one thing to note about ryus situation: japan is very unfriendly to people who don't conform to what is considered the norm, where having unusual body proportions, fashion sense or being a foreigner is enough for someone to become a complete outcast, stuff like getting a job or renting a home is extremely difficult when you're in that situation. people like that usually end up being recruited by the yakuza, so the fact that ryu and his boys don't want to see the world burn shows that they're actually good people.
