In real life Elizabeth Bathory was accused of bathing in the blood of young virgin girls, in order to preserve her own youth. Of course some have argued that she was falsely accused. Apparently King Matthias of Hungary owed her a significant amount of money, which he no longer owed her once she was arrested. Making him a bad choice for an impartial judge. Though you gotta admit it does make for a good story.
