I honestly really like this outcome, Ash only just started his Pokemon journey around a year ago in series (even though the series says he's still 10), having him lose his first tournament is a good decision, he still has a lot of room to grow. He went into the Pokemon League with a lot of unevolved Pokemon and a Charizard that doesn't obey him, he got pretty far despite all of that, making it into the top 16 and is actually starting to strategies a little, it's a good choice to push him a little and get him on a new journey, it's not quite the same, but I do compare it a little to how Goku lost his first tournament to Roshi, but Pokemon makes it more clear that Ash has a longer way to go. He only made it past the preliminaries and lost his first proper match, having him lose it to a friend softens the blow a little, and having Gary his rival not even make it past the prelims is a good way of showing just how much stronger Ash will need to get to become a Pokemon Master, this was honestly handled pretty well, I'd rather have Ash face challenges then steamroll every opponent.
