Yeah, Balalaika has a very interesting backstory. It's implied that her father defected to the West and she was more or less raised on her grandfather's promises that she'd represent the Soviet Union in the Olympics. Instead she ended up in Afghanistan, which was more or less Russia's Vietnam. The war that ended in failure, the veterans of which nobody gave as shit about. A great many of them returned home to poverty, much like the rest of the Union after the Berlin Wall came down. Crime and the Mafiya became rampant, really there was only logical choice for her and her men. The Mafiya needed guns and Balalaika and her men were it.
