Sasaki was never a good guy; even at the end, he was still opposed to the Shinsengumi, but just through sheer relatable humanity, you come to empathize with him and his struggles to feel that extra bit of sadness when he's gone. And they round off his whole character by taking the email joke that's been present since he was first introduced, and making it come from a genuinely sad and relatable place.
