Rob downfall was that he had to much generosity and forgiveness. That's not good qualities for a king. It's good to be generous and forgiving but at the same time you need to feared and respected by your enemies, allies and subordinates. You could see throughout the entire season that everybody was losing respect for Rob. They recognized his skill in battle but saw to many weaknesses in his character.

So back when this first aired, a lot of reaction videos to the red wedding went viral. A lot book readers who knew it was coming set of cameras to get people's reactions. Watching reactions to this episode was actually my first introduction to reaction content, so you could say in a roundabout way, it's indirectly responsible for me finding you ;)

A fun fact about the guest right is that every God; The Old, The New, and even the less than benevolent The Drowned God hold that right as sacred and inviolable.
Even bandits, ruffians, thieves, murderers and such do not violate that right lest they incur the wrath of The Gods.

This episode catches everyone by suprise on first viewing, if you go back to rewatch the series, there's a lot of clues you would miss on first view. There have been a bunch of folk after watching this episode that decided they are done with watching the show, this one is a real gut punch but also our favourite thing to watch any reactor react to. The emotions of reactors vary so much, some people scream at the T.V. Others are stunned into silence, some cry their eye's out, others are emotionless but I think we all have that same question afterwards, "Who am I going to root for now?"

Robb and Catelyn's mistakes:
- Placing Karstark's son as the guard over Jaime and locking Jaime's cousin up with him.
- Robb trusting that Theon could convince The Greyjoys to fight alongside his cause, which cost him Winterfell & Moat Cailen and as far as Catelyn and Robb know, Bran and Rickon are dead
- Catelyn letting Jaime go
- Robb going against his vows to Walder Frey
- Robb halting his campaign to attend his grandfather's funeral
- Edmure Tully choosing to occupy a Mill rather than surround and capture/kill The Mountain
- Robb executing Lord Karstark despite everyone advising Robb keep him as a hostage
It was also clear that Roose Bolton had betrayed Robb when he allowed Jaime to continue onwards to King's Landing. I believe Roose betrayed Robb late Season 2/Early Season 3. I also think Roose had some sympathy for Karstark losing his sons and like him, knew Robb marrying Talisa was a mistake.
Also, when Cersei was trying to win Tywin's confidence, Tywin was drafting letters; those letters were being sent to Roose and Walder.
The Hound saved Arya's life, because he has grown to care about her and she would have died a pointless death if she rushed into the Hall.
Catelyn died believing Rickon and Bran were dead, witnessed her first born die, had no idea where Arya is, and knew Sansa was now beyond any help from her. She died well before that knife slit her throat.
Also, you are no longer a Sweet Summer Child; you are now a man of Winter.
Edit: This episode is also credited as the birth of reaction channels since a lot of book readers recorded their friends/families reactions to what they knew was coming.

And finally you see the Red Wedding, probably the most famous scene in this series, fun fact, this is actually based on a historical event in Scotland called the Black Dinner where a very young king invited a clan to a feast where they were killed by conspirators (I believe without the young king even being aware of the plan, it was one of his powerful nobles that was pulling the king's strings). There are youtube videos of people who had read the books and knew what was coming, filming the reactions of their friends/families while watching this that are pretty funny.
This is sort of the final event of the mistakes House Stark has made throughout this whole conflict. Rob tried to rule honorably, just as his father did, but as a result, he alienated his allies, and was not prepared to deal with facing an enemy who did not care about honor. One reason the Starks felt safe is because they had shared bread and salt with their host (Walder Frey) when they arrived in the first part of the episode (the food they were eating in yesterday's video). It meant that according to the law of Guest Right, they would be safe under his roof after doing so, obviously Walder doesn't give a crap about that.
Finally, the song the minstrels started playing right before the attack started was "The Rains of Castamere". It was the first indication to Cat that something was wrong, because the whole point of the song is "Don't fuck with the Lannisters" as it's based on the story the Cersei told Margaery at Tyrion's wedding about how Tywin Lannister wiped out another noble house that tried to rebel against House Lannister. Playing the song here was basically Tywin's way of saying "This was my plan, and I got you."

Noone is safe in this show. You could see Rob's campain falling apart throughout the season and this was the final nail. Also funfact: the song that started playing before the massacre was the rains of castlemere, the lannister music which is why they could sense something bad was about to happen.
