CHAPTER 8: BUILDING BONDS
Added 2025-04-06 10:00:04 +0000 UTCWhile developing his combat skills, Andrew also strengthens his bond with Naruto. Their relationship has evolved beyond friendship into true brotherhood, with Andrew now permanently living in Naruto's apartment rather than the orphanage. Most evenings find them training together, with Andrew subtly guiding their practice sessions to help Naruto develop skills he'll need in the future.
"Try focusing your chakra like this," Andrew demonstrates one evening, walking up a tree trunk with ease. "Imagine it's like glue on your feet—too little and you slip, too much and you'll blast off."
Naruto's first attempts send him crashing to the ground, but his determination never wavers. "I'm gonna master this, believe it!" he declares, picking himself up for the twentieth time.
"I know you will," Andrew encourages. "Your chakra reserves are massive—you just need to learn control."
After weeks of practice and countless failures, Naruto finally manages to stand on the surface of the small pond they've been using for training. His eyes widen in disbelief as he realizes he isn't sinking.
"I'm doing it!" he shouts, his arms stretched out for balance. "Andrew, look! I'm actually walking on water!"
The pure joy on Naruto's face makes all the frustrating weeks of practice worth it. He starts jumping up and down on the water's surface, causing small splashes with each landing but maintaining his footing.
"This is amazing!" Naruto exclaims, running in circles on the pond. "Wait till Sasuke sees this! He's gonna be so jealous!"
Andrew can't help but smile at his friend's excitement. This simple victory means more to Naruto than most could understand—it's proof that he can master difficult techniques despite what the village thinks of him.
"Great job, Naruto," Andrew says, genuinely proud. "I told you that you could do it."
As they head back toward the village, Andrew turns to Naruto with a more serious expression. "Your taijutsu has improved—it's way better than that drunken bar fighter style you had before—but it's still lacking structure." He places a hand on Naruto's shoulder. "You should keep focusing on what you're naturally good at: your traps and the fuinjutsu we've been studying."
Over the past few months, Andrew had introduced Naruto to the basics of sealing techniques, knowing the Uzumaki clan's natural affinity for fuinjutsu ran in his blood. At first, Naruto had been skeptical—written seals seemed too complex compared to the flashy jutsu he admired. But once he realized that storage seals could be modified to create explosive tags and that sealing techniques formed the foundation of many of his beloved pranking tools, his interest had grown exponentially.
"But I want to be good at everything!" Naruto protests, though without real conviction. He's come to enjoy their evening sessions spent hunched over scrolls of complex sealing formulas, especially after Andrew pointed out that the Fourth Hokage had been a sealing master.
"Everyone has different strengths," Andrew explains patiently. "And fuinjutsu plays to yours - you're creative, you think outside the box, and you have incredible stamina for practicing the precise brush strokes required."
Naruto grins, already imagining the possibilities. "And then I can create a seal that dumps paint on everyone in the Hokage Tower at once!"
Andrew laughs. "That's... not exactly what I had in mind, but sure, we can work toward that goal."
With both tree walking and water walking now in Naruto's arsenal, plus his growing knowledge of fuinjutsu, Andrew knows this head start will serve him well in the challenges to come.
As Andrew continues to refine his skills, he discovers that while his silvery chakra is different from normal chakra, he can still use standard elemental techniques. His nighttime raids of the restricted sections of Konoha's library have proven fruitful, yielding scrolls containing various ninjutsu and genjutsu techniques that he practices in secret.
From these forbidden scrolls, Andrew masters several versatile jutsu. He becomes particularly adept with fire techniques like Goukakyuu no Jutsu (Great Fireball Technique), which creates a massive sphere of flames that he can control with precision, and water techniques such as Teppoudama (Bullet Technique), which allows him to fire concentrated balls of water at high velocity.
His genjutsu arsenal grows to include Kori Shinchu no Jutsu (Mind-Body Disturbance Technique), which confuses an opponent's sense of direction; Magen - Kokoniarazu no Jutsu (Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique), allowing him to change the appearance of an area; and Magen - Narakumi no Jutsu (Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing Technique), which traps victims in an illusion of their worst fear.
When Andrew performs these conventional techniques, they take on a distinctive silver tinge due to his unique chakra, making them visually striking and slightly more potent than standard versions. This versatility gives him options beyond his signature silver chakra techniques, though those remain his most powerful and natural abilities.
During this time, Andrew also works on building strategic relationships with others who will play important roles in the future. He orchestrates "accidental" meetings between Naruto and Hinata, pretending not to notice the Hyuga heiress hiding behind poles and trees whenever Naruto is around. Instead of approaching her directly, which might only increase her shyness, Andrew convinces Naruto to help him "train a friend who needs confidence."
"She reminds me of you in a way," Andrew tells Naruto one day as they walk home from training. "Everyone expects great things from her because of her family, but nobody really sees who she really is."
Naruto, who understands all too well what it means to be misunderstood, eagerly agrees to help. "So who is this friend? Do I know her?"
"You've seen her around," Andrew says vaguely. "She's in our class. Dark hair, kind of quiet."
The next day, Andrew approaches Hinata after school. The shy Hyuga heiress nearly faints when he mentions training with Naruto, but her desire to be near her crush eventually overcomes her nervousness.
Their first training session is almost comedic—Hinata can barely speak when Naruto addresses her directly, and she passes out completely when he adjusts her stance during taijutsu practice. But gradually, over weeks of regular meetings, she begins to find her voice.
"Y-you're getting really good at this, N-Naruto-kun," she manages to say one day after watching him master a particularly difficult chakra exercise.
Naruto beams at her. "Thanks, Hinata! You're pretty amazing too, you know! The way you can see chakra points with your Byakugan is super cool!"
Her face turns crimson, but she doesn't faint—progress that makes Andrew smile.
One evening, Andrew suggests they all go to Ichiraku Ramen after training. Hinata hesitates, but agrees when both boys insist. At the ramen stand, Ayame immediately notices the new addition to their usual duo.
"And who is this?" she asks with a warm smile, leaning over the counter to get a better look at the blushing Hyuga.
"This is our friend Hinata!" Naruto announces proudly. "She's training with us, and she's really good!"
"I-It's nice to meet you," Hinata stammers, bowing slightly.
Ayame's eyes twinkle with understanding as she glances between Hinata and Naruto. "Any friend of these two troublemakers is welcome here. First bowl is on the house for you, Hinata!"
Throughout the meal, Ayame finds excuses to comment on what a cute couple Naruto and Hinata would make, sending the poor girl into a spiral of blushes and causing Naruto to tilt his head in confusion. Andrew watches with amusement, knowing that the seeds being planted now might bloom years later.
These efforts with Hinata prove more successful than Andrew's attempts to engage with Sasuke Uchiha. The last Uchiha, traumatized by the massacre of his clan three years earlier when Andrew was seven, rebuffs all attempts at friendship. The one time Andrew manages to spark his interest with a challenging taijutsu technique, Sasuke's infamous fan club surrounds them immediately, glaring daggers at Andrew for daring to approach their idol.
"Just leave me alone," Sasuke mutters after one such interruption. "I don't have time for friendships. I have goals."
Andrew debates telling him that revenge isn't the path to healing but decides against it. Some journeys must be walked before lessons can be learned.
He has more success with Shikamaru Nara, the lazy genius whose intelligence might be crucial in the years ahead. Their shogi matches become a weekly occurrence, with Shikamaru growing increasingly puzzled by Andrew's ability to anticipate his strategies.
"You're troublesome," Shikamaru comments after Andrew counters a trap five moves before it's sprung. "It's like you know what I'm thinking."
Andrew just smiles enigmatically. "Maybe I'm just lucky."
"Nobody's that lucky," Shikamaru mutters, studying the board with newfound interest. "There's something different about you lately. Ever since your birthday last year."
Andrew redirects the conversation, but makes a mental note to be more careful around the observant Nara.
