Added 2020-02-11 13:18:05 +0000 UTCJoe got a call from Nico's ex-boyfriend last year and told us that he saw some weird article about a criminal on a foreign website, and the criminal looked like Nico. He also asked us how was Nico doing with his depression, etc etc.
Before that call, we had invited Nico numerous time but he always refused our invitation. Sometimes he didn't even picked up our calls. So naturally after a few unanswered phone calls, we just gave up calling him, thinking he might need some alone time for himself and we waited for him to contact us again.
The news came as a shock, we eventually looked up that website and found the article. And yes, it was him in that photo, looked messed up, wearing a orange uniform in that mug shot for criminals.
According to that article, Nico came to that country, and tried to cross the border with illegal weapons, drug, fake ID and even some fake police badges. He was facing some serious charges and jail time.
We don't know how long he has been in that country. We don't know when he left France. We don't know where he got the weapons. We know nothing. I know he was under medical treatment for his depression and he was a veterinarian, so that might explain where he got some drugs, but the fake ID and stuff, we have no idea.
It's funny in a not-so-funny situation that, I always thought we were close to Nico and we were his close friends. It turns out, we might not be so close after all since he didn't tell us a thing about his plan. Nico never seemed to be a violent person to me, and I certainly had no idea he knew how to shoot with guns.
We contacted some of his friends, and nobody knows anything. We even contacted his family from abroad but no one answered us anything.
Of course, we have our speculations. Joe thought it might be a Grindr date turns bad and he became a mule for some drug lord... very Hollywood... yet very unlikely to me. I don't know what went through his mind when he decided to leave everything behind, just to started somewhere new without anybody knowing him. I think it's sad... but kind of understandable for a depressed guy like him.
One thing is for sure, we won't know what happened until one day we get to meet him again.

A sad situation, unfortunately it demonstrates how easily and quickly your life can take a wrong turn. Sincerely hope he can find his way back.

I have a very old friend who is a bit like this: If there's a right decision to be made and a wrong decision, she will always, inevitably choose the wrong decision. I don't know why, but she always does. I feel terrible for Nico, and for you, Joe and his other friends since not knowing what happened will eat at you. Hugs to everyone, it will work out somehow. Jail doesn't mean Nico's life is over, he has to start over. What happened in the past doesn't matter, what matters is how he goes on from this point. Much love from Canada to all.

2020-02-11 14:34:35 +0000 UTCshocking sad news....I don't know even what to say but maybe he considered you two so much he didn't want to bother you anymore with his stuff and didn't tell anything to protect you and probably to not hear a DON'T from you even though is the most normal thing to say when you know something isn't right. I can't tell what he feels, but just maybe it was that. You know when someone keep it in the dark to protect you...well, you intend to visit him? I hope you all get together again...Best wishes
