Chapter 4: Beauty Beyond Appearance

The morning sun filtered through the branches of the northern woodland, casting dappled shadows across Andrew's face as he sat cross-legged in a small clearing. Before him, Sionna and Zephyr were engaged in focused training exercises, both Pokémon showing impressive dedication despite having been with him for such a short time.

"That's it, Zephyr! Feel the energy concentrating in your wings," Andrew encouraged as the small Pidgey beat her wings with increasing intensity.

Andrew had discovered yesterday that Zephyr was female when Nurse Joy had mentioned it during their examination. It made him realize how much he still had to learn about his companions beyond what a Pokédex entry could tell him. Each Pokémon was an individual with their own personality, preferences, and potential.

Zephyr chirped with determination, her wings beginning to take on a subtle metallic sheen. They had been working on Steel Wing for the past hour—a move that would give the flying-type Pokémon a crucial advantage against rock and ice types that would normally threaten her.

"You're getting closer," Andrew said encouragingly. "The energy needs to flow from your core, through your body, and concentrate in your wings, hardening them like steel."

Sionna sat nearby, watching with interest. She had already completed her morning training session, during which Andrew had begun teaching her Extrasensory—a psychic-type move that would expand her tactical options significantly. The Vulpix had shown remarkable aptitude, managing to create a weak psychic pulse after just a few attempts.

"You know," Andrew mused as he watched Zephyr continue her practice, "in my previous life, TMs—Technical Machines—were items that could instantly teach Pokémon new moves. But I think I prefer this way. There's something more meaningful about working together to master a new technique."

Sionna nodded in agreement, her amber eyes reflecting a depth of understanding that still sometimes caught Andrew by surprise. She made a soft sound and gestured with her paw toward Zephyr, who was now hovering in place, her wings flashing with a more pronounced metallic gleam.

"Yes, I see it!" Andrew exclaimed. "Zephyr, you're almost there! Try directing that energy toward that fallen branch."

The Pidgey chirped confidently and darted forward, her right wing glowing with steel-type energy as she slashed at the branch. There was a clear impact, stronger than a normal wing attack, though not yet the clean cut of a fully mastered Steel Wing. Still, it left a visible groove in the wood.

"Excellent progress!" Andrew praised, his face lighting up with genuine pride. "A few more days of practice and you'll have it perfected."

Zephyr fluttered back to land on his shoulder, puffing her chest out with satisfaction despite her obvious fatigue. Andrew gently stroked her feathers, feeling the slight warmth from her exertion.

"Let's take a break and have some lunch. You've both earned it," he said, reaching for his backpack.

As they ate—special Pokémon food for Sionna and Zephyr, and a sandwich for Andrew—he found himself reflecting on how different actual training was compared to the games he remembered. There, leveling up and learning moves had been automatic, reduced to numerical values and menu selections. But in reality, it required patience, understanding, and a deep connection between trainer and Pokémon.

"The bond matters more than anything," he said aloud, drawing curious looks from his companions. "In my old world, people would debate endlessly about which Pokémon had the best base stats or most optimal moveset. But they missed what really matters—the relationship, the trust, the willingness to work together."

Sionna made a soft noise of agreement, her six tails swishing thoughtfully behind her. Zephyr, having finished her meal, hopped closer to listen.

"That's why I know our team can be something special," Andrew continued, his eyes bright with conviction. "Not because we'll have the most powerful Pokémon by conventional standards, but because we'll understand and bring out the unique potential in each team member."

Both Pokémon responded with enthusiastic sounds, clearly inspired by their trainer's passion. The moment of connection was interrupted, however, by distant voices coming from somewhere beyond the trees to their right.

"Did you hear that?" Andrew asked, immediately alert.

Sionna's ears perked up, and she turned toward the source of the sound. Zephyr took flight, hovering above the tree line to get a better view before returning to Andrew's shoulder with an agitated chirp.

"Something wrong?" he asked, already packing up their lunch remains. "Let's check it out."

They moved cautiously through the woods, the voices becoming clearer as they approached. Andrew could make out what sounded like taunting laughter and harsh words.

"Look at how ugly it is! No wonder it was alone."

"Yeah, who'd want to be friends with something that hideous?"

"My dad says Feebas are the most worthless Pokémon in existence. They can't even battle properly."

Andrew's jaw tightened at these words. He pushed through the final barrier of undergrowth to find himself at the edge of a small pond. Two boys, perhaps a year or two younger than him, stood at the water's edge. One held a stick that he was using to poke at something in the shallows.

As Andrew drew closer, he saw what they were tormenting—a small, brown fish Pokémon with irregular patches on its body and a perpetually downturned mouth. Despite his previous life's knowledge of Pokémon, seeing a real Feebas still took him by surprise. The fish Pokémon looked even more bedraggled in person than its game sprite had suggested, with its dull scales and sad eyes.

But what struck Andrew most was the expression in those eyes—not just physical pain from the boys' prodding, but a deeper hurt, an awareness of the cruel words being spoken about it.

"Hey!" Andrew called out sharply, stepping into view. "What do you think you're doing?"

The boys spun around, startled by his sudden appearance. They were clearly novice trainers—each had a single Poké Ball clipped to their belts, and their clothing lacked the weathered look of experienced travelers.

"What's it to you?" challenged the taller of the two, a freckled boy with spiky brown hair. "We're just having some fun."

"Yeah," added his companion, a shorter boy with a cap pulled low over his eyes. "It's just a stupid Feebas. Everyone knows they're worthless."

Andrew felt a surge of anger, but kept his voice steady. "No Pokémon is worthless. And what you're doing isn't 'fun'—it's cruel."

Sionna stepped forward, her hackles raised and a low growl emanating from her throat. Zephyr hopped from Andrew's shoulder to perch on a nearby rock, her wings spread in an intimidating posture despite her small size.

The taller boy scoffed, though Andrew noticed him take a wary step back from Sionna's display. "Whatever. If you care so much about that ugly fish, then battle us for it."

"Yeah," the shorter boy added, reaching for his Poké Ball. "Two-on-two. If you win, we'll leave. If we win, you mind your own business."

Andrew's eyes narrowed. "Fine. But I'll battle both of you at once—my two against your two."

The boys exchanged surprised glances before smirking with unearned confidence. "Your funeral," the taller one said, expanding his Poké Ball. "Go, Poochyena!"

"Go, Seedot!" called the other.

In twin flashes of light, their Pokémon appeared—a gray canine with a fierce expression and a small, acorn-like creature with stubby legs. Both looked reasonably well-cared for physically, which made their trainers' behavior toward the Feebas all the more disappointing to Andrew.

"Sionna, Zephyr, ready?" Andrew asked, receiving determined nods from both his partners. "Let's show them what a true bond between trainer and Pokémon can accomplish."

The taller boy snorted. "Poochyena, use Bite on that Vulpix!"

"Seedot, Tackle the Pidgey!" ordered the other.

Andrew smiled slightly. They were attacking exactly as he'd anticipated—direct and predictable.

"Sionna, Will-O-Wisp on Poochyena. Zephyr, Quick Attack to dodge and then strike Seedot from behind!"

Sionna's eyes glowed with an eerie blue light as ghostly flames materialized around her. With precise control, she sent them dancing toward the charging Poochyena. The dark-type yelped in pain as the spectral fire made contact, leaving a painful burn that would sap its strength and reduce its physical attack power.

Simultaneously, Zephyr became a blur of motion, easily evading Seedot's clumsy Tackle attempt before circling around and striking it from behind with enough force to send the grass-type tumbling.

"What? No fair!" cried the shorter boy. "Seedot, use Nature Power!"

"Poochyena, Howl and then Bite again!" commanded the other.

"Sionna, Confuse Ray on Seedot. Zephyr, try Steel Wing on Poochyena!" Andrew countered.

Before Seedot could channel the environmental energy for Nature Power, Sionna's eyes flashed again, sending disorienting orbs of light spiraling around the grass-type. Seedot wobbled, suddenly unable to focus, and the Nature Power fizzled out harmlessly.

Poochyena completed its Howl, boosting its attack power, but the burn from Will-O-Wisp was clearly causing it pain. As it lunged toward Sionna, Zephyr intercepted with wings that gleamed with metallic energy—not a perfect Steel Wing yet, but effective enough to knock the dark-type off course.

"Follow up with Ember, Sionna!" Andrew called.

The Vulpix inhaled deeply and released a shower of small flames that peppered both opposing Pokémon. Seedot, still confused, failed to dodge and took the brunt of the attack, while the already-burned Poochyena yelped as the fire exacerbated its pain.

"This isn't fair! You're cheating somehow!" the taller boy protested.

Andrew shook his head. "This is what happens when you train with your Pokémon instead of bullying others. Zephyr, Quick Attack on Seedot! Sionna, prepare Fire Spin!"

Zephyr struck the confused Seedot with pinpoint accuracy, sending it rolling back to its trainer's feet, where it struggled to stand. Meanwhile, Sionna created a vortex of flames that surrounded Poochyena, trapping it in a fiery prison that steadily sapped its remaining strength.

"No! Poochyena, get out of there!" the taller boy cried, but the combination of the burn and the Fire Spin was too much. The dark-type collapsed, unable to continue fighting.

"Seedot, come on! Use Bide!" the shorter boy ordered desperately.

The grass-type managed to shake off its confusion and began glowing with stored energy, preparing to release a counterattack after absorbing damage.

"Zephyr, stay back," Andrew commanded. "Sionna, hit it with Extrasensory!"

Sionna's eyes glowed with psychic energy as she focused on Seedot. A rippling wave of psychic force—not as powerful as a fully mastered Extrasensory, but impressive for her first day of training with the move—struck the grass-type. The super-effective hit, combined with the damage it had already sustained, was enough to break its concentration. Seedot toppled over, the stored energy of Bide dispersing harmlessly.

The battle had lasted less than two minutes.

Both boys stared in disbelief at their defeated Pokémon. "But... but our Pokémon are strong!" the taller one protested.

"How did you beat us so easily?" demanded the other.

Andrew walked forward, Sionna and Zephyr at his side. "It's not about raw strength. It's about strategy, training, and most importantly, the bond with your Pokémon." His voice softened slightly. "Your Poochyena and Seedot have potential, but you need to respect all Pokémon—not just your own—if you want to become true trainers."

The boys recalled their defeated partners, looking somewhat chastened.

"Now go," Andrew said firmly. "And think about how you treat others—both people and Pokémon."

They hesitated for a moment before turning and hurrying away down the path, occasionally glancing back over their shoulders as if afraid Andrew might change his mind and come after them.

Once they were gone, Andrew knelt by the water's edge where the Feebas had retreated to deeper water during the battle.

"It's okay now," he said gently. "They're gone. You're safe."

For a long moment, nothing happened. Then, slowly, the Feebas surfaced, regarding Andrew with wary eyes that held both hope and doubt.

"I know what they said about you," Andrew continued, his voice soft and sincere. "But they're wrong. Completely wrong."

He reached into his bag and took out some of the premium Pokémon food he had purchased in Oldale Town. Breaking off a few small pieces, he placed them on the water's surface near the Feebas.

"Those boys couldn't see past appearance. They don't understand that true beauty and worth come from within."

The Feebas cautiously approached and nibbled at the offered food. As it ate, Andrew continued to speak, sharing his knowledge from his previous life.

"You know, where I come from, Feebas are actually considered very special Pokémon. They're rare and difficult to find, and they have the potential to evolve into one of the most beautiful and powerful Pokémon in existence—Milotic."

The Feebas paused in its eating, looking up at Andrew with newfound interest.

"It's true," he said with a smile. "With proper care and a strong bond with a trainer who appreciates you for who you are, you could become a Milotic—graceful, majestic, and with the ability to calm angry hearts with just your presence."

Sionna approached the water's edge, making a soft, encouraging sound toward the Feebas. Zephyr fluttered down to a rock at the pond's edge, adding her own gentle chirp.

"They agree with me," Andrew said. "They can see your potential too."

The Feebas swam a small circle, then approached closer to the bank where Andrew knelt. There was a new light in its eyes—a spark of hope and perhaps the beginning of belief in itself.

"Would you like to come with us?" Andrew asked. "I promise to see you for who you truly are and who you can become. We're building a team based on bonds and bringing out each Pokémon's unique potential, not on what others think is strong or valuable."

The Feebas hesitated only briefly before swimming right up to the edge, nudging against Andrew's hand with a gentle touch.

"I'll take that as a yes," Andrew said with a warm smile. He reached for an empty Poké Ball. "I think you need a name that reflects your true nature and future." He thought for a moment. "How about Belladonna? It means 'beautiful lady' in an old language from my world. We can call you Bell for short."

The newly named Belladonna made a sound that might have been approval, and when Andrew gently touched the Poké Ball to her, she made no resistance. The ball closed with a soft click, not even shaking once—a sign of complete acceptance.

"Welcome to the team, Belladonna," Andrew said, feeling a familiar warmth in his chest as their new bond formed. He immediately released her again, wanting to properly introduce her to the others.

Belladonna appeared in the shallow water, looking up at Andrew with what seemed like a smile despite her downturned mouth.

"This is Sionna," Andrew said, gesturing to the Vulpix who stepped forward to greet the water-type with a gentle touch of her nose. "And this is Zephyr." The Pidgey hopped closer, chirping a friendly welcome.

"Together, we're going to prove that every Pokémon has value and potential. And someday, when you evolve into Milotic, those boys who mocked you will be amazed at what they failed to see."

Belladonna swished her tail in response, already seeming more confident in the presence of a trainer and teammates who saw her true worth.

Andrew sat by the pond for a while longer, getting to know his new team member and allowing Sionna and Zephyr to do the same. He described his vision for their journey together, emphasizing that while they would train hard and become strong, their strength would come from mutual respect and understanding rather than focusing solely on power.

As the afternoon began to wane, Andrew finally stood, stretching his legs after the long sit. "We should continue toward Petalburg City," he said. "It's still a good day's journey from here."

He considered how to travel with Belladonna. Unlike his other Pokémon, she couldn't simply walk alongside him or perch on his shoulder.

"I have an idea," he said, digging through his backpack until he found a collapsible water container his parents had packed for him. It was meant for carrying drinking water, but it was large enough to serve as a temporary habitat for Belladonna.

Filling it with clear water from the pond, he created a portable home that he could carry comfortably in his arms. "This is just temporary," he assured her as she swam into it. "When we reach towns, you can rest in proper water habitats at the Pokémon Centers. And when we camp, I'll always find a stream or pond for you to swim in."

With Sionna trotting beside him, Zephyr alternating between flying ahead and perching on his shoulder, and Belladonna secure in her water container, Andrew resumed his journey. His team had grown to three now, each with their own story and untapped potential.

As they traveled, he found himself thinking about the strange, shadowy presence they had sensed earlier in their journey. Would it return? And if so, what would it want with them? These questions lingered in the back of his mind, but for now, he focused on the path ahead and the companions who traveled it with him.

The afternoon sun filtered through the trees, casting long shadows across their path as they made their way toward Petalburg City. Andrew's heart felt full. In less than a week since beginning his journey, he had formed bonds with three unique Pokémon, each overlooked or underestimated in different ways. Together, they would show the world what was possible when a trainer saw beyond conventional wisdom to the true heart of each Pokémon.

"Just wait," he promised his team as they walked. "This is only the beginning."

In the distance, storm clouds gathered on the horizon, but Andrew paid them little mind. Whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together—trainer and Pokémon, united by bonds that transcended appearances and expectations.

What Andrew couldn't see was the shadowy figure watching from afar, its formless shape rippling with displeasure at the sight of his growing team. Another connection had been formed, another bond that strengthened the boy's presence in this world. The shadow receded deeper into the forest, formulating new plans to separate these souls whose union threatened a carefully constructed equilibrium between worlds.

But for now, as afternoon gave way to evening, Andrew and his team continued their journey in peace, unaware of the forces aligning against them—or the greater destiny that awaited them beyond the familiar paths of the Pokémon world.
