Subaru's never actually had someone come out and call him a friend before, its always been him trying to be friends with everyone else, so when Otto came up front with him about it, it took time for him to register it. This hit home for me cause I've been in his shoes, its usually me trying to approach everyone else and be friends with them, not the other way around.

Ram cant smell the scent of the witch, not all oni can do that, Rem is unique (there was another oni in an IF but she also had special circumstances)

Now it's becoming clearer why Garfiel is becoming more hostile to Subaru. Every time Subaru RESET's the witches scent increases and much like Rem and Ram Garfeil can smell it or maybe just sense it. Every time Subaru comes back from failing this "Miasma" increases and Garfiel becomes more suspicious of Subaru because he hasn't met anyone with this much Miasma before. He can only assume that Subaru is a secret Witch Cultist and that he can't let someone like that near the Witch's graveyard. That's why since Subaru first reset he has been opposed to him taking the trial over Emilia.

Up to this point I saw Otto as someone who was sucking up to Subaru in order to get a good paying job from Roswaal. I was as blind as Subaru about him being an actual friend.

I was thinking while Subaru laid in the dungeon tied up "can't he just try to bash his head in to die?" and then he tried to actually do that! Apparently Subaru wasn't laughing at Otto's dysfunctionality, but to his own. 🤣

I do love this "twist" with Otto. I feel like both Subaru and the viewer peg him as a snake because of the time he pushed Subaru off that carriage. However, that was really just a normal guy pushed into a corner with a guy he's known for a few hours, after everyone he knew being killed or wiped from his memory, AND being negatively affected by the White Whale. But in this time line, none of that even happened. Instead Otto is just a nice guy who has found a new friend that has helped him a lot. I know I'm kind of just rehashing the episode here, I just really love that everybody instinctively held him at arm's length based on a first impression that never happened. It makes him saving Subaru a twist when it would have otherwise been obvious.

I somehow get the feeling roswaald is an archbishop. maybe because all of them talk funny, but that would be a major twist. Of course don't tell me if i am right, never seen re zero before

the anime doesnt mention it so i dont blame you for not know but the white whales fog made Otto crazy which is why his character shifted so much and he threw subaru off, Subaru knows this now after seeing the soldiers go crazy so he doesnt hold anything against otto

Let's be honest tho if I was subaru I would have also been a bit weary of Otto saying that, although yes he helped him alot you gotta admit the 1st time he met Otto when it was going bad Otto pushed subaru off the cart to get eaten by the whale, which I honestly don't blame him for, if I was Otto I would probably have also done that, but that should have had a lasting impression of Otto on subaru. It at the very least should leave him with a lingering sense of what of Otto would do that again when the goin gets though. But yea this scene here made me like him lol
