Yeah unfortunately kids tend to get the rough end of things in Gundam and as far as I know the backstories here are pretty much the norm for kids in this series at least on Mars but most Gundam shows are definitely more than just giant robots beating the crap outta each other since most of the tv series tend to be at the 50 episodes mark they have plenty of time to do whatever they want storytelling wise
