're recognising Kang Mina. As some of us said, she had a big part in Hotel del Luna. - You know the song is too damn high when even the A rank trainees are struggling this much. - Choi Yoojung this low? Damn. - You could do the whole show without Jang Keunsuk for all I care. - To be fair, there was that one guy Cai Jinxin who actually did sign up to Boys Planet as a joke and then somehow bullshitted himself all the way to episode 8. But I don't think there were cases like that here on Produce 101.

I loved how all of the screen time and editing was building up this meaningless rivalry between 2 girls while Chungha is just standing next to them in the background. Then after the performance BYJ saw something in Chungha and had them put on Beyonce and the star Chungha was born. Clearly the editors of mnet have no idea what they are doing. I've always liked BYJ she's hard but fair. I'd rather have her as a teacher than Monika any day. I'm curious to know what you think of the whole letter grade evaluation and preparation for the signal song. In GP999 the girls prepared and were ranked before the show 1-33 and I doubt that they got any training from the mentors. At least with produce they attempt to train the girls. I imagine it's a great opportunity to get a class from these mentors. Sometimes it seems that small companies don't bother to train their trainees and just send them onto these shows to have mnet pay for their training instead. Also with these shows some of the songs are already written and selected so with the hiphop girls the mentors know for a fact that they are about to start Pick Me the following day so it's better to find out now. And as others have mentioned this was before the rise of girl crush and mnet already had a concept for the final group in mind and that isn't it. But also it's more of an attitude thing. These girls aren't going to have any say on the music they are given so if they want to be a part of mnet's girl group they're going to have to be willing to do whatever concept they are given without complaint. This prince of Asia guy gives me the creeps. "You're so cute I want to make you into a keychain" Are you a serial killer Mr. Prince? I like that they reevaluate the trainees after a few days. As they said for the audition they had months to practice one thing and they chose something to highlight their strengths. This is where you get to see how they do under pressure. I'm excited to eventually get to the actual performances as I don't think I've seen almost any of them. I also wonder if they're going to show the actual Pick Me performance in the next episode or if like in GP999 they expect you to have already seen it on youtube and will just show the behind the scenes of it. Loved the reaction as always!

-DG on this web site you can have good quality https://www3.asianvote.net/drama/produce-101 -so yes you know 3 members for sure but as the group has 11 members you don't actually know a lot of members which is a good thing because the show will be more interesting for you and you will have some surprises. - I think you should watch the finale in full because it is not very long compared to the survival finale that you may have watched. and because we know the first major show the tension, the expectation and the joy of the winners is maximum. moreover yes even if you saw the images of the winners they were all made up and primed. whereas in the show they are raw. - for Kim Juna I understand what you mean DG but this state of mind is not only in the heads of trolls or people. but also and above all in the heads of Kim Juna and many people like her who I think that since they are the sons or sisters of such and such a celebrity, they will not be recognized at their true value. but this is not the case for everyone, for example Bahyihiy (Kep1er) is the sister of Kai (TXT) who started several years before her and she does not seem to have had this pressure. and yes the judges only say they don't know how to dance and that's a problem for them because they will be behind those who already know how to dance. but this is not a problem for the judges who will teach him the basics. That's sort of the principle of this survival show. Otherwise Juna probably wouldn't have passed the auditions. -yes GD I forgot to specify but for this show the judges and the production clearly had an idea of concept behind their heads the concept for Girls generations. because they wanted to put together a fairly large group of 11 members. and at that time in 2015 groups with a "cute" and bright concept were very very popular (this is perhaps why groups like Twice, Red Velvet, Oh my girl or I.O.I had phenomenal success). whereas nowadays it's more groups with a Girl Crush concept. so yes the judges wanted girls who, even if they knew how to rap, had to match a more girly, cuter and brighter concept. whereas in other survival shows the concept was not thought out in advance. the production adapted the concept to the winners of the shows. - Fantagio 3 members are part of Weki meki Kim Doyeon, Choi Yoojun and Jung Hyerim but DG you only know Jung Hyerim you see her under the name of ELLY in Queendom Puzzle. - and yes DG you understood Mnet and the production wanted a temporary girl group which should be a hit as quickly as Twice which had started just 2 or 3 months before. the judges therefore had to be fair but critical and not waste time. as they already had the concept in mind and there were a lot of girls they had to act quickly and classify them according to their skills in order to give lessons adapted to each level. having an F is not a punishment in itself, it's just that they need to know their level in order to improve very quickly. so yes you understand that they are good rappers or singers that's very good but they also need to know how to dance, and if possible match the concept they are looking for. When we know this it is quite easy to guess who has the potential to end up in the final Line Up. Sejeong for example was obvious from the first episode just like Chungha. - Ng Sze Kai at the time she made a good impression on me indeed for a girl from Hong Kong she was very talented and had very good pronunciation I could see her being one of the favorites of the show. - now the reference is (G)Idle when we talk about a group focused on hip hop and charisma but at the time it was more groups like 4minutes, 2NE1 or FIERSTAR - the song Pick me went viral in 2015 the meaning of the song was very simple it asked national producers to choose them and vote for them. the very electronic side of the songs was very addictive at the time. DG look at you, a big brother or a dad would say. Proud of Jeon Soyeon's evolution, I feel the same thing every time I watch this Show again. what a gem this girl is. -DG yes yes DG BYJ as Monica vibe for sure. she's tough but fair.

Good point, I always tend to forget that.

Oh, this dropped early! What a nice surprise. Thanks for that I enjoyed this episode and your thoughts/reactions, but I'd just like to point out a few things. This show was filmed from late 2015 to mid 2016. This was before Blackpink's debut, before girlcrush started becoming a truly popular concept. It was the reign of cute and innocent concepts. So it makes sense that the hiphop trainees were asked to do a 'girly' dance. Most girl groups were 'girly' back then, if they wanted to join a girl group they would need to be able to handle that concept. As for Kim Juna, the great singer who didn't know how to dance... well yeah, I have to agree with the judges, even though they're quite harsh. She's auditioning for a spot in an 11-member girl group, she's lucky if she gets 20 secs of lines in a 3-minute song. She's going to be dancing more than singing, and probably like half of the 101 contestants have already had a few months or years of dance training. So whilst harsh, I think her ranking is fair. Now, I know you have a lot on your plate in terms of content, but maybe once you finish PD101 it might be interesting for you to take a look at some IOI songs, and songs from the post-IOI groups? Not a deep dive, just some notable title tracks. After all you might want to know where some of these girls ended up after the show, right?

The judges are probably not safe from evil editing as well.

For some reason I really enjoyed your confused and pained reactions with some of the judges and performances 😂 ngl I have the same reaction now that I rewatched it after a year. They always prefer someone girly who can sing and dance good at the same time. Regarding Kim Sejeong's dancing, shes actually a good dancer but shes a perfectionist, shes always hard on herself. Cant wait for episode 3 ❤️
