Yup, Getter started as a violent manga with an unscrupulous cast. Was fun and badass, but it's Shin, Go and Arc were the story becomes more philosophical and the nature of Getter Rays is explored. As said, Armageddon mixes Go and Shin together. But even Go, Shin and Arc are more comedic than Armageddon. Armageddons other name is Change!! Shin Getter Robo: The Last Day of the World.

Pretty standard stuff among combining robots. But Getter has a feature that only a small handful of later mecha have. Thing about Getter pilots, they need to be physically strong to use Getters as the G-Forces strain the body. Kinda flies against the common idea that mecha pilots are always weaklings.
