I understand that this show causes people to be angry at the cruelty and callousness displayed toward the emotional pain the girls are experiencing, it pales in comparison to the cruelty, pain, and depression experienced by stars in the entertainment industry. I struggle constantly to make people understand this because the industry is filled with attractive people who are good at hiding their pain. The Kpop industry is no different. If one of these girls cannot handle this show, then they wouldn't last 6 months in the industry. It's important for JYP -- the company -- to find that out.
Remember, two of the members of TWICE have taken time away from the group for mental/physicals recovery periods. JYP has given them time, and they have both returned stronger than ever. The process of taking breaks is modeled in this episode. I'm convinced that is 100% intentional. There's a lesson in everything they do on Sixteen.
The Kpop industry is filled with stress, competition, and cruelty from the very beginning. Every Idol's career starts with a trainee audition (many have done several auditions) where the judging is harsh and almost nobody survives. Then every trainee program has monthly competitions and showcases where the losers are eliminated. So these girls have survived _years_ of that before they even walked onto the stage for Sixteen. They all know what they are getting into.
Because they are young and attractive, I think most people think these girls are soft, and I think it is natural for people to want to defend them, especially when they cry. I know I have that reaction. Watching this for the eighth time, though, my conclusion is that these are these are some of the most resilient, strong, determined, serious, and competitive young women on the planet. They all want to be celebrities and be on stage. They know what it takes, and they want it very badly.
The process is hard to watch sometimes, but very few people watch the practices, the preparation, the training. Nobody sees the breakdowns and the tears. Audiences just want to see the touchdowns, the goals, the slam dunks, the killer performances. You are curious what it takes? This is it.

The premise of the show from the beginning has been that there are 7 spots in Major and that the trainees who are in those 7 spots at the end of the show will debut. At the start of every episode JYP looks at the top 7 trainees from the online voting.
I'm really glad that they put the variety camp after that elimination because everyone clearly needed a break.
