Between the 1890s and 1917, prostitution was legalized in Storyville, New Orleans in their red light district. Lulu White was a woman from the West Indies who capitalized on the new legislation and built her own million dollar brothel. She was a true rags to riches story.
In her brothel, there were many chandeliers, plants, furs, and expensive items for her lucrative clients to enjoy while entertaining prostitutes. However, due to a rise in middle-class Protestantism, prostitution was criminalized and laws were more stringently enforced. This lost Lulu her brothel and left her $150,000 in debt. However, had prostitution continued legal operations, the institution would’ve been normalized and sex crimes would’ve dwindled. Unfortunately, women are still condemned today for capitalizing on their own bodies meanwhile men and institutions have capitalized off of female bodies with ease.
I hope to incorporate an Edwardian summer vibe in the video alongside a very comforting, feminine feel.
