The game was in terrible condition when it first launched, plus they made some changes that the playerbase was not happy about. They did eventually addressed these problems and the game is in a much better state now, but first impressions are everything and a lot of players just never came back after the disappointing launch. The devs have said they are putting a lot of work into the launch of the next BF game so it doesn't have launch issues, but to be honest, almost every BF game has had trouble at launch so we'll just have to see. The next game might be coming out this year.
