This song is many things. An artist's life, ambitions, loss of self, a fear of comparison, a fear of rejection, a hunger for love... Moonlight is told from the unified perspectives of art and artist, telling a sort-of love story between the creator and the created- the art struggles with feelings of inadequacy and neglect/abandonment, reflecting the artist's feelings as well (as they are one in the same).
As the song continues, though, the artist reconnects with their inner self and is able to come to terms with their creation. Nothing is truly original, but at least a piece of ourselves can be left behind by what we make.
