It's funny seeing how the episodes handled AJ compared to later trainers who are established to either not give a shit about their Pokemon, or adopt a similar method as AJ, but it's clear the bond isn't there. In fact, there's a prominent trainer in one of the later seasons who's basically AJ taken up to 11, ultra efficient, desires results and is a cold, calculating SOB. AJ would be tough on his Pokemon, but would take offense to them being insulted. The guy who shows up later would outright disown and insult his Pokemon if they underperfomed.

So the move that sandshrew used at the end to cause the giant crack in the ground was "Fissure", in the games it has a 30% chance to hit, but if it does hit it's a OHKO move, meaning if it lands on the opposite pokemon it's guaranteed to beat it. Another thing about the OHKO moves, tho it doesn't apply all that much in the anime, cause levels mean very little in the anime, is that if the pokemon using an OHKO move is a lower level the the opponent, it'll never get hit by it, meaning if a lvl 29 sandshrew used it 100 times in a row on a lvl 30 Pikachu, it would never hit the pikachu.

Ash's training methods vs Aj's, reminded me of Rocky's natural training vs Drago's AI-based, training regime from Rocky IV.
