CHAPTER 12: THE GREEN BEAST AND SILVER HUNTER

"Are you sure about this?" Andrew asked, eyeing the training ground with apprehension. Two weeks of mandatory rest had passed, and while his shoulder had healed completely thanks to Mrs. Higurashi's skill and Hinata's ointment, he wasn't quite expecting his first day back to training to begin like this.

Tenten grinned, clearly enjoying his discomfort. "Absolutely. If you're going to train properly without killing yourself, you need a structured regimen. And no one knows more about proper training progression than Guy-sensei."

"I've heard... stories," Andrew admitted.

"All true," Tenten confirmed cheerfully. "But despite his eccentricities, he's the best taijutsu master in Konoha. And after seeing your kick-focused style, I knew you had to meet him."

Andrew shifted nervously, running his fingers along the wrapped bundle he carried. The second prototype of his curved blades felt reassuringly solid against his palm, a project he'd been working on with Mr. Higurashi before his collapse. Tenten had been pestering him to let her examine them, but he'd wanted to refine them further first.

"By the way," Tenten said, eyeing the bundle with undisguised interest, "when are you going to let me see the new prototypes? Dad's been suspiciously tight-lipped about them."

"When they're ready," Andrew replied, a small smile tugging at his lips. "They still need adjustments."

Tenten's retort was cut short by an exuberant shout from across the training ground.

"DYNAMIC ENTRY!"

A green blur shot toward them, resolving into the distinctive form of Might Guy as he landed in a dramatic pose, teeth gleaming impossibly bright in the morning sun.

"GOOD MORNING, YOUTHFUL STUDENTS!" Guy's voice boomed across the clearing, startling birds from nearby trees. "I UNDERSTAND ONE OF YOU SEEKS GUIDANCE IN THE MOST NOBLE ART OF TAIJUTSU!"

Andrew blinked, momentarily stunned by the man's sheer... presence. The jonin's green spandex suit, orange leg warmers, and bowl cut were exactly as described in legends whispered among Academy students, yet somehow more overwhelming in person.

"Guy-sensei," Tenten began, her tone carefully modulated as if speaking to an excitable child, "this is Andrew Slayn, the friend I told you about. The one with the unique kicking style."

Guy's thick eyebrows shot up as he assessed Andrew with newfound interest. "AH YES! Tenten has spoken most highly of your YOUTHFUL DEDICATION!" His voice dropped to what might have been a whisper for anyone else—merely conversational volume for Guy. "Though she also mentioned your UNYOUTHFUL tendency to overexert yourself."

Andrew shot Tenten a betrayed look, which she answered with an unrepentant shrug.

"I've learned my lesson about that," Andrew assured Guy. "I'm looking for a better way to structure my training."

"EXCELLENT!" Guy's volume returned to window-rattling levels. "The path to mastery requires BALANCE! Pushing beyond limits without breaking them! A delicate dance between EFFORT and RECOVERY!"

Despite the theatrical delivery, Andrew recognized the wisdom in Guy's words. It aligned perfectly with what Artemis had told him in his dream—the importance of knowing when to push and when to rest.

"My team will be joining us shortly," Guy continued. "They represent different approaches to training that might prove INSTRUCTIVE!"

As if on cue, three figures appeared at the edge of the training ground. Andrew recognized them immediately: Rock Lee, Guy's mini-clone in both appearance and enthusiasm; Neji Hyūga, whose blank white eyes held a perpetual disdain; and Tenten, who waved to her approaching teammates.

Lee spotted them and broke into a sprint. "GUY-SENSEI! I HAVE COMPLETED MY MORNING LAPS AROUND THE VILLAGE!" He skidded to a halt, dust billowing around his orange leg warmers. "TEN TIMES AS PROMISED!"

"EXCELLENT WORK, LEE!" Guy gave his protégé a thumbs-up and blinding smile. "Your dedication continues to INSPIRE!"

Neji approached at a more dignified pace, hands in his pockets. "Are we training, or is this a social gathering?" His pale eyes flickered dismissively over Andrew.

"Both, my YOUTHFUL student!" Guy clapped a hand on Neji's shoulder, causing the Hyūga to wince slightly. "Today we welcome young Andrew, whose UNIQUE fighting style has caught Tenten's attention!"

Lee immediately turned to Andrew, eyes burning with intensity. "A UNIQUE STYLE? What is it? How long have you trained? What are your training methods? Can you demonstrate?"

The rapid-fire questions came without pause for breath, leaving Andrew momentarily overwhelmed.

"Give him space, Lee," Tenten intervened. "Andrew uses a kick-focused style that leaves his hands free for jutsu or weapons. It's unlike anything taught at the Academy."

"Self-taught techniques rarely have merit," Neji remarked coldly. "Proper form comes from established traditions."

Andrew felt a flicker of annoyance at the Hyūga's dismissal. "Traditional forms have their place," he replied evenly, "but innovation has value too."

"WELL SAID!" Guy beamed. "The strongest shinobi adapt and evolve! Now, let us see this style of yours, Andrew-kun!"

Setting aside his wrapped blades, Andrew moved to the center of the clearing. He began with basic stances, demonstrating the foundational positions of his Taekwondo-inspired techniques. As he flowed through the forms, he could feel four pairs of eyes tracking his movements with varying degrees of interest.

When he transitioned into more complex sequences—spinning kicks, combinations that used momentum to chain together multiple strikes—he kept his movements clean and precise, focusing on form rather than power or speed.

"Interesting," Guy murmured, his usual bombastic tone temporarily subdued by professional assessment. "Your center of gravity shifts are extremely efficient. And the way you maintain hand availability throughout is tactically advantageous."

Encouraged, Andrew demonstrated one of his signature combinations—a low sweeping kick that flowed into a tornado kick, his body spinning through the air before landing perfectly balanced.

"MAGNIFICENT!" Lee exclaimed, eyes shining. "Such youthful control!"

"The footwork is impeccable," Tenten added, professional appreciation clear in her voice. "And it complements his weapon style perfectly."

Neji watched silently, his expression unreadable, though Andrew thought he detected a slight narrowing of those pale eyes—perhaps the Hyūga's version of reluctant interest.

Guy circled Andrew thoughtfully. "I see elements of multiple disciplines here, yet the synthesis is unique. Where did you learn this style, Andrew-kun?"

The question Andrew had been dreading. He couldn't exactly explain that he'd learned Taekwondo in another life, on another world.

"I... pieced it together from observations and books," he replied carefully. "I've always found traditional hand-based strikes limiting. I wanted something that would allow more versatility."

Guy nodded, seemingly accepting this explanation. "INNOVATION BORN OF NECESSITY! Truly the way of genius!" He struck a dramatic pose. "Now, let us see how it functions against an opponent!"

Before Andrew could prepare himself, Guy called out, "Lee! Provide a demonstration match for our guest!"

Lee's face lit up with excitement. "YES, GUY-SENSEI!" He bounded forward, taking a traditional Strong Fist stance opposite Andrew. "I look forward to testing myself against your unique style!"

Andrew settled into his ready position, reminding himself that Lee, despite still being a genin, was far more advanced than most chunin in taijutsu. He would need to be careful.

"Begin when ready!" Guy announced.

Lee moved first, his speed impressive as he launched a straight punch toward Andrew's chest. Andrew pivoted, letting the attack pass by as he countered with a roundhouse kick that Lee blocked with his forearm.

"Excellent reflexes!" Lee praised, immediately following with a low sweeping kick of his own.

Andrew leapt over it, using the momentum to spin into a back kick that forced Lee to create distance. The exchange continued, with Andrew relying on his kicks and footwork while Lee demonstrated the orthodox Strong Fist style with its balanced hand and foot techniques.

As they fought, Andrew could hear Guy's running commentary.

"Note how Andrew keeps his hands positioned for potential jutsu throughout the exchange! A practical adaptation for a shinobi! And Lee's response—perfect textbook form creating an interesting tactical contrast!"

The spar escalated in intensity, with Lee gradually increasing his speed. Andrew found himself being pushed defensively, the genin's superior training becoming evident.

"Your style has advantages," Lee called out between attacks, "but also weaknesses! Without hand techniques, your close-range options become limited!"

To demonstrate, he slipped inside Andrew's optimal kicking range, forcing Andrew to rely on evasion rather than counterattacks.

Adapting quickly, Andrew channeled a small amount of his silver chakra to his feet, enhancing his next kick with just enough extra force to push Lee back. The subtle technique didn't escape Guy's notice.

"CHAKRA ENHANCEMENT! Interesting application!"

Knowing he couldn't match Lee in pure taijutsu, Andrew decided to demonstrate the true advantage of his style. While executing a spinning kick with his right leg, his hands rapidly formed three seals in sequence. As Lee blocked the kick, water from a nearby training post condensed into three small projectiles that shot toward the genin.

Lee's eyes widened in surprise as he was forced to break off his counter to evade the water bullets. "Most impressive! Ninjutsu during taijutsu engagement!"

"Enough!" Guy called, ending the match. Both boys stepped back, bowing respectfully to each other. "A MOST ENLIGHTENING EXCHANGE!"

Andrew was breathing hard, but feeling satisfied. He hadn't expected to match Lee, but he'd demonstrated his style's core principle—keeping his hands free for jutsu even during intense taijutsu exchanges.

"Your style has merit," Guy announced, "though it requires significant refinement. The integration of ninjutsu during physical combat showcases its strategic value."

Even Neji seemed to be reassessing his initial dismissal, though he tried to hide it behind his typical aloof expression. "The style still lacks power at close range," he commented, unable to completely conceal his interest.

"A weakness I'm aware of," Andrew acknowledged, deciding to take the critique constructively. "I'm working on adaptations for when opponents breach my optimal distance."

Tenten had moved to examine Andrew's wrapped bundle during the spar and now approached with it carefully held in her hands. "I think these might help with that problem," she said, her eyes gleaming with weapon-specialist excitement. "May I?"

Realizing she wouldn't be deterred any longer, Andrew nodded. Tenten unwrapped the bundle to reveal two curved blades—prototypes of what would eventually become Lunatum and Neomenia. Though not yet their final forms, the blades already displayed distinctive characteristics: one with a darker metal that seemed to absorb light, the other with a silvery sheen that caught the morning sun.

"These are..." Tenten's voice trailed off as she examined them with expert eyes. "The balance is exceptional, but the chakra channeling capacity needs work. The metal composition is unusual—did Dad mix a special alloy for these?"

"Yes," Andrew confirmed. "We've been experimenting with different compositions to maximize resonance with my chakra nature."

"The curvature is perfect for your spinning techniques," Tenten observed, testing the weight of one blade. "But the handles need modification. See how the grip would strain your wrist during certain movements?" She pointed to a specific angle in the design. "If you adjust this by about fifteen degrees, you'd maintain maneuverability while reducing stress during impact."

Guy approached to study the weapons. "FASCINATING! Weapons designed specifically to complement your taijutsu style!" He stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Such integration of weaponry and physical technique requires HARMONIOUS TRAINING METHODS!"

For the next hour, Guy outlined a structured training regimen designed specifically for Andrew's unique needs. Unlike Andrew's previous self-destructive approach, Guy's method emphasized balanced progression with clearly defined recovery periods.

"The body strengthens during rest, not exertion!" Guy explained, sketching training cycles in the dirt. "Push beyond limits, then allow adaptation before pushing again! This is the SCIENCE OF YOUTH!"

Despite his flamboyant delivery, Andrew recognized the expertise behind Guy's instructions. The jonin understood physical development at a level few others in Konoha could match.

"For your style," Guy continued, "we must prioritize different muscle groups than traditional taijutsu. Hip flexors, hamstrings, and core stability take precedence! Each day focuses on different aspects, with complementary recovery cycles!"

As Guy detailed exercises and progressions, Lee took fervent notes, occasionally exclaiming about the "WISDOM OF GUY-SENSEI'S METHODS." Neji observed with feigned disinterest that didn't quite mask his attention to detail.

Tenten, meanwhile, had settled cross-legged on the ground with Andrew's blades, sketching modifications in a small notebook she carried for weapon designs.

"The chakra channeling pathways should be etched more deeply here," she murmured, tracing a finger along the fuller of one blade. "And if we adjust the tang geometry, you'll get better weight distribution during rotation techniques."

"You've spent a lot of time thinking about this," Andrew observed, impressed by her immediate understanding of his weapons' purpose.

"Of course I have," Tenten replied matter-of-factly. "I've been watching you train for months. I know your style almost as well as you do." She looked up from her sketches, a glint of competition in her eyes. "How else am I supposed to beat you consistently?"

Their conversation was interrupted by Neji, who had apparently reached his limit for social interaction. "If we're done with this exhibition, I'd like to resume actual training."

"PATIENCE, NEJI!" Guy admonished. "Learning from others is ALSO training! But yes, let us proceed with today's scheduled exercises!" He turned to Andrew with a blinding smile. "You are WELCOME to join us, Andrew-kun! Nothing builds camaraderie like shared sweat and effort!"

"He just recovered from chakra exhaustion and severe burns, Guy-sensei," Tenten reminded her teacher. "Maybe something less intense for his first day back?"

"AH! WISE CAUTION!" Guy moderated his enthusiasm slightly. "Perhaps you can observe today, Andrew-kun, and incorporate elements into your personal training tomorrow!"

Andrew nodded gratefully, not quite ready to jump into Guy's notoriously grueling team sessions. "I'd appreciate that. Thank you for the training advice, Guy-sensei."

"ANYTIME, YOUTHFUL FRIEND!" Guy flashed his signature pose—thumbs up, gleaming smile, with what Andrew could have sworn was a 'ping' sound effect from his teeth. "The path of improvement is one best walked together!"

As Team Guy began their training routine, Andrew settled nearby, watching their dynamics with interest. Lee attacked each exercise with boundless enthusiasm, pushing himself to Guy's exacting standards and beyond. Neji performed with precise, economical movements, his technique flawless if lacking Lee's passionate energy. Tenten balanced between them—focused, determined, but maintaining a pragmatic approach to her limitations.

While observing, Andrew reviewed the training plan Guy had outlined. Unlike his previous haphazard approach of training until exhaustion, this regimen incorporated progressive overload, specific recovery periods, and complementary skill development. It was scientific despite Guy's eccentric presentation.

"Impressive, isn't it?" Tenten had broken from the group's rotation to sit beside Andrew, wiping sweat from her brow. "Guy-sensei may seem... unusual, but his methods produce results."

"I can see that," Andrew agreed, watching Lee complete a series of one-handed push-ups that would have challenged most jonin. "Does he always train with you at this intensity?"

"This?" Tenten laughed. "This is nothing. He's taking it easy today because you're here. Normally..." She shuddered dramatically. "Let's just say I've developed a much higher pain tolerance since joining Team Guy."

As she spoke, she continued sketching refinements to Andrew's blade designs. "I think we can improve the chakra conductivity by at least thirty percent with these modifications. Dad has been experimenting with a new forging technique that aligns the metal's crystalline structure with chakra flow patterns."

Andrew leaned closer to examine her sketches. "These are brilliant, Tenten. The channeling geometry is more efficient than anything I'd designed."

"Of course it is," she replied with a confident smirk. "Weapons are my specialty."

Their conversation was interrupted by Neji's approach. The Hyūga prodigy stood before them, arms crossed and expression severe.

"Your style has potential," he stated flatly, the admission seemingly painful for him. "Though it requires significant refinement."

Coming from Neji, this was practically effusive praise. Andrew inclined his head in acknowledgment. "Thank you. Your Gentle Fist techniques are impressive as well."

Neji's eyes narrowed slightly. "You're familiar with Hyūga techniques?"

"Only by reputation," Andrew replied quickly, mentally kicking himself for the potential slip. "The Byakugan's abilities are well-known."

Neji seemed to accept this explanation, though suspicion lingered in his pale eyes. "You should spar with Hinata-sama," he said, a subtle edge entering his voice when mentioning his cousin. "Perhaps you could teach her something useful, since my clan's training has proven insufficient."

Before Andrew could respond to this thinly-veiled insult toward Hinata, Lee bounded over, practically vibrating with energy despite the intense training session.

"Andrew-san! You must join us for training tomorrow! We could learn much from each other's techniques!" His round eyes shone with enthusiasm. "Perhaps a friendly competition? I would be honored to test my Strong Fist against your kicking style again!"

"Maybe in a few days, Lee," Tenten intervened, giving Andrew a sympathetic look. "He's still recovering, remember?"

"OF COURSE!" Lee looked momentarily abashed. "Recovery is an essential component of training! Guy-sensei always says that proper rest builds youthful strength as much as exertion!"

As Team Guy's training session wound down, Andrew gathered his prototype blades, carefully rewrapping them with Tenten's design notes tucked inside the bundle. The morning had been enlightening in multiple ways—not just Guy's training wisdom, but also the dynamics of the team that would eventually play important roles in the events to come.

Guy approached as Andrew prepared to leave. When he spoke, his voice had lost some of its bombastic quality, taking on a more mentorly tone.

"Young Andrew, I sense great potential in you. But remember—" his expression grew uncharacteristically serious, "—a shinobi's greatest strength is not in techniques mastered, but in knowing when to employ them. Balance in training leads to balance in combat, and balance in combat leads to survival."

Andrew bowed respectfully. "Thank you, Guy-sensei. I'll remember that."

"EXCELLENT!" Guy's volume returned to its normal window-rattling level. "Return whenever you wish! The doors of youthful training are ALWAYS OPEN!"

As Andrew departed the training ground with Tenten beside him, he felt a renewed sense of purpose. His collapse had been a necessary wake-up call—a reminder that preparation without preservation was ultimately self-defeating.

"So? What did you think of Guy-sensei?" Tenten asked, a knowing smile playing on her lips.

"He's... exactly as advertised," Andrew replied diplomatically. "But his knowledge is undeniable."

"Told you." Tenten's smile widened to a grin. "Underneath all the 'YOUTH' and spandex is possibly the best taijutsu master in Fire Country."

They walked in comfortable silence for a moment before Tenten spoke again, her tone more serious. "You'll follow his training plan, right? No more midnight chakra exercises until you collapse?"

"I promise," Andrew assured her. "I've learned my lesson."

"Good." She punched his arm lightly. "Because if you don't, I'm telling my mother, and she'll put you on bed rest for a month."

The threat was delivered with a smile, but Andrew knew it wasn't entirely in jest. The concern behind her teasing was genuine—the same concern he'd seen in Naruto's eyes, in Ayame's fussing, in Hinata's careful preparation of healing ointment.

As they reached the village proper, Andrew glanced up at the Hokage Monument, thinking about the challenges that still lay ahead. The future he remembered was not set in stone—his very presence here was proof of that. With proper preparation—balanced, sustainable preparation—perhaps he could change more than he'd initially hoped.

"Hey," Tenten's voice pulled him from his thoughts. "Want to stop by the shop? Dad's been asking when you'd come back to finish those blades."

Andrew nodded, his silver-streaked hair catching the midday sun. "Definitely. I have some new ideas to incorporate."

As they headed toward the Higurashi weapon shop, Andrew felt a sense of rightness settle over him. The path forward would still be challenging, but now he understood how to walk it without destroying himself in the process.

After all, as both Artemis and Guy had emphasized in their different ways: true strength came not just from pushing limits, but from knowing which limits to respect.
